Comparison of apparent and three-dimensional pupillary diameter measurements in cataract patients and their impact on multifocal intraocular lens selection.

The pupillary diameter (PD) clinically observed and measured by conventional devices represents a apparent PD of the anatomical pupil projected onto the corneal plane, yet the relationship between this apparent PD and three-dimensional PD (3D PD) in cataract patients remains unclear. This prospective cross-sectional observational study aimed to investigate the relationship between apparent PD and 3D PD in cataract patients and its clinical impact on multifocal intraocular lens (MIOL) selection. This study included 114 eyes from 72 cataract patients. Apparent PD and 3D PD were measured using Pe

[Refractive lens extraction with trifocal intraocular lens implantation in high myopia and myopic astigmatism].

UNLABELLED: In modern cataract surgery, the ophthalmologist aims not only to remove the lens but also to optimize the patient's refractive status. Refractive lens exchange allows correction of presbyopia and reduces spectacle dependence, particularly in patients with high myopia who are not suitable candidates for corneal procedures. OBJECTIVE: The study evaluated the postoperative outcomes of trifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) implantation for correction of high myopia and myopic astigmatism. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective study, conducted at the Eye Microsurgery Ophthalmological

Intraocular lens use in challenging pediatric cases.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The technological advancement of intraocular lenses (IOLs) in recent years has increased their use in the pediatric population. This has led to the use of IOLs in children in whom they would not have been considered in the past. Yet, the majority of the literature looking at the use of specialty IOLs is in the adult literature. This review will look at the use of IOLs in special circumstances as reported in the pediatric population. RECENT FINDINGS: A Medline search of the use of IOLs in children reveals 27 articles published in the past year. The data available on the use

Interventions to slow progression of myopia in children.

BACKGROUND: Nearsightedness (myopia) causes blurry vision when looking at distant objects. Highly nearsighted people are at greater risk of several vision-threatening problems such as retinal detachments, choroidal atrophy, cataracts and glaucoma. Interventions that have been explored to slow the progression of myopia include bifocal spectacles, cycloplegic drops, intraocular pressure-lowering drugs, muscarinic receptor antagonists and contact lenses. The purpose of this review was to systematically assess the effectiveness of strategies to control progression of myopia in children. OBJECTIVE

Visual simulation of intraocular lenses: technologies and applications [Invited].

Cataract surgery requires selecting an intraocular lens (IOL), whose design affects visual outcomes. Traditional IOL evaluation relies on optical models and bench testing, but these methods fall short in simulating perceptual factors crucial to patient experience. Visual simulators, based on different principles including adaptive optics, temporal multiplexing or physical projection of the IOLs, now allow patients and clinicians to preview and compare different IOL designs preoperatively. By simulating real-world interactions of the eye's optics and the visual system with IOLs, these simulator
