BACKGROUND: Most patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) have working memory (WM) impairment, which can be improved by virtual reality-based working memory (VR-WM) training; however, the specific neural mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to clarify how VR-WM training improves WM in patients with MDD and further explore the role of the frontotemporal lobe in related neural mechanisms.
METHODS: A total of 57 patients with MDD were included in a randomized controlled study to clarify the effects of 20 sessions of VR-WM training on WM in patients with MDD and to explore the role of

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies suggested that green space is beneficial for the cognitive development in children. However, evidence in adolescents is limited. Therefore, we aim to investigate green space exposure in association with attention and behaviour in adolescents.
METHODS: This study includes 596 Flemish adolescents between 13 and 17 years old. Attention was assessed with Stroop Test (selective attention) and Continuous Performance Test (sustained and selective attention). Behaviour was determined based on the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Green space was estimated in sev

BACKGROUND: Clinical practice currently lacks objective and accurate screening tools for minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE). Therefore, we aimed to develop an MHE prediction model based on common risk factors.
METHODS: A total of 514 and 191 cirrhotic patients were included in the training and external validation cohorts, respectively. Best subset selection was applied to screen for predictors. Logistic regression was selected for model development because it outperformed four machine learning algorithms (Random Forest, Adaptive Boosting, Support Vector Machines, and Naive Bayes) in this st

Individuals suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and schizophrenia (SCZ) frequently exhibit symptoms of cognitive disassociations, which are linked to poor functional integration among brain regions. The loss of functional integration can be assessed using graph metrics computed from functional connectivity matrices (FCMs) derived from neuroimaging data. A healthy brain at rest is known to exhibit small-world features with high clustering coefficients and shorter path lengths in contrast to random networks. The aim of this study was to compare the small-world properties of prefro

Huntington disease (HD) is characterized by several hyperkinesias though motor slowness is also another cardinal in this disease. In addition, self-paced timing movements are also disturbed in HD, which may also affect several rhythmic voluntary movements such as gait. Motor slowness can be measured with clinical scales such as the Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale (UHDRS) and timed tests, but also with the reaction time (RT) paradigm. We evaluated RT as a measure of motor slowness in 30 patients with genetically confirmed Huntington's disease and 24 control subjects. We also evaluated

OBJECTIVES: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is often accompanied by executive function (EF) impairment, highlighting the need for accessible and quantitative assessment approaches. In this study, we applied our previously developed game-based executive function assessment tool (EFAT) to evaluate EF performance in TLE patients.
METHODS: Thirty-two TLE patients and 29 healthy controls (HCs) completed a comprehensive battery of standardized tests, including the Stroop Color-Word Test (SCWT) and the Trail Making Test (TMT), as well as the EFAT. Metrics from the EFAT (number of touches, number of cor

The main goal of this study was to assess the changes in brain activities of patients with severe depression by applying transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) using event related potentials (ERPs). Seven patients (four males, with the mean age 34.85 ± 4.25) were asked to fill out Beck's depression questionnaires. EEG signals of subjects were recorded during Stroop test. This test entailed 360 stimulations, which included 120 congruent, 120 incongruent, and 120 neutral stimulations lasting for 12 min. Subsequently, the dorso lateral prefrontal cortex in patients' left hemisphere was st

BACKGROUND: Neurocognitive deficits have been well documented in patients with schizophrenia. Research has shown that a significant proportion of patients with schizophrenia have co-morbid obsessive-compulsive symptoms/disorder (OCS/OCD). However, the impact of OCS/OCD on various neurocognitive domains in patients with schizophrenia is less understood.
METHODS: 40 patients with schizophrenia and comorbid OCD (Group-I) were matched with 39 patients with schizophrenia without OCD (Group-II) and were assessed on Trail making test A and B (TMT-A/B), Controlled Oral Word Association test (COWA), S

BACKGROUND: Extreme weight conditions (EWC) groups along a continuum may share some biological risk factors and intermediate neurocognitive phenotypes. A core cognitive trait in EWC appears to be executive dysfunction, with a focus on decision making, response inhibition and cognitive flexibility. Differences between individuals in these areas are likely to contribute to the differences in vulnerability to EWC. The aim of the study was to investigate whether there is a common pattern of executive dysfunction in EWC while comparing anorexia nervosa patients (AN), obese subjects (OB) and healthy

This review covers the effect of drugs affecting anxiety using four psychological procedures for inducing experimental anxiety applied to healthy volunteers and patients with anxiety disorders. The first is aversive conditioning of the skin conductance responses to tones. The second is simulated public speaking, which consists of speaking in front of a video camera, with anxiety being measured with psychometric scales. The third is the Stroop Color-Word test, in which words naming colors are painted in the same or in a different shade, the incongruence generating a cognitive conflict. The last

One of the hottest debates in psychology-whether bilingual-monolingual differences exist in cognitive control-is at a stalemate. Here we propose that the stalemate could be broken by shifting the research focus from whether those differences emerge to why they should. We offer an example of this approach by testing the assumption of current theories of language-control associations that adaptive control is involved in bilingualism, specifically language production. Unbalanced Italian-English bilinguals living in the Milan area completed a Stroop task in their L1 and a picture-naming task in th

The Addiction-Stroop test has been widely used to investigate the attentional correlates of alcohol and drug abuse; however, the majority of the studies have been conducted with European and American participants. The present study tested whether Iranian drug abusers show higher attentional bias for drug-related stimuli. Participants included drug abusers (N = 53; 100% male), with a clinical history of opium and heroin abuse, who were in a Methadone Maintenance Therapy program. Only nonabusers (N = 71; 71, 54% male) with a history of having never abused of drugs or alcohol participated in the

INTRODUCTION: Changes in brain intrinsic connectivity on the timescale of minutes, as provoked by a cognitive task, have not been well documented.
METHODS: A total of two 7.5-min 7 Tesla functional MRI (fMRI) scans (Run 1 and Run 2), separated by 90 s, were acquired for 23 healthy participants during cognitive exertion induced by the Stroop color-word interference task. Independent component analysis (ICA) of the paired Run 1 and Run 2 fMRI acquisitions identified components with distinct spatial and temporal signatures.
RESULTS: The spatial extent of the ICA components coincided with hubs o

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effects of combined transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and aerobic exercise (AE) on executive function and hematological markers in poststroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) patients.
METHODS: A total of 74 PSCI patients were randomly assigned to three groups: the tDCS + AE, tDCS, and AE groups. The tDCS group received 2.0 mA anodal stimulation over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) for 30 min, five days per week for four weeks. The AE group performed moderate-intensity exercise (60-70% HRmax) for 30 min with sham tDCS. The combine

The present study investigated the neural correlates of attentional deficits in fibromyalgia through an Oddball Dual Task and an Emotional Stroop Task, both performed during EEG recordings. Thirty female participants were recruited, being divided into two groups: a group of patients with fibromyalgia (FM, n = 15, Mage = 51.87, SDage = 7.12) and a healthy control group (HC, n = 15, Mage = 46.13, SDage = 8.41). In the Emotional Stroop Task, the behavioural results showed that patients with FM had less hits and longer times reactions than healthy controls. These results were consistent with those
