This study examined color-concept associations among designers and non-designers with commonly used warning and operation concepts. This study required 199 designers and 175 non-designers to indicate their choice among nine colors to associate with each of the 38 concepts in a color-concept table. The results showed that the designers and non-designers had the same color associations and similar strengths of stereotypes for 17 concepts. The strongest color-concept stereotypes for both groups were red-danger, red-fire, and red-hot. However, the designers and non-designers had different color as

This paper presents a wearable, open-source system that combines electromyography (EMG) and functional electrical stimulation (FES) to restore hand function in individuals with disabilities caused by cervical spinal cord injuries or stroke. The device captures electrical signals produced during volitional muscle contractions and analyzes them to interpret the user's intent to move. This information is then used to stimulate impaired muscles, promoting improved hand function and rehabilitation. We detail the design, prototyping, and testing of the system, emphasizing its modularity, affordabili

Digital health technologies have untapped potential to transform community health systems, and they are underutilized for chronic HIV care and electronic data management in low- and middle-income countries. We describe the design, development, and use of a mobile health application in community-based HIV prevention, care, and treatment programs implemented in Ethiopia since 2017. Initially, these programs utilized aggregate data collection methods, which were fragmented, non-uniform, and largely paper-based, posing challenges to data quality and data use. Local software developers applied user

While commendable progress has been made in user-centric research on mobile assistive systems for blind and low-vision (BLV) individuals, references that directly inform robot navigation design remain rare. To bridge this gap, we conducted a comprehensive human study involving interviews with 26 guide dog handlers, four white cane users, nine guide dog trainers, and one O&M trainer, along with 15+ hours of observing guide dog-assisted walking. After de-identification, we open-sourced the dataset to promote human-centered development and informed decision-making for assistive systems for BLV pe
