OBJECTIVES: The serological diagnosis of human infection with Angiostrongylus cantonensis remains problematic because there are no commercially available validated tests. Most laboratories use domestically prepared tests such as the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or immunoblotting. Since laboratory facilities are not always available in endemic areas, we developed and assessed a rapid lateral flow immunochromatographic assay (AcQuickDx Test) to detect anti-A. cantonensis antibodies in human serum.

Interactions with serum proteins such as alpha1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) can have a significant effect on the behavior and pharmacokinetics of drugs. Ultrafast affinity extraction and peak profiling were used with AGP microcolumns to examine these processes for several model drugs (i.e., chlorpromazine, disopyramide, imipramine, lidocaine, propranolol and verapamil). Here is an attempt to establish that a close relation exists between the chemical formulae of organophosphates and their affinities for lipids, proteins and water. We carried out this study on two systems similar to human plasma. First, each component was sorted, then the organophosphates were detected and titrated by gas chromatography with flame photometry detector. Thiophosphates had a greater affinity for lipids than phosphates. Fixation of proteins was only observed on three hydrophilous organophosphates: phosphamidon, dichlorvos, ciodrin.
