Prevalence and epidemiologic patterns of feline parasitism detected by fecal examination in the United States, 2023.

Parasitic infections remain an important health concern in cats; however, contemporary large-scale data describing their prevalence and epidemiologic patterns in the United States are limited. This study evaluated the prevalence and diversity of feline parasitism detected by fecal examination and assessed demographic, geographic, and temporal factors associated with infection. Electronic laboratory records of fecal examinations performed on client-owned cats in the United States between January 1 and December 31, 2023, were retrospectively reviewed. All samples were processed and analyzed by h

Parasitoses of the human central nervous system.

Cerebral involvement in parasitoses is an important clinical manifestation of most of the human parasitoses. Parasites that have been described to affect the central nervous system (CNS), either as the dominant or as a collateral feature, include cestodes (Taenia solium (neurocysticerciasis), Echinococcus granulosus (cerebral cystic echinococcosis), E. multilocularis (cerebral alveolar echinococcosis), Spirometra mansoni (neurosparganosis)), nematodes (Toxocara canis and T. cati (neurotoxocariasis), Trichinella spiralis (neurotrichinelliasis), Angiostrongylus cantonensis and A. costaricensis (

Human Sparganosis in Korea.

BACKGROUND: Sparganosis is a larval cestodiasis caused by the plerocercoid of Spirometra spp. Since the first description of human sparganosis in 1924, several hundred cases have been reported in Korea. However, systematic approaches for literature surveys of Korean sparganosis have seldom appeared. METHODS: We searched publicly available databases such as PubMed, Research Information Sharing Service, and Korea Medical Citation Index with relevant Medical Subject Headings. RESULTS: At least 438 Korean sparganosis cases have been described from 1924 to 2015. Preoperative diagnosis has been si

Risk of Environmental Contamination by Gastrointestinal Parasites in Public Areas of the Central Plateau Microregion of Brazil: A Public Health Concern.

The risk of zoonotic parasitic infections is closely linked to direct and indirect interactions between animals and humans. The mutual coexistence of species in public spaces predisposes individuals to gastrointestinal parasitosis owing to various social and hygienic-sanitary factors. This study aimed to assess the risk of environmental contamination by gastrointestinal parasites in fecal samples collected from parks and public squares in 18 municipalities located in a microregion of the central plateau of Brazil, correlating the collection with the population size of each municipality. We col

Cystic echinococcosis in donkeys in eastern Africa.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is endemic in humans and domestic animals in eastern Africa. All the species of the Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato complex have been reported in this region except for E. equinus, possibly due to the small number of studies involving equids. This study reports the frequency of different Echinococcus species in donkeys from eastern Africa. A total of 5961 donkeys were examined during meat inspection in 3 slaughterhouses in Kenya. Identification of Echinococcus spp. was achieved through polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment-length polymorphism and sequenci

Recurrent eosinophilic pleuritis caused by sparganum infection: A case report and review of the literature.

RATIONALE: Sparganosis is an infectious disease caused by a larval tapeworm of the genus Spirometra, which commonly invades subcutaneous tissues. Pulmonary and pleural involvement due to sparganum has been rarely reported previously. PATIENT CONCERNS: We herein described a case of recurrent eosinophilic pleuritis in a 24-year-old woman. She was admitted with persistent cough and shortness of breath for more than 1 month. Initial chest computed tomography scan suggested right pleural effusion and diffuse pleural thickening. Slightly elevated eosinophil counts were found in both the peripheral

Prevalence of faecal-borne parasites in colony stray cats in northern Italy.

Endoparasitic infections are common in stray cats. Many of these parasites are responsible for zoonoses, and stray cats can be a source of environmental contamination. The prevalence of parasites in 139 stray colony cats in the city of Milan, northern Italy, was investigated by faecal examination. The overall prevalence of endoparasites was 50.4%, with 11 different parasites found. Parasites with zoonotic potential were detected in 49.6% of cats. Concurrent infections with two or more zoonotic parasites were recorded in 14.3% of cats. Among the parasites found, the most common was Toxocara cat

Survey of parasitic fauna data from wild animals through coproparasitological diagnosis in Southern Brazil.

BACKGROUND: The proximity between people and their domestic animals with wild animal populations can result in the spread of diseases with a significant impact on public health. Infection by parasites in wildlife is considered an important bioindicator of the current state of ecosystems, and studying the epidemiology of these infections is essential for a better understanding of natural foci. However, research on parasites in southern Brazil, especially in Rio Grande do Sul (RS), is considered incipient. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to identify the parasitic fauna of wild animals in the

A hidden traveler in the brain: A 19-year odyssey of migratory cerebral sparganosis.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral sparganosis is a rare parasitic infection of the central nervous system caused by the plerocercoid larva of Spirometra species. A hallmark of the disease is the dynamic migratory behavior of the parasite within the brain, often resulting in progressive neurological symptoms and shifting radiologic features. While most cases are diagnosed within a few years of symptom onset, chronic cases spanning more than a decade are exceedingly rare. Understanding long-term imaging evolution, migratory patterns, and treatment strategies in these rare cases is crucial for optimal managem

Detection of heartworm antigen without cross-reactivity to helminths and protozoa following heat treatment of canine serum.

BACKGROUND: Detection of Dirofilaria immitis, or heartworm, through antigen in sera is the primary means of diagnosing infections in dogs. In recent years, the practice of heat-treating serum prior to antigen testing has demonstrated improved detection of heartworm infection. While the practice of heat-treating serum has resulted in earlier detection and improved sensitivity for heartworm infections, it has been suggested that heat treatment may cause cross reactivity with A. reconditum and intestinal helminth infections of dogs. No studies have assessed the potential cross-reactivity of these

Prevalence of parasitism in client-owned dogs determined by fecal examinations in the Pacific northwest, United States, in 2021-2023.

It is important to continuously monitor the prevalence of parasitic infections in client-owned dogs. However, very limited information is available for the Pacific Northwest (PNW) region of the United States (US). Our main study objective was to determine the prevalence of parasitism observed in the feces of client-owned dogs in the PNW, US. Additionally, the prevalence of parasitic infections was statistically compared by sex, age, and seasonality. Results of all the fecal examinations with various methodologies performed at Zoetis Reference Laboratories in Mukilteo, Washington, from February

Disseminated and migratory sparganosis in the central nervous system: A case report and literature review of combined spinal and intracranial involvement.

BACKGROUND: Central nervous system (CNS) sparganosis is an exceptionally rare parasitic infection caused by the larvae of Spirometra species. Its migratory nature and nonspecific clinical presentation often lead to misdiagnosis, posing significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. While CNS involvement typically affects either the brain or spinal cord, disseminated cases involving both regions are exceedingly rare. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the case of a 34-year-old woman who initially presented with progressive low back pain and paraparesis. She was diagnosed with spinal sparganosis f
