Odontogenic (hematogenic) or sinusopathy (contiguous) brain abscess: Case report.

Brain abscess is a rare infectious condition, affecting 0.4 to 0.9 per 100,000 individuals annually, with classic symptoms of fever, headache, and neurological deficits. The origin can be contiguous, hematogenous, due to ruptures of brain barriers, or cryptogenic. Dental infections, such as those related to Gemella morbillorum, are atypical, and when related to odontogenic sinusitis, it is normally unilateral. This report describes a case of peculiar brain abscess, of unconfirmed source, possibly involving sinusitis or periapical odontogenic lesion in an immunocompetent young woman. A 22-year-

Experimental animal models for brain abscess: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Brain abscess (BA) is a rare, but severe infection and experimental BA animal models may prove crucial for advances in treatment. This review describes the development of experimental BA models and the clinical advances obtained from these, in a historical perspective. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Experimental BA studies from inception until June 15, 2022, were included by searching the PubMed and Embase databases. Inclusion required the use of an experimental BA animal model. Non-bacterial BA models, in vitro studies, veterinarian case-reports, and articles written in non-English langua

Parenchymal Brain Abscess as an Intracranial Complication After Sinusitis.

Brain abscesses caused by sinusitis are rare in the antibiotic era. The purpose of the current manuscript was to report a rare case of a brain abscess located mainly in the frontal lobe after sinusitis, which was initially thought to be meningitis or encephalitis. A 39-year-old man was transferred to our hospital from another neighbouring hospital with tonic-clonic seizures, severe headache, and purulent nasal secretions. For one week, he was taking antibiotics for sinusitis. The computed tomography indicated lesions in the right sinuses but not in the parenchymal brain and thus antibiotics al

Nocardia Brain Abscess Mimicking Metastases in an Immunocompromised Patient.

The differential for ring-enhancing lesions of the brain is extensive, with patient characteristics, particularly immunologic status, crucial to the clinical plan. In immunocompromised patients with a single ring-enhancing lesion, aspergillosis, toxoplasmosis, and nocardial infections are considered. In the case of multiple ring-enhancing lesions, metastases often supersede opportunistic infections on the differential. We present an unusual case of multiple nocardial brain abscesses mimicking metastases in an immunocompromised patient with a history of narcolepsy.

A rare case of polymicrobial brain abscess involving Actinomyces.

Brain abscess is a focal intracranial infection that may present as a life-threatening emergency. Brain abscess can present with a wide range of clinical syndromes, and it results in high morbidity and mortality worldwide. Here we describe a rare case of the polymicrobial right parietal brain abscess, especially associated with Actinomyces in a 59-year-old male who presented with acute onset of left-sided weakness and altered mental status. The patient underwent surgical treatment (burrhole aspiration) and antibiotics with good improvement. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are critical for brain

Anthrax meningoencephalitis complicated with brain abscess - A case report.

Bacillus anthracis is a sporulating gram-positive rod whose main route of entry into the human body is cutaneous. Anthrax meningitis is usually fulminant and fatal. We present here a successfully treated case of anthrax meningoencephalitis complicated with brain abscess. The patient was a shepherd, with disease onset 7 days prior to hospital admission with fever, chills, occipital headache, and vertigo, followed by right hemiplegia, motor aphasia, agitation and coma. He had cutaneous lesions with black eschar on the limbs, which was a clue (along with his occupation), for diagnosis suspicion.

Postoperative Mycoplasma hominis brain abscess: keep it in mind!

A temporal lobe abscess was diagnosed in a 57-year-old man. A urethral catheter had been inserted 12 days earlier, just prior to clot evacuation of a subacute haematoma secondary to an arterio-venous malformation. Fever persisted despite debridement and treatment with meropenem and vancomycin. Gram stains of operative samples showed no bacteria. Extended cultures grew pinpoint colonies after 5 days. Meanwhile, sequencing of bacterial 16S rDNA from operative specimens had identified Mycoplasma hominis; the bacterial colonies were subsequently similarly identified. The patient responded promptly

Brain abscess in hepatopulmonary syndrome associated with biliary atresia.

The first-choice therapy for biliary atresia (BA) is Kasai hepatoportoenterostomy, which has been shown to greatly improve outcome. Various long-term complications, however, such as portal hypertension and hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS), can occur in patients with native liver. A rare case of brain abscess in an 11-year-old girl with HPS associated with BA is reported. The patient underwent hepatoportoenterostomy for BA at 53 days of age, with resolution of hyperbilirubinemia. At 10 years of age, she was diagnosed with severe HPS with right-to-left shunting, and preparations for liver transpla

Brain abscess due to odontogenic infection: a case report.

In this report, we describe a case of brain abscess due to odontogenic infection. A 53-year-old female who had been suffering from headache and trismus for two weeks visited the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Sun Dental Hospital (Daejeon, Korea). Even after several routine tests, we still could not make a diagnosis. However, after the combined multidisciplinary efforts of oral surgeons and neurosurgeons, the patient was treated for odontogenic infection and made an uneventful recovery. Therefore, patients with infections in the head and neck region showing symptoms such as

Nocardia farcinica brain abscess: epidemiology, pathophysiology, and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Infections caused by Nocardia farcinica are potentially lethal because of the organism's tendency to disseminate and resist antibiotics. Central nervous system involvement has been documented in 30% of infections caused N. farcinica. METHODS: Case report and review of the literature. RESULTS: A case of primary brain abscess caused by N. farcinica, identified by 16SrRNA sequencing, is presented, and 39 cases reported previously in the literature are reviewed. Our patient underwent a neuronavigation-guided right frontal craniotomy and was treated with trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole

Intracerebral abscess: a rare complication of Deep Brain Stimulation.

INTRODUCTION: Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a therapeutic option for some forms of Parkinson's disease (PD). The main adverse effects of this surgery are: infection (2-9%), haemorrhage (1-4%) and seizures (1-3%). We report a rare complication of DBS: an intracranial abscess. CASE REPORT: A 59-year-old male who had suffered PD for 19 years was submitted to bilateral subthalamic nucleus DBS in September 2003, when he was 52. One month later, he developed an inflammatory reaction of the skin and subcutaneous tissue surrounding the area of the subcutaneous DBS system. No infectious agent was is

Brain abscess mimicking lung cancer metastases; a case report.

A 76-year-old woman came to us because of staggering, fever, dysarthria, and appetite loss. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain revealed multiple masses with surrounding edema. Chest X-ray and computed tomography demonstrated a mass-like lesion in the left lung and left pleural effusion. Lung cancer and multiple brain metastases were suspected. However, the brain lesions demonstrated a high intensity through diffusion-weighted MRI. The finding was an important key to differentiate brain abscesses from lung cancer metastases.

Intracranial brain abscess preceded by orbital cellulitis and sinusitis.

A 17-year-old boy with pyrexia, headache, and frequent drop attacks reported an acute onset of periorbital pain and swelling 1 month previously. Coronal computed tomography (CT) identified an ethmoid sinusitis, which was treated with functional endoscopic sinus surgery and intravenous gentamicin, prostaphylline, and metronidazone. Because of persistent symptoms, the patient returned 1 month later. The CT identified accumulation of debris in both frontal sinuses and a multilobulated lesion over the right frontal lobe. Bicoronal craniotomy was performed, and a mass located in the right frontal l

Nocardia farcinica brain abscess in a patient without immunocompromise.

Brain abscess has an incidence of 1 per 100,000 in developed countries and a mortality rate of 10%. Cerebral infections with Nocardia farcinica have a mortality of up to 90%. Nocardial species are important pathogens in immunocompromised hosts, but infections in immunocompetent patients are extremely rare. We report a case of primary brain abscess with N. farcinica in a patient without immunosuppression, which was treated with surgery and a one-year course of oral moxifloxacin.
