Finding Balance: Insights from Mexican Heritage Families on Living a Healthy Lifestyle in New York City.

Obesity disproportionately affects Hispanic adults and children, especially Mexican Americans. Family-centered interventions (FCIs) for weight loss and obesity prevention tailored to these populations are lacking. Our study (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT07144800) aims to develop a multicomponent culturally tailored FCI for Hispanic American families. To inform intervention development, we conducted 6 Spanish language focus groups with 31 parents/caregivers with overweight or obesity who were recruited from a Hispanic community-serving health services program in New York City. Using rapid qualitative

Academic Stress and Mental Health Challenges Among International Students in China.

International students in China frequently encounter academic and acculturative challenges that adversely affect their psychological wellbeing. However, limited research has integrated quantitative and qualitative evidence to comprehensively examine the determinants of stress, anxiety, and depression among this population. This study investigated the effects of academic and acculturative stressors on the mental health of international students and explored their coping experiences and perceptions of institutional support. An explanatory sequential mixed-methods technique was employed. Quantita

Prevalence of neurasthenia, comorbidity, and association with impairment among a nationally representative sample of US adults.

PURPOSE: There are no current psychiatric epidemiological studies examining prevalence estimates of neurasthenia across different racial and ethnic groups in the US. This study compares prevalence rates of International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) lifetime and 12-month neurasthenia across racial/ethnic groups in the US (Asians, African Americans, Latinos, and non-Latino Whites) and by levels of acculturation. We examine comorbidity of neurasthenia with DSM-IV psychiatric disorders and the association between neurasthenia and impairment. METHODS: We used a pooled sample (N = 10, 118) f

Intersecting Identities Among Hispanic Sexual Minority Youth and Their Relationship With Substance Use and Depressive Symptoms.

PURPOSE: The literature on risk and protective factors for substance use and depression among Hispanic sexual minority youth (HSMY) has largely focused on individual risk and/or protective factors and not how the minoritization of intersecting identity markers may be linked to these outcomes among HSMY. The purpose of this study was to identify intersectional profiles by conducting a latent class analysis of sexual orientation, acculturation, time in the United States, and language and evaluate how class membership is associated with substance use and depressive symptoms. METHODS: This second

Examining the relationship of sociodemographic factors, neighborhood cohesion and abnormal sleep duration among U.S. foreign-born subpopulations in the National Health Interview Survey.

BACKGROUND: Limited studies have examined the relationship of neighborhood cohesion and sleep duration between U.S. foreign-born Hispanics/Latinos and non-Hispanics/Latinos. METHODS: We conducted a multinomial logistic regression using the 2013-2018 National Health Interview Survey on U.S. foreign-born adults ≥18 (N = 27,253). The outcome variable, sleep duration, was categorized as short sleep (≤6 hours), normal sleep (7 to 8 hours), and long sleep (≥9 hours). Neighborhood cohesion was categorized using tertiles (low, medium, high) from self-reported Likert scores. Our model included sociode

Gastric cancer incidence among Hispanics in California: patterns by time, nativity, and neighborhood characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Better understanding about gastric cancer incidence patterns among Hispanics by birthplace, socioeconomic status (SES), and acculturation can improve preventive strategies and disease models. METHODS: Incidence rates, rate ratios, and estimated annual percent change (EAPC) in rates of anatomic and histologic subtype-specific gastric cancer were calculated by age, sex, and nativity among Hispanics using California Cancer Registry data from 1988 through 2004. Incidence rates in 1998 to 2002 were compared by neighborhood SES and Hispanic enclave status according to 2000 US Census dat

Immigrant assimilation and profiles of breast cancer screening behaviors among U.S. immigrant women.

Previous researchers have shown that despite increased prevention and cancer risk awareness, many immigrant women do not receive cancer screenings in a timely manner. We use data from the National Health Interview Survey and Latent Class Analysis to characterize immigrant women in the U.S. in accordance to their risk of engaging in breast cancer prevention. We identify three latent profiles based on use of cancer screenings, sociodemographic characteristics, family cancer history, and immigrant acculturation. Our results show that cancer screening behaviors of immigrants are consistent with pa

Acceptance of a nutrition curriculum for HIV-positive Latinos Living on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Patient-centered nutrition education and counseling can improve the health of HIV-positive persons. This article describes the development and implementation of a Spanish-language, community clinic-based, individually tailored, and culturally specific nutrition curriculum for HIV-positive Latinos living on the U.S.-Mexico border. Important considerations made in serving this population include low acculturation to U.S. culture, monolingual Spanish speaking, cross-border mobility, and dietary behaviors influenced by access to culturally preferred regional foods, some of which may not be nutriti

Culturally sensitive integration of supportive and cognitive behavioral therapy in the treatment of a bicultural dysthymic patient.

A single case study is presented of the successful integration of culturally sensitive supportive and cognitive behavioral therapy to meet the needs of a bicultural man (Mexican/Palestinian) with dysthymia. The patient, a 3rd-year law student, was chronically making self-depreciating negative verbalizations that disrupted his daily functioning. The outcome revealed that the therapeutic alliance was improved by having a therapist of color who was sensitive to cultural issues and acculturation. Supportive therapy, coupled with cognitive behavioral interventions, succeeded in extinguishing the pa

The role of distress tolerance and adverse childhood experiences in depression and suicidal ideation among Latinos: A moderation analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Rates of mental health challenges are rising among Hispanic communities in the United States, yet research examining factors that shape the relationship between depression and suicidal ideation relationship in this population remains limited. The present study investigated whether adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and distress tolerance, both well-documented factors in mental health risk, moderate the association between depressive symptoms and suicidal thoughts. METHODS: Data were collected from 800 Latino adults in Texas who completed validated assessments of depression, su

Binge eating and binge eating disorder in a small-scale, indigenous society: the view from Fiji.

OBJECTIVE: Although the cross-cultural prevalence of anorexia and bulimia nervosa has been investigated in multiple studies, little is known about the prevalence and correlates of binge eating and binge eating disorder (BED) cross-culturally. No published studies to date have explored BED in small-scale, indigenous, or developing societies. The current study investigated the prevalence and correlates of binge eating in a community sample of Fijian women living in rural Fiji. METHODS: Fifty ethnic Fijian women completed a self-report measure developed for this study on dieting and attitudes to

The effect of extended family living on the mental health of three generations within two Asian communities.

BACKGROUND: A study by Shah & Sonuga-Barke (1995) identified a relationship between family structure and the mental health of Pakistani Muslim mothers and their children. Children in extended families fared better, but their mothers fared worse than their nuclear family counterparts. The present study replicates and extends this study by exploring the impact of nuclear and extended family living on the mental health of three generations (children, mothers and grandmothers) in British Hindu as well as Muslim communities. METHOD: 44 Muslim and 42 Hindu families participated in the study. The me

Understanding eating disorders in the Middle East: body dissatisfaction and westernization in Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

INTRODUCTION: Body dissatisfaction is one of the maintaining factors of eating disorders and a well-known risk factor for their development. It was assumed that body dissatisfaction did not afflict non-Western countries. However, body dissatisfaction is reported in non-Western countries, and to what extent westernization is associated with body dissatisfaction and subsequent eating disorders is unknown. The purpose of the present study is to examine the association between Western acculturation and body dissatisfaction in Saudi Arabia and Turkey, and to determine the measurement invariance of

Sleep quality and alcohol-use disorders in a select population of young-adult Mexican Americans.

OBJECTIVE: Adult male Hispanics, particularly those born in the United States, are more likely to drink frequently and to consume larger quantities of alcohol than Whites or Blacks. Because alcohol and other substance-use disorders are frequently associated with disturbances in sleep, this study investigated measures of sleep quality and substance use disorders in a select sample of young-adult Mexican Americans. METHOD: Diagnoses of alcohol-use disorders and other psychiatric disorders (based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Third Edition, Revised), results from

Trauma and latinx sexual- and gender-minority immigrants in the U.S.

Due to their multiple minoritized identities, Latinx sexual- and gender-minority immigrants risk exposure to various forms of traumatic stressors at home and abroad that can result in post-traumatic stress disorder and other comorbid problems like depression. A much-needed review and synthesis of the latest research highlights important factors for practitioners and scholars to consider relevant to this vulnerable and under researched population. A data-driven conceptualization helps identify risk factors across different points in time such as violence and discrimination from communal and ins

Community-driven approach to promoting healthy culturally tailored diets and cardiometabolic health among East African immigrants in San Diego: a community case study.

The East African immigrant community in San Diego has proactively sought multi-generational, nutrition-focused strategies for the prevention and management of cardiometabolic disease. Existing studies on Somali immigrants in the U.S. Midwest document elevated rates of diabetes (4.5-21.1%), overweight/obesity, and dyslipidemia, while qualitative evidence indicates that dietary acculturation, particularly within the first decade of migration, is associated with decreased consumption of traditional foods and increased exposure to sodium- and sugar-dense processed foods. This community case study
