Milk microbiome in the first month of lactation and at weaning from ewes supplemented with zinc pre- and postpartum.

Mastitis is an important disease with economic and welfare implications in both clinical and subclinical states. The aim of this research was to sequence the hypervariable V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene to describe the microbial diversity and taxonomy of milk from clinically healthy ewes (Rambouillet, WF = 9; Hampshire, BF = 5). Experimental ewes represented a subset of a larger study assessing the impacts of divergent dietary zinc (Zn) concentrations [1 × National Academics of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) recommendations = CON or 3 × NASEM recommendations = ZnTRT] throughout la

Intraduodenal fecal microbiota transplantation ameliorates gut atrophy and cholestasis in a novel parenteral nutrition piglet model.

Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) provides lifesaving nutritional support intravenously; however, it is associated with significant side effects. Given gut microbial alterations noted with TPN, we hypothesized that transferring fecal microbiota from healthy controls would restore gut-systemic signaling in TPN and mitigate injury. Using our novel ambulatory model (US Patent: US 63/136,165), 31 piglets were randomly allocated to enteral nutrition (EN), TPN only, TPN + antibiotics (TPN-A), or TPN + intraduodenal fecal microbiota transplant (TPN + FMT) for 14 days. Gut, liver, and serum were assess

Characteristics of microbiome-derived metabolomics according to the progression of alcoholic liver disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The prevalence and severity of alcoholic liver disease (ALD) are increasing. The incidence of alcohol-related cirrhosis has risen up to 2.5%. This study aimed to identify novel metabolite mechanisms involved in the development of ALD in patients. The use of gut microbiome-derived metabolites is increasing in targeted therapies. Identifying metabolic compounds is challenging due to the complex patterns that have long-term effects on ALD. We investigated the specific metabolite signatures in ALD patients. METHODS: This study included 247 patients (heathy control, HC: n = 62,

Surface-Displayed Amuc_1100 From Akkermansia muciniphila on Lactococcus lactis ZHY1 Improves Hepatic Steatosis and Intestinal Health in High-Fat-Fed Zebrafish.

Fatty liver and intestinal barrier damage were widespread in most farmed fish, which severely restrict the development of aquaculture. Therefore, there was an urgent need to develop green feed additives to maintain host liver and intestinal health. In this study, a probiotic pili-like protein, Amuc_1100 (AM protein), was anchored to the surface of Lactococcus lactis ZHY1, and the effects of the recombinant bacteria AM-ZHY1 on liver fat accumulation and intestinal health were evaluated. Zebrafish were fed a basal diet, high-fat diet, and high-fat diet with AM-ZHY1 (108 cfu/g) or control bacteri

Duodenal microbiota dysbiosis in functional dyspepsia and its potential role of the duodenal microbiota in gut-brain axis interaction: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a common gastrointestinal disorder associated with brain-gut interaction disturbances. In recent years, accumulating evidence points to the duodenum as a key integrator in dyspepsia symptom generation. Investigations into the pathological changes in the duodenum of FD patients have begun to focus on the role of duodenal microbiota dysbiosis. This review summarizes duodenal microbiota changes in FD patients and explores their relationship with gut-brain interaction dysregulation. METHODS: Ten databases, including PubMed, MEDLINE, and the Cochra

Therapeutic efficacy of liraglutide versus metformin in modulating the gut microbiota for treating type 2 diabetes mellitus complicated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Metformin and liraglutide are used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) complicated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Although these drugs can alter the intestinal microbiome, clinical data are required to explore their mechanisms of action. Using 16S sequencing technology, we analyzed and compared the intestinal bacterial community structure and function between patients before and after treatment (12 weeks) with the two drugs (metformin or liraglutide, n = 15) and healthy controls (n = 15). Moreover, combined with 19 clinical indices, the potential therapeutic mec

Genetic and functional analysis of the bovine uterine microbiota. Part I: Metritis versus healthy cows.

Metritis is a uterine disease that affects 10 to 30% of all lactating dairy cows and has detrimental effects on reproductive performance, milk production, and survival. Data regarding the identity and abundance of bacterial genes governing traits such as virulence, antibiotic resistance, and stress responses could enable identification of previously unknown agents that play a role in metritis pathogenesis. Moreover, such knowledge could lead to the development of improved treatments or preventive methods. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to characterize the uterine microbial popula

Evaluation of extended-spectrum β-lactamase producing bacteria in feces of shelter dogs as a biomarker for altered gut microbial taxa and functional profiles.

BACKGROUND: The USA is home to 83-88 million dogs, with 3-7 million living in shelters. Shelter dogs move through the supply chain from their geographical origin to adoptive homes, with possible exposure to pathogens and shift in their gut microbiota. However, research in this area is limited. This study examined the effects of intestinal colonization by ESBL bacteria on gut taxa abundance, diversity, and functions in 52 shelter dogs of various ages, sexes, and fertility statuses. METHODOLOGY: We isolated fecal DNA, sequenced their 16S, processed the sequences using DADA2, identified taxa pro

Improving Characterization of Understudied Human Microbiomes Using Targeted Phylogenetics.

Whole-genome bacterial sequences are required to better understand microbial functions, niche-specific bacterial metabolism, and disease states. Although genomic sequences are available for many of the human-associated bacteria from commonly tested body habitats (e.g., feces), as few as 13% of bacterium-derived reads from other sites such as the skin map to known bacterial genomes. To facilitate a better characterization of metagenomic shotgun reads from underrepresented body sites, we collected over 10,000 bacterial isolates originating from 14 human body habitats, identified novel taxonomic

Oral microbiota populations of adult dogs consuming wet or dry foods.

Oral microbiota play a prominent role in canine periodontal disease and wet foods are often blamed for poor oral health, but canine oral microbial communities have been poorly studied. We aimed to determine differences in oral health measures, breath odor, and oral microbiota populations of dogs fed wet or dry food. Twelve adult dogs fed either a commercial dry (extruded) or commercial wet (canned) food for 6 wk were studied. Breath samples were measured for sulfur compounds, teeth were scored for plaque, calculus, and gingivitis by a blinded veterinary dentist, salivary pH was measured, and s
