[Diagnostic difficulties in differentiation between atopic dermatitis and seborrheic dermatitis in infants].

On the basis of two children with coexistence of atopic and seborrhoeic dermatitis, authors emphasize similarity of clinical symptoms and chronic, recurrent course of these diseases. Atopic dermatitis and seborrheic dermatitis are most common reasons of skin disorders in infants. Location and character of atopic lesions are atypical during infancy. Most often they occur on face and have erythematous-exfoliative and papulovesicular character. Pruritus and anxiety, especially in younger children are often seen. On the contrary seborrhoeic lesions are mostly seen in typical spots, including hairy

Study protocol to investigate the environmental and genetic aetiology of atopic dermatitis: the Indonesian Prospective Study of Atopic Dermatitis in Infants (ISADI).

INTRODUCTION: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is the most common skin disorder in young children worldwide, with a high impact on morbidity and quality of life. To date, no prospective study has been published on the incidence and potential predictors of AD in South East Asian populations. The Indonesian Prospective Study of Atopic Dermatitis in Infants (ISADI) will address the genetic, metabolic and dietary characteristics of mothers and their offspring, as well as potential determinants of AD within the first year of infant life. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This prospective study will be undertaken in abo

Succinate and mitochondrial DNA trigger atopic march from atopic dermatitis to intestinal inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Atopic march has long been recognized as the progression from atopic dermatitis (AD) to food allergy and asthma during infancy and childhood. However, effective blocking is hampered by the lack of specific biomarkers. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the pathologic progression of atopic march trajectories from skin to gut. METHODS: We built an atopic march mouse model by mechanical skin injury and percutaneous sensitization to peanut allergen. Anaphylaxis from the skin to the small intestine was then investigated by ELISA, RNA sequencing, quantitative real-time PCR, histopatho

Atopic labial pigmentation: a new diagnostic feature in Asian patients with atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Pigmented lesions on the lips can be caused by physiological or pathological factors, along with exogenous or endogenous factors. Many patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) and labial pigmentation are seen in clinical practice. The aim of our study was to further explore the association of labial pigmentation and AD. METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of patients who visited the Department of Dermatology at Kyung Hee Medical Center, Seoul, Korea, from January 1 to December 31, 2016. The study consisted of 178 patients with AD and a control group of 178 age- and sex-

Retrospective analysis of the relationship between infantile seborrheic dermatitis and atopic dermatitis.

A growing number of dermatologists dispute the existence of infantile seborrheic dermatitis (ISD) as an independent clinical entity. Therefore the aim of the present study was to estimate the epidemiologic features of ISD in a defined population of Greek children, assess its course, and identify associations, if any, with other common dermatoses of childhood. Children from the region of Athens who were examined and diagnosed with typical clinical features of ISD between 1997 and 2011 were included in the study. The relevant data were collected retrospectively from their medical records using a

Targeting keratinocyte apoptosis in the treatment of atopic dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Activation and skin-selective homing of T cells and effector functions in the skin represent sequential events in the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis. OBJECTIVE: T cell-mediated keratinocyte apoptosis plays a key pathogenetic role in the formation of eczematous dermatitis. IFN-gamma released from activated T cells upregulates Fas on ke-ratinocytes, which renders them susceptible to apoptosis. The lethal hit is given to keratinocytes by means of Fas ligand expressed on the T-cell surface or released to the inflammatory microenvironment. We sought t

Is atopic dermatitis a predisposing factor for experimental acute irritant contact dermatitis?

Proclivity to acute irritant contact dermatitis has been reviewed by comparing the response in patients with atopic dermatitis to controls. Although several controlled studies demonstrate such a proclivity, others do not, suggesting that the mechanisms involved are complex.

Lack of efficacy of topical cyclosporin A in atopic dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis.

Since oral cyclosporin A (CsA) has demonstrated its effectiveness in psoriasis and atopic dermatitis, efforts have been made to develop a topical CsA formulation, thus avoiding systemic adverse events. A limited number of publications are available on the use of topical CsA in allergic contact dermatitis and atopic dermatitis. Moreover the response rate of humans to topical CsA is about 50% or less. We now report our results with three new topical CsA formulations on allergic contact dermatitis and atopic dermatitis. No significant improvement was found in 16 atopic dermatitis patients and 7 a

Lichen planus-like atopic dermatitis: expanding the differential diagnosis of spongiotic dermatitis.

Spongiotic dermatitis represents a commonly encountered histopathological pattern seen by dermatopathologists. The differential diagnosis of lymphocyte predominant acute spongiotic dermatitis typically entails atopic dermatitis (AD), contact dermatitis, nummular dermatitis, pityriasis rosea and seborrheic dermatitis. Recently, our group has characterized a distinct subtype of spongiotic dermatitis occurring exclusively in heavily pigmented patients. Clinically, lesions of this subtype are nearly indistinguishable from lichen planus. However, the histology is contradistinctive to classic lichen

The Validated Investigator Global Assessment for Atopic Dermatitis (vIGA-AD™): a clinical outcome measure for the severity of atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: The validated Investigator Global Assessment for Atopic Dermatitis (vIGA-AD™) is a standardized severity assessment for use in clinical trials and registries for atopic dermatitis (AD). OBJECTIVES: To investigate the reliability, validity, responsiveness and within-patient meaningful change of the vIGA-AD. METHODS: Data were analysed from adult patients with moderate-to-severe AD in the BREEZE-AD1 (N = 624 patients; NCT03334396), BREEZE-AD2 (N = 615; NCT03334422) and BREEZE-AD5 (N = 440; NCT03435081) phase III baricitinib clinical studies. Topical application of a vitamin D analogue exacerbates atopic dermatitis and induces the atopic dermatitis-like phenotype in Stat6VT mice.

Calcipotriene is a topical vitamin D3 analogue approved for the treatment of plaque and scalp psoriasis. We report the case of a 2-year-old boy whose atopic dermatitis (AD) flared in response to application of calcipotriene 0.005% cream and solution for a mistaken diagnosis of plaque and scalp psoriasis. We investigated whether the patient's eruption was secondary to an allergic contact dermatitis. In the Stat6VT mouse model of AD we tested whether calcipotriene could induce the otherwise-spontaneous AD-like phenotype. Closed patch testing was done on the patient with calcipotriene solution an

Atopic skin diathesis rather than atopic dermatitis is associated with specific contact allergies.

BACKGROUND: The association of atopic dermatitis (AD) and allergic contact dermatitis has been a matter of considerable uncertainty. Study results range from lack of any association to increased sensitization for multiple allergens, but fail to identify consistent allergen associations. OBJECTIVE: We studied a large patch test cohort of patients stratified by their atopic skin diathesis using the Erlangen Atopy Score (EAS), independent of active skin disease. METHODS: Retrospective multi-center data analysis from five departments of dermatology in Germany with 4,509 patients. Patients were g

7 for 11: Updates in pediatric atopic dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common chronic inflammatory skin condition that often emerges in the first few years of life. It is a complex, multifaceted condition that may evolve from infancy to adolescence and requires a comprehensive educational and therapeutic approach. Insights into primary prevention, risk factors for developing AD and allergic comorbidities, the burden of disease, and targeted therapies in the pediatric population are constantly evolving. Awareness of these developments can help guide successful long-term management. This focused review article summarizes a selection of r
