Metabolic abnormalities and body fat redistribution in HIV-1 infected patients: the lipodystrophy syndrome.

A unique and unexpected syndrome consisting of metabolic abnormalities (hyperlipidaemia and insulin resistance) and body fat redistribution (central adiposity and peripheral fat wasting) has been reported with increasing frequency in HIV-1 infected patients, most of whom are receiving highly active antiretroviral therapies including HIV-1 protease inhibitors. This article reviews the clinical and laboratory characteristics, the pathogenesis, and the management of this syndrome.

Glucose ingestion affects cardiac ANS in healthy subjects with different amounts of body fat.

Low-to-high frequency ratio (LF/HF) is an indirect index of sympathovagal balance derived by heart rate spectral analysis. We investigated the effect of glucose ingestion on LF/HF in 17 healthy, normotensive young subjects (9 male, 8 female) with a wide body fat content range (body fat = 29 +/- 5.9%; range = 19-42%) and a normal thyroid hormone status. Before and after an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), the Holter technique and indirect calorimetry allowed us to determine heart rate and substrate oxidation in all subjects. At baseline, LF/HF correlated with body fat (r = 0.60, P < 0.005),

Effects of skin thickness, age, body fat, and sunlight on serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D.

We tested the hypothesis that the age-related decline in skin thickness may contribute to the age-related decline in serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D]. We measured skinfold thickness on the back of the hand, serum 25(OH)D, height, and weight in 433 normal postmenopausal women. We also noted the average daily hours of sunlight in the month in which the observations were made and in the preceding 2 mo. Serum 25(OH)D was positively related to hours of sunlight (with a time lag of 2 mo) and to skin thickness, and negatively to body mass index (wt/ht2). Serum 25(OH)D fell significantly after age

Protective role of Hsian-tsao ethanol extract against body fat, serum lipid profiles, and hepatic lipid profiles in high-fat diet-fed rats.

This study investigated the preventive effects of a 40% ethanol extract of Hsian-tsao (40EEHT) on obesity in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese rats. Male Wistar rats were administered 0, 100, 200, or 500 mg/kg of 40EEHT, resulting in reduced body weight, total body fat, and hepatic tissue weight after 8 weeks. 40EEHT also decreased adipocyte size, improved lipid profiles, alleviated oxidative stress, and enhanced hepatic antioxidant enzyme activities. Additionally, it regulated fatty acid metabolism by reducing lipogenesis and increasing lipolysis and β-oxidation, suggesting its potential as a

Data on body mass, glucose tolerance and bone phenotype of mice with osteogenesis imperfecta on long-term low-fat and high-fat diets.

Male and female mice with a dominant severe bone fragility disorder, osteogenesis imperfecta, and their wild-type littermates (FVB background) were challenged with a long-term (26 weeks) high-fat diet to evaluate the development of obesity and glucose intolerance. Here we present data for the measurements of body mass, the outcome of glucose tolerance tests during the long-term diet, as well as organ weights and bone phenotype at the end of the study. Interpretation of the data and further in-depth analysis can be found in the article "Male but not female mice with severe osteogenesis imperfec

Black tea polyphenols and polysaccharides improve body composition, increase fecal fatty acid, and regulate fat metabolism in high-fat diet-induced obese rats.

With the current changes in diet and living habits, obesity has become a global health problem. Thus, the weight-reducing function of tea has attracted considerable attention. This study investigated the anti-obesity effect and the mechanism of black tea (BT) polyphenols and polysaccharides in male Sprague-Dawley rats. The BT polyphenols and polysaccharides reduced the body weight, Lee's index, visceral fat weight, and fat cell size but improved the biochemical profile and increased the fecal fatty acid content, thereby preventing high-fat diet-induced obesity. A gene expression profile array

Association of body surface area with fat mass, free fat mass and total weight in healthy individuals, and implications for the dosage of cytotoxic drugs.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: In oncology, the dosage of anti-neoplastic drugs is generally adapted to the patient's body surface area (BSA). We investigated the potential differences between BSA and body weight (BW) in estimating the variability in body composition among individuals, especially older adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study population included 322 community-dwelling individuals with different age and sex: 45 adult men (AM, age 18-65 years), 86 older men (OM, age >65 years), 54 adult women (AW, age 18-65 years), and 137 older women (OW, age >65 years). For each participant, we estimated

Body composition and body fat distribution in tissue-specific insulin resistance and in response to a 12-week isocaloric dietary macronutrient intervention.

BACKGROUND: Body composition and body fat distribution are important predictors of cardiometabolic diseases. The etiology of cardiometabolic diseases is heterogenous, and partly driven by inter-individual differences in tissue-specific insulin sensitivity. OBJECTIVES: To investigate (1) the associations between body composition and whole-body, liver and muscle insulin sensitivity, and (2) changes in body composition and insulin sensitivity and their relationship after a 12-week isocaloric diet high in mono-unsaturated fatty acids (HMUFA) or a low-fat, high-protein, high-fiber (LFHP) diet. Neurobeachin, a regulator of synaptic protein targeting, is associated with body fat mass and feeding behavior in mice and body-mass index in humans.

Neurobeachin (Nbea) regulates neuronal membrane protein trafficking and is required for the development and functioning of central and neuromuscular synapses. In homozygous knockout (KO) mice, Nbea deficiency causes perinatal death. Here, we report that heterozygous KO mice haploinsufficient for Nbea have higher body weight due to increased adipose tissue mass. In several feeding paradigms, heterozygous KO mice consumed more food than wild-type (WT) controls, and this consumption was primarily driven by calories rather than palatability. Expression analysis of feeding-related genes in the hypo

The effect of whole-body cryostimulation treatments on the profile of selected adipokines and sirtuins in middle-aged individuals with varying degrees of body fatness.

Whole-body cryostimulation (WBC), a widely utilized intervention involving exposure to extremely low temperatures, elicits a range of physiological responses. Growing evidence suggests that WBC may serve as a complementary, non-pharmacological strategy for obesity management and the modulation of metabolic homeostasis. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of a series of WBC sessions on the profile of selected adipokines, sirtuins, and carbohydrate metabolism in individuals with normal and elevated BMI. A total of 23 volunteers participated in the study: 12 in the study group (SG; B

Setaria viridis Ethanol Extract Attenuates Muscle Loss and Body Fat Reduction in Sarcopenic Obesity by Regulating AMPK in High-Fat Diet-Induced Obese Mice.

Sarcopenic obesity, characterized by the concurrent presence of sarcopenia and obesity, presents a complex challenge due to the synergistic detrimental effects of muscle loss and excess body fat. This study investigated the potential of Setaria viridis (SV) supplementation for mitigating the impact of sarcopenic obesity on diet-induced obese mice. Mice in the study were divided into groups and fed a normal diet, a high-fat diet (HFD), or an HFD supplemented with 0.3% SV ethanol extract. After 16 weeks, SV supplementation significantly reduced body weight gain and white adipose tissue mass, imp

Evaluation of indirect methods for estimating body fat in dogs using electrical bioimpedance and morphometry.

UNLABELLED: Canine obesity causes metabolic issues and reduces quality of life. Assessing adiposity remains challenging due to limited indirect and reference methods. Electrical bioimpedance (BIA) is a proposed tool, but agreement between morphometric and BIA equations, and the body condition score (BCS) role, remains poorly explored in heterogeneous canine populations. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate agreement among indirect methods (BCS, morphometry, BIA) for estimating canine body fat and assess BIA's viability for nutritional evaluation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study included 17

Elevated oxidative stress and steroid insensitivity in patients with asthma and high body fat percentage.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a risk factor for poor asthma control. Previous research suggests that patients with asthma and obesity have reduced responsiveness to corticosteroids. Recent studies indicate that body fat percentage may be more strongly associated with obesity-related diseases compared with body mass index. However, the relationship between body fat percentage and asthma, particularly regarding steroid sensitivity, remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between body fat percentage and steroid sensitivity in patients with asthma and elucidate the potential mechanism
