Psychophysical assessment of color vision with the Cambridge Color Vision Test in unilateral functional amblyopia.

PURPOSE: Amblyopia is a cortical neurological disorder caused by abnormal visual experiences during the critical period for visual development. Recent works have shown that, in addition to the well-known visual alterations, such as changes in visual acuity, several perceptual aspects of vision are affected. This study aims to analyze and compare the effects of different types of amblyopia on visual color processing and determine whether these effects are correlated with visual acuity. METHODS: Our study sample comprised 42 amblyopic individuals, aged 7-40 years, (strabismus, n=16; anisometrop

Fast Window-Based Event Denoising With Spatiotemporal Correlation Enhancement.

Previous deep learning-based event denoising methods mostly suffer from poor interpretability and difficulty in real-time processing due to their complex architecture designs. In this paper, we propose window-based event denoising, which simultaneously deals with a stack of events while existing element-based denoising focuses on one event each time. Besides, we give the theoretical analysis based on probability distributions in both temporal and spatial domains to improve interpretability. In temporal domain, we use timestamp deviations between processing events and central event to judge the

TA-SSM net: tri-directional attention and structured state-space model for enhanced MRI-Based diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment.

Early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and its precursor, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), is critical for effective prevention and treatment. Computer-aided diagnosis using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides a cost-effective and objective approach. However, existing methods often segment 3D MRI images into 2D slices, leading to spatial information loss and reduced diagnostic accuracy. To overcome this limitation, we propose TA-SSM Net, a deep learning model that leverages tri-directional attention and structured state-space model (SSM) for improved MRI-based diagnosis of AD and MC

Differences in embodied cognition between the arrow-orientation and the arrow-position recognition tasks: evidence from event-related potentials.

Embodied cognition is known to play a role in verbal semantic processing. However, its involvement in nonverbal semantic elements, such as arrows, is less understood. Two spatial recognition tasks, specifically arrow-orientation recognition and arrow-position recognition, were employed using directional arrows in various spatial arrangements as visual stimuli. Stimuli were categorized into congruent (where orientation and position align), incongruent 1 (where orientation and position are directly opposing), and incongruent 2 (where orientation and position are unrelated) groups for both tasks.

Right middle occipital gyrus is associated with egocentric spatial orientation during body tilt: Evidence from a repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation study.

Accurate perception of the orientation of external objects relative to the body, known as egocentric spatial orientation, is fundamental to performing action. Previously, we found via behavioural and magnetic resonance imaging voxel-based morphometry studies that egocentric spatial orientation is strongly distorted when the whole body is tilted with respect to gravity, and that the magnitude of this perceptual distortion is correlated with the grey matter volume of the right middle occipital gyrus (rMOG). In the present study, we further validated the association between the neural processing

Technical optimization of spatially resolved single-cell transcriptomic datasets to study clinical liver disease.

Single cell and spatially resolved 'omic' techniques have enabled deep characterization of clinical pathologies that remain poorly understood, providing unprecedented insights into molecular mechanisms of disease. However, transcriptomic platforms are costly, limiting sample size, which increases the possibility of pre-analytical variables such as tissue processing and storage procedures impacting RNA quality and downstream analyses. Furthermore, spatial transcriptomics have not yet reached single cell resolution, leading to the development of multiple deconvolution methods to predict individu

The effect of blur on cortical responses to global form and motion.

Global form and motion sensitivity undergo long development in childhood with motion sensitivity rather than form being impaired in a number of childhood disorders and both impaired in adult clinical populations. This suggests extended development and vulnerability of extrastriate cortical areas associated with global processing. However, in some developmental and clinical populations, it remains unclear to what extent impairments might reflect deficits at earlier stages of visual processing, such as reduced visual acuity and contrast sensitivity. To address this, we investigated the impact of

Improving Image Quality in 10× Visium Spatial Transcriptomics Using Vispro.

10× Visium is a widely used spatial transcriptomics platform that enables joint profiling of gene expression and the spatial locations of cells. However, the histology images generated by the 10× Visium platform often contain technical artifacts, including fiducial markers and background noise, which degrade image quality. Here, we describe how a computational method, Vispro, can be applied to process and enhance these images. The resulting high-quality images lead to improved performance across a range of downstream analyses.

Spatial characterization of electrogram morphology from transmural recordings in the intact normal heart.

PURPOSE: Unipolar (UE) and bipolar electrograms (BE) are utilized to identify arrhythmogenic substrate. We quantified the effect of increasing distance from the source of propagation on local electrogram amplitude; and determined if transmural electrophysiological gradients exist with respect to propagation and stimulation depth. METHODS: Mapping was performed on 5 sheep. Deployment of >50 quadripolar transmural needles in the LV were located in Cartesian space using Ensite. Contact electrograms from all needles were recorded during multisite bipolar pacing from epicardial then endocardial el

Sparse spatial-frequency adaptive learning for enhancing underwater acoustical tonals under impulse noise.

Enhancing and extracting sinusoidal signals (tonals) is a key challenge in underwater acoustic signal processing. However, conventional tonal enhancement methods deteriorate seriously under high levels of impulse noise. To address this problem, we propose a sparse spatial-frequency adaptive learning method for robust tonal enhancement in the presence of impulse noise. An array signal model is formulated to characterize spatially correlated impulse noise. Based on this model, we exploit the sparsity of tonals in the spatial-frequency domain and develop a sparse spatial-frequency beamforming app

Spatial quantification and classification of skin response following perturbation using organotypic skin cultures.

MOTIVATION: For a mechanistic understanding of skin and its response to an induced perturbation, systems biology is gaining increasing attention. Unfortunately, quantitative and spatial expression data for skin, like for most other tissues, are almost not available. RESULTS: Integrating organotypic skin cultures, whole-slide scanning and subsequent image processing provides bioinformatics with a novel source of spatial expression data. We here used this approach to quantitatively describe the effect of treating organotypic skin cultures with sodium dodecyl sulphate in a non-corrosive concentr

Bilateral spatial filtering: refining methods for localizing brain activation in the presence of parenchymal abnormalities.

Functional MRI (fMRI) is an important tool for pre-surgical localization of eloquent cortex prior to resection of brain lesions. To increase the inherently low activation signal to noise ratio, fMRI pre-processing steps often include spatial smoothing. However, the effects of smoothing in the presence of brain lesions have not been studied. We have adapted the widely used method of Gaussian spatial filtering to include an "edge stopping" function. This method, termed bilateral filtering, minimizes blurring of apparent brain activity across anatomic boundaries and into regions of non-activation

Non-invasive evaluation of face and motion perception in humans.

The neural mechanisms for the perception of face and motion were studied using psychophysical threshold measurements, event-related potentials (ERPs), and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). A face-specific ERP component, N170, was recorded over the posterior temporal cortex. Removal of the high-spatial-frequency components of the face altered the perception of familiar faces significantly, and familiarity can facilitate the cortico-cortical processing of facial perceptions. Similarly, the high-spatial-frequency components of the face seemed to be crucial for the recognition of facia

Spatial and temporal attention deficits following brain injury: a neuroanatomical decomposition of the temporal order judgement task.

We investigated spatial and temporal deficits following brain injury using the temporal order judgement (TOJ) task. Patients judged the order in which two letters appeared to the left and right of fixation. We measured the extent of any spatial bias and the temporal resolution of the decision. Temporal and spatial deficits on the TOJ task were significantly correlated. The spatial bias on the TOJ task was also correlated with the spatial bias on a neglect task and with unilateral deficits on an extinction task, but not with extinction itself. These spatial deficits were all associated with dam

Relationships Among Peripheral and Central Electrophysiological Measures of Spatial and Spectral Selectivity and Speech Perception in Cochlear Implant Users.

OBJECTIVES: The ability to perceive speech is related to the listener's ability to differentiate among frequencies (i.e., spectral resolution). Cochlear implant (CI) users exhibit variable speech-perception and spectral-resolution abilities, which can be attributed in part to the extent of electrode interactions at the periphery (i.e., spatial selectivity). However, electrophysiological measures of peripheral spatial selectivity have not been found to correlate with speech perception. The purpose of this study was to evaluate auditory processing at the periphery and cortex using both simple an

A Scalable 1024-Channel Ultra-Low-Power Spike Sorting Chip with Event-Driven Detection and Spatial Clustering.

This paper presents a 1024-channel ultra-low-power spike sorting chip featuring event-driven spike detection and spatial clustering for large-scale neural recording. To address power and scalability constraints in brain-computer interfaces, the design integrates a compressive ADC with a two-stage spike detector that significantly reduces memory and processing activity. Spatial features derived from high-density microelectrode array (MEA) enhance cluster separability, enabling robust performance even under neural signal distortion or probe drift, particularly when recordings are obtained using

Impaired visuospatial transformation but intact sequence processing in Parkinson disease.

OBJECTIVE: We examined whether visuospatial deficits in Parkinson disease (PD) can be explained by a domain-general, nonspatial impairment in the sequencing or serial chaining of mental operations. BACKGROUND: PD has been shown to be associated with impaired visuospatial processing, but the mechanisms of this impairment remain unclear. METHODS: Thirteen patients with PD and 20 age-matched, neurologically normal controls performed a visuospatial grid navigation task requiring sequential spatial transformations. The participants also performed a control task of serial number subtraction design

Enhanced mental rotation ability in time-space synesthesia.

Time-space synesthesia is a variant of sequence-space synesthesia and involves the involuntary association of months of the year with 2D and 3D spatial forms, such as arcs, circles, and ellipses. Previous studies have revealed conflicting results regarding the association between time-space synesthesia and enhanced spatial processing ability. Here, we tested 15 time-space synesthetes, and 15 non-synesthetic controls matched for age, education, and gender on standard tests of mental rotation ability, spatial working memory, and verbal working memory. Synesthetes performed better than controls o
