Smartphone-based detection of subtle memory decline in prodromal Alzheimer's disease.

The slow progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD) poses a challenge for the quantification of early disease-driven cognitive decline. Here, we show that frequently administered remote and unsupervised digital cognitive assessments can detect differences in cognitive decline within 30 weeks in early AD. The sample comprised 202 individuals (52-85 years old) recruited from longitudinal observational studies, who were cognitively unimpaired (CU, n = 152) or had a diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment (MCI, n = 50). Participants self-administered remote tasks testing memory precision for objects a

Self-efficacy predicts differential neuroticism change in a smartphone-based intervention.

Self-guided, digital interventions can help people change their personality traits in desired directions, including becoming less neurotic. However, little is known about how and why people differ in intervention-related changes. Theoretical models state that intentional personality change must be perceived as feasible and that being motivated to change is not sufficient to elicit lasting trait changes. Using a German-speaking sample (N = 446; Mage = 25.88; 85% female; Residence: 47% Switzerland, 26% Germany, 26% Austria, 1% other), we tested whether self-efficacy and growth mindset predict ch

Gram staining decipherment using an artificial intelligence-powered smartphone-based application.

Gram staining provides rapid microbiological information that may assist in empirical antimicrobial selection; however, the results are often interpreted by microbiological specialists who are not always available. Therefore, we developed a computer-aided diagnosis system using artificial intelligence trained on microscopic images of Gram-stained urine, captured with an iPhone, using the Bartholomew and Mittwer method. The system interprets Gram-stained urine samples and classifies bacterial morphology (Class 1: 7 predefined morphology categories) and 17 predefined species-level categories (Cl

Electrocardiographic recordings of foals using a new smartphone-based digital device.

BACKGROUND: Smartphone-based electrocardiography (ECG) is increasingly explored as a practical tool for cardiac assessment in veterinary species. AIMS: The aim of this prospective observational study was to investigate the usability and reliability of a new smartphone-based ECG system (Eko DUO) in healthy foals. METHODS: A total of 39 foals, aged 1 to 59 days, were enrolled. ECGs were recorded using the smartphone device in all animals, while a subgroup of 10 foals also underwent simultaneous recording with a conventional base-apex ECG (rECG) to enable direct comparison. All tracings were re

Magnetic smartphone microflow cytometry enables rapid CD4/CD8 T cell quantification.

Accurate enumeration of CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes is essential for HIV management, yet conventional flow cytometry remains largely inaccessible in resource-limited settings. Current point-of-care testing (POCT) approaches, including lateral flow assays and fluorescence-based imaging methods, offer improved accessibility but typically compromise accuracy and yield semi-quantitative results. Here, we present a magnetic-activated smartphone microflow cytometry (MACC) platform that enables rapid, highly accessible, and fully quantitative T lymphocyte counting at the POCT. MACC integrates microfl

Artificial intelligence assisted identification of newborn auricular deformities via smartphone application.

BACKGROUND: Auricular deformities are common in newborns and require early diagnosis and timely intervention. Several factors highlight the necessity of a machine learning-based diagnostic solution: the high prevalence of these conditions, the narrow time window for effective non-surgical treatment, limited medical resources, and the importance of both physical and mental well-being. This study presents a novel artificial intelligence (AI) model to identify and classify common sub-types of auricle deformities, using photos taken with mobile devices. METHODS: The dataset was made up of the ope

Assessing static balance control improvement following cataract surgery using a smartphone.

INTRODUCTION: Cataract remains a prevalent cause of visual impairment among the elderly, significantly increasing the risk of falls due to compromised visual function. Cataract removal surgery has been established as a means to enhance visual acuity and balance control. The advent of novel technologies, such as accelerometers integrated into smartphones, provides an opportunity to assess static balance control. We compared static balance measurements obtained from accelerometer built-in smartphones before and after cataract removal surgery. METHODS: Our sample comprised 29 individuals diagnos

Childhood maltreatment and problematic smartphone use: A multilevel, meta-analytic review.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Problematic smartphone use (PSU), characterized by excessive and compulsive engagement with smartphones, is significantly shaped by the family environment. Recent studies have shown that childhood maltreatment (CM) is associated with increased PSU. Despite this growing recognition, comprehensive, quantitative evaluations of this connection remain scarce. The present meta-analysis aims to synthesize existing quantitative evidence on the relationship between PSU and CM. METHODS: We systematically searched databases including Web of Science, ProQuest, PubMed, Elsevier Scienc

Satellite-Derived, Smartphone-Delivered Geospatial Cholera Risk Information for Vulnerable Populations.

Cholera, an acute waterborne diarrheal disease, remains a major global health challenge. Despite being curable and preventable, it can be fatal if left untreated, especially for children. Bangladesh, a cholera-endemic country with a high disease burden, experiences two peaks annually, during the dry pre-monsoon spring and the wet post-monsoon fall seasons. An early warning system for disseminating cholera risk, which has potential to reduce the disease burden, currently does not exist in Bangladesh. Such systems can raise timely awareness and allow households in rural, riverine areas like Matl

A Smartphone application to provide real-time cardiopulmonary resuscitation quality feedback.

BACKGROUND: Quality of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) contributes significantly to outcomes. Key determinants of CPR quality pertaining to chest compressions are compression rate, compression depth, duration of interruptions, and chest recoil. Several studies have demonstrated that real-time audiovisual feedback improves CPR quality. We hypothesize that a mobile application using sensor data from built-in accelerometers in smartphones can provide accurate chest compression quality feedback in real time. This study aims to develop and validate an application for smartphone which can provid

Privacy-Preserving Deep Speaker Separation for Smartphone-Based Passive Speech Assessment.

Goal: Smartphones can be used to passively assess and monitor patients' speech impairments caused by ailments such as Parkinson's disease, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and dementia. However, passive audio recordings in natural settings often capture the speech of non-target speakers (cross-talk). Consequently, speaker separation, which identifies the target speakers' speech in audio recordings with two or more speakers' voices, is a crucial pre-processing step in such scenarios. Prior speech separ
