Perhaps correlational but not causal: no effect of dyslexic readers' magnocellular system on their eye movements during reading.

During reading, dyslexic readers exhibit more and longer fixations and a higher percentage of regressions than normal readers. It is still a matter of debate, whether these divergent eye movement patterns of dyslexic readers reflect an underlying problem in word processing or whether they are - as the proponents of the magnocellular deficit hypothesis claim - associated with deficient visual perception that is causal for dyslexia. To overcome problems in the empirical linkage of the magnocellular theory with reading, a string processing task is presented that poses similar demands on visual pe

Right hemisphere reading mechanisms in a global alexic patient.

We investigated the implicit, or covert, reading ability of a global alexic patient (EA) to help determine the contribution of the right hemisphere to reading. Previous studies of alexic patients with left hemisphere damage have suggested that the ability to derive meaning from printed words that cannot be read out loud may reflect right hemisphere reading mechanisms. Other investigators have argued that residual left hemisphere abilities are sufficient to account for implicit reading and moreover do not require the postulation of a right hemisphere system that has no role in normal reading pr

A genetic window to auditory-verbal problems in bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder is a high prevalent psychiatric condition entailing recurrent episodes of elevated mood and depression, but also diverse cognitive problems. One deficit observed in patients concerns to auditory-verbal processing. Being a hereditary condition with a complex genetic architecture, it is not clear which genes contribute to this deficit. We show that candidates for bipolar disorder significantly overlap with candidates for clinical conditions resulting from a deficit in the phonological loop of working memory, particularly, developmental dyslexia and specific language impairment.

Biological impact of music and software-based auditory training.

Auditory-based communication skills are developed at a young age and are maintained throughout our lives. However, some individuals - both young and old - encounter difficulties in achieving or maintaining communication proficiency. Biological signals arising from hearing sounds relate to real-life communication skills such as listening to speech in noisy environments and reading, pointing to an intersection between hearing and cognition. Musical experience, amplification, and software-based training can improve these biological signals. These findings of biological plasticity, in a variety of

Orthographic and phonological processing of Chinese characters: an fMRI study.

The present study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the neural mechanisms underlying the orthographic and phonological processing of Chinese characters. Four tasks were devised, including one homophone judgment and three physical judgments of characters, pseudo-characters, and Korean-like nonsense figures. While the left occipitotemporal region, left dorsal processing stream, and right middle frontal gyrus constitute a network for orthographic processing, the left premotor gyrus, left middle/inferior frontal gyrus, supplementary motor area (SMA), and the left tem

Delta EEG band as a marker of left hypofrontality for language in schizophrenia patients.

Frontal hypoactivation has consistently been demonstrated in schizophrenia patients. We hypothesized that this well-known deficit is asymmetrical, ie, centered over left frontal locations and, in-line with Crow's theory, associated with both loss of linguistic asymmetry and correlated with positive symptoms. Electroencephalography delta band was used as a quantitative index of cortical inhibition in 17 paranoid schizophrenia patients with prevailing positive symptoms and 17 matched control subjects. Delta amplitude was measured by 38 electrodes, while participants performed 3 linguistic tasks,

Receptive language and speech production in children with auditory neuropathy/dyssynchrony type hearing loss.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to characterize the receptive language and speech production abilities of school-aged children with auditory neuropathy/dyssynchrony (AN/AD) and to compare those abilities to children with sensorineural (SN) hearing loss of similar age and degree of hearing loss. DESIGN: Standardized speech and language tests were carried out on 12 AN/AD children, aged between 57 and 167 mo. Each of these subjects was a full-time hearing aid user or had been just before testing. Receptive language skills were assessed using the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT) an

The impact of periventricular brain injury on reading and spelling abilities in the late elementary and adolescent years.

The present study was designed: (1) to investigate the long-term consequences of both the presence and the severity of periventricular brain injury (PVBI) on intellectual, academic, and cognitive outcome in extremely-low-birthweight (ELBW: < 1,000 grams) children at a mean age of 11 years; and (2) to determine the nature of the underlying difficulties associated with academic problems in these children. The results indicated that ELBW children without PVBI performed as well as full-term children on intelligence, academic, and cognitive ability tests. In contrast, ELBW children with mild and se

How differences in anatomy and physiology and other aetiology affect the way we label and describe speech in individuals with cleft lip and palate.

BACKGROUND: Speech in individuals with cleft lip and/or palate (CLP) is a complex myriad of presenting symptoms. It is uniquely associated with the structural difference of velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI), together with a wide and heterogeneous range of other aetiologies which often co-occur. The nature of the speech sound disorder (SSD) including VPI may also change over the course of an individual's care pathway. Differences in terminology and approaches to analysis are currently used, resulting in confusion internationally. Additionally, current diagnostic labels and classification syste

Variable Practice to Enhance Speech Learning in Ultrasound Biofeedback Treatment for Childhood Apraxia of Speech: A Single Case Experimental Study.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of practice variability, through prosodic variation during speech sound training, in biofeedback treatment for children with childhood apraxia of speech. It was hypothesized that variable practice would facilitate speech sound learning. METHOD: Six children ages 8-16 years with persisting speech sound errors due to childhood apraxia of speech participated in a single-subject experimental design. For each participant, 2 speech sound targets were treated with ultrasound visual feedback training: one with prosodic variation (i.e., pract

Validation of the Acoustic Voice Quality Index in the Lithuanian Language.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to validate the Acoustic Voice Quality Index in Lithuanian language (AVQI-LT) and investigate the feasibility and robustness of its diagnostic accuracy, differentiating normal and dysphonic voice. METHODS: A total of 184 native Lithuanian subjects with normal voices (n = 46) and with various voice disorders (n = 138) were asked to read aloud the Lithuanian text and to sustain the vowel /a/. A sentence with 13 syllables and a 3-second midvowel portion of the sustained vowel were edited. Both speech tasks were concatenated, and perceptually rated for

Determining normal and abnormal lip shapes at border positions for use as a longitudinal surgical outcome measure.

Objective measures of facial movement are important for interventions where surgical repositioning of facial structures can influence soft tissue mobility and include the management of patients with cleft lip, facial nerve palsy and orthognathic surgery. As such, the aim of this study is to present a method for determining the outcome of surgical procedures on lip shape during speech. A control group (CG) of 115 average subjects and 30 patients with a Class 3 malocclusion requiring bimaxillary surgery performed four reproducible verbal utterances during image capture using a non-invasive, thre

[Situation-adapted personnel alerting and staff allocation in mass casualty incidents: concept, calculation and technical implementation].

BACKGROUND: In mass casualty incidents (MCI), hospitals must mobilize substantial personnel resources within minutes to hours. Personnel alerting is a central element of the hospital emergency and contingency plan (HECP), yet in practice it is frequently insufficiently systematized and quantitatively underpinned. In addition, technical alerting infrastructures display parallelism and feedback limits that constrain the achievable alerting speed. Empirical data from a recent evaluation of a German hospital of basic and standard care showed that only 2.4% of the total workforce could be mobilized

Longitudinal data on speech outcomes in internationally adopted children compared with non-adopted children with cleft lip and palate.

BACKGROUND: At the beginning of the 21st century, international adoptions of children with cleft lip and/or palate increased dramatically in Sweden. Many children arrived partially or totally unoperated, despite being at an age when palatoplasty has usually been performed. To date, the speech development of internationally adopted (IA) children has been described up to age 7-8 years, but later development remains unstudied. AIMS: To investigate speech development between ages 5 and 10 years in children born with cleft lip and palate (CLP) adopted from China and to compare them with non-adopte

Peripheral phoneme encoding and discrimination in aging and hearing impairment.

Speech perception difficulties in noise are common among older adults and individuals with hearing impairment, but also occur among younger adults whose audiometric thresholds are within the clinically-normal range. We examined how aging, cochlear synaptopathy (CS), and outer hair cell (OHC) damage affect speech encoding and phoneme discrimination. Envelope-following responses (EFRs) to rectangular amplitude-modulated (RAM) tones and speech-like phoneme pairs were recorded in quiet using EEG, and behavioral discrimination was assessed in quiet, and with ipsilateral and contralateral noise. Children's speech recognition scores: the Speech Intelligibility Index and proficiency factors for age and hearing level.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to predict consonant recognition scores of adults, children, and children with hearing impairment, using the Speech Intelligibility Index (SII). It was hypothesized that an adult-derived transfer function would be insufficient to predict the scores for children, and that transfer functions for normally hearing listeners would be insufficient to predict scores for children with hearing impairment. Proficiency corrections for age and hearing loss were explored. DESIGN: A 21-consonant test of speech recognition was applied across five signal to noise ra

Effects of age and hearing loss on recognition of unaccented and accented multisyllabic words.

The effects of age and hearing loss on recognition of unaccented and accented words of varying syllable length were investigated. It was hypothesized that with increments in length of syllables, there would be atypical alterations in syllable stress in accented compared to native English, and that these altered stress patterns would be sensitive to auditory temporal processing deficits with aging. Sets of one-, two-, three-, and four-syllable words with the same initial syllable were recorded by one native English and two Spanish-accented talkers. Lists of these words were presented in isolati

DENTOFACIAL DISHARMONY PATIENTS' SIBILANTS DIFFER FROM CONTROLS' MORE IN SOURCE THAN FILTER PROPERTIES.

This study uses multitaper spectral analysis to examine the differences in consonants produced by patients who present with different dentofacial disharmonies (DFD) including severe overbites (Class II), underbites (Class III) and anterior open bites. Previous studies have found that patients with these malocclusion types all produce sibilants and plosives with increased spectral center of gravity and increased spectral spread relative to controls. This result is puzzling since some DFD groups differ from controls in opposite ways. To better understand the articulatory basis of these differenc

Effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of high-intensity versus low-intensity speech intervention in children with a cleft palate: Protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: In children with a cleft palate with or without a cleft lip (CP±L), some evidence exists for superior results of high-intensity speech intervention (HISI) compared with low-intensity speech intervention (LISI) on speech and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). However, the existing research often involves small sample sizes. Additionally, therapy in these studies is typically administered by researchers with extensive experience in treating speech disorders in these children. In contrast, first-line speech-language pathologists (SLPs) often possess considerably less experience i
