[Neovascular age-related macular degeneration under anti-angiogenic therapy : Subretinal fluid is a relevant prognostic parameter].

BACKGROUND: Due to its progressive nature neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) is the most common cause of irreversible vision loss and blindness in people aged 60 or older. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) plays an important role in monitoring this exudative disease. However, prognostic factors for visual rehabilitation under anti-angiogenic therapy are still rare. It was the aim of this study to identify prognostic parameters based on OCT. METHODS: In this study 17 patients with nAMD were included and treated with 3 intravitreal ranibizumab injections. Stratus-OCT and Cirru

Optical coherence tomographic evaluation of foveal hard exudates in patients with diabetic maculopathy accompanying macular detachment.

OBJECTIVE: To study morphologic changes of serous retinal detachment (SRD) and hyperreflective dots, which have been reported to be precursors of hard exudates, detectable in SRD using optical coherence tomography (OCT) to assess whether or not the OCT findings are correlated with the subfoveal deposition of hard exudates in patients with diabetic macular edema (DME) accompanied by SRD. DESIGN: Retrospective chart review. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-eight eyes of 19 patients with DME accompanied by SRD. METHODS: We imaged SRD and the hyperreflective dots in SRD using spectral domain OCT (SD-OCT).

[Von Hippel-Lindau disease: family study].

CASE REPORT: The case of 5 members of a family who suffer from Von Hippel-Lindau disease (VHL) is presented. It is shown that retinal capillary hemangioma was the main ophthalmic symptom, with hemovitreous and tractional retinal detachment as the main complications. DISCUSSION: VHL disease is rare, but very serious, even fatal, thus it is important to obtain an early diagnosis by ophthalmoscopy, in order to change the visual prognosis and life expectancy, not only for the patient, but also for the family.

Maternal intrauterine herpes simplex virus infection leading to persistent fetal vasculature.

Herpes simplex virus can cause serious ocular and systemic disease in the neonate. The mode of transmission to the neonate is usually from the maternal birth canal to the fetus intrapartum; but much more rarely, hematogenous transplacental infection can affect the developing fetus months prior to birth. Persistent fetal vasculature occurs when there is persistence of the fetal ocular vasculature, which normally regresses prior to birth. To our knowledge, we report the first case of serologically proven intrauterine herpes simplex virus infection associated with bilateral persistent fetal vascu

---Pars plana vitrectomy in congenital X-linked retinoschisis: a scoping review.

PURPOSE: Congenital X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS) has limited treatment options. Gene augmentation via pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) and subretinal RS1 gene delivery is promising, yet it is unclear how PPV may impact outcomes. We explored literature to better understand PPV outcomes in XLRS. METHODS: A scoping review of PPV in XLRS categorized studies based on surgical indication: PPV for foveal schisis (Category 1) and PPV for other XLRS sequelae, such as retinal detachment (RD) (Category 2). Studies were excluded if they did not report visual and anatomic outcomes, including foveal schisis st

Association of Treatment Type and Loss to Follow-up With Tractional Retinal Detachment in Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy.

IMPORTANCE: The association of proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) interventions of panretinal photocoagulation (PRP) and intravitreal injections (IVIs) with tractional retinal detachment (TRD) is unclear. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether different treatment types or a 6-month or longer period of loss to follow-up (LTFU) is associated with TRD. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This nested case-control study included data from January 1, 2000, to June 30, 2021, of patients with PDR. Those who progressed to TRD were matched to non-TRD controls up to a 5:1 ratio. Exclusion criteria inclu

TRAUMATIC CORNEAL LACERATION IN NORTHWESTERN NIGERIA.

BACKGROUND: Corneal laceration is a partial or full thickness corneal injury resulting from direct or indirect ocular trauma. Cornea laceration generally leads to the development of corneal opacity which is a significant cause of blindness worldwide, particularly in developing countries where facility for corneal transplant is not readily available. Clinical outcomes depend on causes, the part of cornea involved, and availability of skilled human resource and presence of corneal transplant services. AIM: To assess the presentation, causes, and outcome of management of traumatic cornea lacerat

BAX activation in mouse retinal ganglion cells occurs in two temporally and mechanistically distinct steps.

Background Pro-apoptotic BAX is a central mediator of retinal ganglion cell (RGC) death after optic nerve damage. BAX activation occurs in two stages including translocation of latent BAX to the mitochondrial outer membrane (MOM) and then permeabilization of the MOM to facilitate the release of apoptotic signaling molecules. As a critical component of RGC death, BAX is an attractive target for neuroprotective therapies and an understanding of the kinetics of BAX activation and the mechanisms controlling the two stages of this process in RGCs is potentially valuable in informing the development

A Narrative Review on Managing Retinopathy of Prematurity: Insights Into Pathogenesis, Screening, and Treatment Strategies.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a rare proliferative ocular condition that can happen in premature babies (born preterm <36 weeks) or who weigh <1.5 kg at birth (low birth weight babies). ROP is a major cause of childhood blindness. It is a premature disease since retina vascularization is completed only by 40 weeks of life. The survivability for preterm infants has increased owing to recent improvements in neonatal care during the past decade. As a result, the prevalence of ROP has risen concurrently. The abnormal development of blood vessels in the retina is the cause of this illness. It

Surgical decisions in the setting of zonulopathy.

An 85-year-old man with a history of type 2 diabetes, pseudoexfoliation (PXF) in both eyes, and tamsulosin use was referred for the evaluation of a dense cataract in the right eye and a subluxated intraocular lens (IOL) in the left eye. Unfortunately, his surgery in the left eye was complicated by diffuse zonulopathy. The referring surgeon placed a 3-piece IOL in the sulcus. However, the passively fixated 3-piece IOL moved inferiorly causing monocular diplopia for over a year. Because the patient was pleased with the IOL immediately postoperatively, a refixation procedure was performed in the
