Occupational Dental Noise and Early Cochlear Changes: Evidence from Distortion Product Oto-Acoustic Emissions in Young Dentists.

Background: Dental professionals are routinely exposed to occupational noise from high-speed handpieces and ultrasonic scalers, with levels that can reach up to 90 dB(A). While such exposure is suspected to affect cochlear function, objective assessments in this population remain limited. This study investigated short-term changes in distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) as a biomarker of outer hair cell (OHC) function following routine clinical dental procedures. Methods: DPOAEs were recorded at frequencies from 1000 to 6000 Hz in young dental professionals with clinically normal

Toxicology testing in fatally injured workers: a review of five years of Iowa FACE cases.

Toxicology testing of fatally injured workers is not routinely conducted. We completed a case-series study of 2005-2009 occupational fatalities captured by Iowa's Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation (FACE) Program. The goals of our research were to: (1) measure the proportion of FACE cases that undergo toxicology testing, and describe the factors associated with being tested, and (2) measure the rate of positive toxicology tests, the substances identified and the demographics and occupations of victims who tested positive. Case documents and toxicology laboratory reports were reviewed.

[Caplan's syndrome - rare pneumoconioses in clinical practice: case report].

Pneumoconioses are among the most frequently diagnosed occupational diseases in Poland, with collagenous pneumoconiosis forming a significant subgroup. These diseases develop as a result of exposure to fibrogenic dusts. One of the rare forms of such conditions is Caplan's syndrome - a rheumatoid type of pneumoconiosis characterized by the coexistence of pulmonary nodular lesions and rheumatoid arthritis. This condition is rarely diagnosed, most commonly among individuals occupationally exposed to silicate dust, such as coal miners. This article presents a case of a men with Caplan's syndrome q

Risk of Occupational Latent Tuberculosis Infection among Health Personnel Measured by Interferon-Gamma Release Assays in Low Incidence Countries-A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Healthcare workers (HCWs) have increased risk for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) and tuberculosis (TB) disease due to their occupational exposure. For some years now, interferon-γ release assays (IGRAs) have replaced the tuberculin skin test for the diagnosis of LTBI in many countries. This review examined the occupational risk of LTBI in HCWs with IGRA testing in low incidence countries. A systematic review and meta-analysis of studies from 2005 onwards provide data regarding the prevalence of LTBI in HCWs. In addition, the pooled effect estimates were calculated for individual regions

Maternal occupational exposures and fetal growth in a Spanish birth cohort.

While the epidemiologic literature suggests certain maternal occupational exposures may be associated with reduced measures of size at birth, the occupational literature employing fetal biometry data to assess fetal growth is sparse. The present study examines associations between maternal occupational exposures and ultrasound-measured fetal growth. We included 1,739 singleton pregnancies from the INfancia y Medio Ambiente (INMA) project (2003-2008). At 32 weeks of pregnancy, interviewers ascertained mothers' employment status and assessed job-related physical loads, work schedules, and job st
