The COVID-19 pandemic and dentistry: the clinical, legal and economic consequences - part 1: clinical.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus which causes COVID-19, is highly contagious. Dentistry is a high-risk profession for occupational virus transmission because of the close proximity of the operator to the patient during treatment and the procedural generation of aerosols. The impact on the provision of dental care has been profound, with routine care restricted or paused for a period around the world. There have been adverse consequences for dental education and clinical research. Emergency and urgent care provisions have generally proceeded. However, even

Environmental sustainability and travel within the dental practice.

A significant amount of dentistry's carbon emissions originate from travel (64.5%). Dental-associated travel affects air quality, releasing over 443 tonnes of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and 22 tonnes of particulate matter (PM2.5) annually. This reduction in air quality reduces over 325 quality-adjusted life years (QALY) per year. Wider health impacts associated with noise and traffic incidents doubles the impact on health in QALYs. Dental procedures that require shorter appointment times have disproportionately higher emissions due to patient travel. The dental team can reduce appointment times by

Periodontal and Restorative Treatment of Gingival Recession Associated with Non-Carious Cervical Lesions: Case Study.

The association between the presence of gingival recession and non-carious cervical lesions is a common finding in dentistry. These diseases have multifactorial etiology and the treatment should be multidisciplinary. Although traditionally the majority of professionals treat non-carious cervical lesions only with conventional restorative procedures, in most cases a combination of periodontal and restorative treatments provides the best functional and esthetic results. Thus, the objective of this case report was to present a new option for treatment, which consists of a subepithelial connective

Dental disease in type 3 Von Willebrand disease: a neglected problem.

Type 3 Von Willebrand disease (VWD) is a rare, severe, autosomal recessive bleeding disorder. In our institution, we follow 17 children with type 3 VWD. We have observed a high prevalence of dental disease in these patients prompting us to undertake a retrospective review of our cohort of patients with type 3 VWD to catalogue the extent of their dental disease. Sixteen of these patients have been assessed by our dentistry department. Five children have undergone minor dental procedures (e.g. restorations, stainless steel crowns) and seven major procedures (e.g. dental extractions, pulpotomies

Cleanability of dental instruments--implications of residual protein and risks from Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

Cleaning of dental instruments is the first line of control in reducing the adherent bioburden. The threat of vCJD and the difficulty in removing prion protein has provided a new challenge for cleaning surgical and dental instruments. Prion proteins are also more resistant to many disinfection and sterilisation techniques. A number of different methods are currently available in primary care for cleaning instruments including manual washing, ultrasonic cleaners and washer disinfectors. Manual cleaning of dental instruments is time-consuming, introduces operator error and the risk of puncture w

Concomitant oral findings in children after cardiac transplant.

Heart transplantations have been performed in the Centre for Paediatric Heart Surgery at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen (Germany) since 1988. For further consultation and therapy, some affected children subsequently present at the Polyclinic for Paediatric Dentistry. In all these cases problematic oral findings were diagnosed. It was the aim of this study to describe the different findings and to create a concept for avoiding them in the future. Altogether, 10 children with cardiac transplants (three girls, seven boys) were examined and, where necessary, treated. At the time they firs

Thyroid radiation dose during panoramic and cephalometric dental x-ray examinations.

Radiation exposure from panoramic equipment can be reduced significantly by use of smaller film, adjustment of the beam height to the height of the smaller film, and careful positioning of patients. These techniques have no adverse effect on the quality of the diagnostic information needed in dentistry. In addition to describing methods of reducing exposures from panoramic machines, this study demonstrates that the use of a barrier collar during static, cephalometric examinations can appreciably reduce thyroid exposure. Since the objective is to obtain diagnostic information from the film with

Impact of Maneuverability Constraints on Intraoral Scanner Performance.

Background/Objectives: Intraoral scanners (IOSs) are essential tools in digital dentistry; however, their accuracy remains influenced by clinical conditions such as restricted access, patient movement, or intraoral moisture. Intraoral scanning is performed within a confined space that restricts scanner motion, potentially influencing maneuverability during data acquisition and, consequently, IOS performance. This study investigated the impact of maneuverability constraints on the trueness accuracy and efficiency of IOS under clinically representative intraoral conditions. Methods: Fifteen part

Applications of robot-assisted UV disinfection in dentistry.

Maintaining a microbial-free environment in healthcare facilities is more widely recognized as an essential component of therapies to minimize transmission of viruses associated with healthcare sector. The global spread of COVID-19 and recent outbreaks have presented humanity with previously unheard-of challenges. The development of autonomous disinfection robots seems to be necessary given the urgent need for constant sterilization in the face of a labor shortage. Due to their automated and perceived cost advantages by eliminating cleaning staff, these robots are being advertised more and mor

Major incident response: collecting ante-mortem data.

The Asian tsunami of 26 December 2004, which devastated coastal parts of more than 10 countries in and around the Indian Ocean caused over 200,000 casualties. People from more than 58 nationalities were amongst the victims and subsequently an international effort for disaster victim identification (DVI) was set up, coordinated by Interpol. DVI teams from more than 20 countries took part in the identification process which, because of the complexity of the situation, had to be conducted in an internationally agreed upon procedure. Standard operating protocols of post-mortem (PM) procedures were

Injectable In Situ Thermoreversible Gel Depot System of Lidocaine Nanoemulsion for Prolonged Anesthetic Activity in Dental and Operative Procedures.

Background/Objectives: Lidocaine hydrochloride (LD-HCl) is the most commonly used local anesthetic in dentistry, often administered with epinephrine to extend its duration and reduce systemic absorption. However, its relatively short duration of action, the need for repeated injections, and the unpleasant taste may limit patient compliance and procedural efficiency. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a novel injectable nanoemulsion-based in situ gel depot system of LD to provide prolonged anesthetic activity. Methods: LD-loaded nanoemulsions were formulated by high-shear homogenization f

Appropriateness of antibiotic prescribing in dental practice: results of two clinical audits conducted at a university hospital.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global public health threat, and dentistry contributes substantially to unnecessary antibiotic use. Despite the publication of clear prescribing recommendations by the European Society of Endodontology (ESE) in 2018, inappropriate antibiotic prescribing remains common, particularly in dental emergency settings. This study aimed to evaluate the appropriateness of antibiotic prescribing in a university dental emergency department and to assess the impact of an audit-and-feedback intervention. A prospective two-phase clinical audit was conducted in 2025 a

Antibiotic Prescribing Patterns for Pulpitis in Pediatric Dentistry: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: Pulpitis is a common cause of dental pain in children and is primarily an inflammatory condition that can be effectively managed with local operative treatment. Although antibiotics are indicated only in cases of systemic involvement or infection spread, they are frequently overprescribed in dental practice. This misuse contributes to antimicrobial resistance and adverse health outcomes. This systematic review aimed to evaluate antibiotic prescribing practices for pulpitis in pediatric patients and to assess adherence to current clinical guidelines. Methods: A systematic review was
