The Relationship of Preterm and Small for Gestational Age with Child Cognition During School-Age Years.

BACKGROUND: Children born preterm and/or small for gestational age (SGA) are at increased risk of poor cognitive outcomes, particularly in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the cognitive and academic deficits during the school-age years in children born preterm or SGA compared with those in children born term adequate for gestational age (AGA) in rural Vietnam. METHODS: Children born to women in a preconception micronutrient supplementation trial in Vietnam were classified into 3 groups: preterm AGA (n =138), term SGA (n =169), and term AGA (n =

Oligodendrocyte dysfunction in human age-related cognitive decline.

Cognitive decline in aging impacts quality of life, for which therapeutic interventions are lacking. Why some individuals experience more severe cognitive decline with aging is unclear. Here we uncover a role for the brain's myelin-forming cells-oligodendrocytes-in explaining this variance. By investigating neuropathological and transcriptomic changes in human white matter associated with individual rates of cognitive decline in aging, we find that worse cognitive trajectories unexpectedly associate with smaller myelinated axon size, thicker myelin and more oligodendrocytes with downregulation

Age-Related Hearing Loss and Cognition: The Role of Bilingualism.

PURPOSE: Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) has been associated with cognitive decline. Although bilingualism may influence cognitive performance, its interaction with hearing loss remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effects of ARHL and bilingualism on cognitive functioning in older adults. METHOD: In this cross-sectional study, 100 older adults (≥ 50 years) were recruited from a hospital-based audiology clinic, with 50 participants in each group (monolingual Persian speakers or balanced Persian-Turkish bilinguals). Cognitive performance was assessed using the Persian version of

Fostering healthy cognitive ageing in people living with HIV.

Prevalence and incidence of HIV among people aged 50 years and older continue to rise worldwide, generating increasing awareness among care providers, scientists, and the HIV community about the importance of brain health in older adults with HIV. Many age-related factors that adversely affect brain health can occur earlier and more often among people with HIV, including epigenetic ageing, chronic medical conditions (eg, cardiovascular disease), and age-related syndromes (eg, frailty). Extensive dialogue between HIV community leaders, health-care providers, and scientists has led to the develo

Predicting age at Alzheimer's dementia onset with the cognitive clock.

INTRODUCTION: Intervention of Alzheimer's dementia hinges on early diagnosis and advanced planning. This work utilizes the cognitive clock, a novel indicator of brain health, to develop a dementia prediction model that can be easily applied in broad settings. METHODS: Data came from over 3000 community-dwelling older adults. Cognitive age was estimated by aligning Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores to a clock that represents the typical cognitive aging profile. We identified a mean cognitive age at Alzheimer's dementia onset and predicted the corresponding chronological age at person

Promise of metformin for preventing age-related cognitive dysfunction.

The expanded lifespan of people, while a positive advance, has also amplified the prevalence of age-related disorders, which include mild cognitive impairment, dementia, and Alzheimer's disease. Therefore, competent therapies that could improve the healthspan of people have great significance. Some of the dietary and pharmacological approaches that augment the lifespan could also preserve improved cognitive function in old age. Metformin, a drug widely used for treating diabetes, is one such candidate that could alleviate age-related cognitive dysfunction. However, the possible use of metformi

The role of the medial prefrontal cortex in cognition, ageing and dementia.

Humans require a plethora of higher cognitive skills to perform executive functions, such as reasoning, planning, language and social interactions, which are regulated predominantly by the prefrontal cortex. The prefrontal cortex comprises the lateral, medial and orbitofrontal regions. In higher primates, the lateral prefrontal cortex is further separated into the respective dorsal and ventral subregions. However, all these regions have variably been implicated in several fronto-subcortical circuits. Dysfunction of these circuits has been highlighted in vascular and other neurocognitive disord

Neurostimulation techniques to enhance sleep and improve cognition in aging.

Sleep plays a critical role in the process of memory consolidation. In particular, during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) slow wave sleep, slow-oscillations, spindles, hippocampal sharp wave ripples, and their phase coupling are involved in the process of transferring and consolidating information recently encoded and temporarily stored in the hippocampus into long-term memory stored in the neocortex. There is evidence that aging and neurodegenerative conditions, in particular Alzheimer's disease, are associated with changes to this transient grouping of NREM oscillations. Therefore, methods to

Common age-related neuropathologies and yearly variability in cognition.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive variability is a potentially important source of heterogeneity in longitudinal cognitive profiles. We examined the extent to which common age-related neuropathologies including Lewy bodies and Alzheimer's disease (AD) contribute to yearly variability in late life cognition. METHODS: Data came from 1321 community-dwelling older adults who were followed annually for up to 23 years, died and underwent brain autopsy. Cognition was assessed via a comprehensive testing battery. Uniform neuropathologic evaluations assessed burdens of Lewy bodies, AD, infarcts, TDP, hippocampal s

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy in the Digital Age: Presidential Address.

Our field has come a long way in establishing cognitive-behavioral therapy as the empirically supported treatment of choice for a wide range of mental and behavioral health problems. Nevertheless, most individuals with mental disorders do not receive any care at all, and those who do often have difficulty accessing care that is consistently high in quality. Addressing these issues is complex and costly and thus progress has been slow. We are entering an exciting stage in which emerging technologies might offer novel solutions to the treatment gap. This paper discusses a number of technology-en

Current Perspectives on Postoperative Cognitive Dysfunction in the Ageing Population.

Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is defined as a prolonged cognitive function impairment that occurs within weeks to months of a surgical procedure. It is especially prevalent in the elderly population, leading to increased morbidity and mortality. As anaesthetic and surgical care continues to improve and become increasingly safer, a significantly greater number of older patients have elective surgical procedures today, yet this comes with an increased POCD risk as they go through the perioperative phases. Although the pathophysiology behind the development of POCD is still under inv

Is It Possible to Delay or Prevent Age-Related Cognitive Decline?

Already in the 90s, Khachaturian stated that postponing dementia onset by five years would decrease the prevalence of the late onset dementia by 50%. After two decades of lack of success in dementia drug discovery and development, and knowing that worldwide, currently 36 million patients have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, a number that will double by 2030 and triple by 2050, the World Health Organization and the Alzheimer's Disease International declared that prevention of cognitive decline was a 'public health priority.' Numerous longitudinal studies and meta-analyses were conducte

Age dependent levels of plasma homocysteine and cognitive performance.

Elevated plasma homocysteine (hcy) levels, also known as hyperhomocysteinemia (hhcy), have been associated with cognitive impairment and neurodegenerative disorders. Hhcy has been attributed to deficiency of B vitamins which can adversely affect the brain and result in memory loss and poor attention power. Monitoring hcy levels and the use of vitamin supplementation to treat hhcy may therefore prove advantageous for the prevention and management of cognitive impairment. With this in consideration, we measured plasma hcy, folate and vitamin B12 levels in 639 subjects from different age groups i

Age-related neuropathology, cognitive decline, and Alzheimer's disease.

In the last 20 years, there have been tremendous strides made in the understanding of the molecular and cellular processes that occur during brain aging, as well as our understanding of age-related disorders of the central nervous system (CNS). Aging is associated with a decline in cognitive performance, and is the biggest risk factor for the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD), although the underlying basis for both of these observations is poorly defined. Both normal aging and AD are associated with overlapping and increased levels of pathology. Numerous reports have now linked elevation

Veterans have less age-related cognitive decline.

Military service involves exposure to a number of stresses, both psychological and physical. On the other hand, military personnel generally maintain excellent fitness, and veterans have increased access to education and health care. The overall effect on age-related cognitive decline, whether for good or ill, of having served in the armed forces has not been investigated previously. In this study, we examined a diverse population of 208 veterans and 1,216 civilians followed as part of the Epidemiologic Catchment Area Study in 1981, 1982, and 1993 to 1996. We examined change in Mini-Mental Sta

Influence of HIV status and age on cognitive representations of others.

In 2 studies the postulate that the perception of time left in life influences the ways that people conceptualize social relationships was explored. It was hypothesized that when time is limited, emotional aspects of relationships are highly salient. In Study 1, a card-sort paradigm involving similarity judgments demonstrated, for a sample of persons 18 to 88 years old, that the prominence of affect in the mental representations of prospective social partners is positively associated with age. In Study 2, the same experimental approach was applied to a sample of young gay men similar to one an
