The methanol extract of Leptospira interrogans serovar canicola was purified by precipitation with acetone or acetone and chloroform. The antigenicity of the antigen was not altered by heating or treatment with pepsin and pronase. However the antigenicity was lost when the antigen was treated with periodic acid. Chemical analysis revealed the presence of 40% carbohydrate (22% methylpentose, 28% hexoses), 4% protein, 20% lipid and 2.7% phosphate. The complement fixation test with sera from patients with leptospirosis agreed with the microscopic agglutination reaction.

An adult male owl monkey (Aotus nancymai) had hypercalcemia associated with a disseminated case of histoplasmosis (Histoplasma capsulatum var. capsulatum). A search for microcalculi was made in 14 cases of chronic submandibular sialadenitis. Microcalculi were found in all cases. They were within serous acinar cells and ductal cells, within lumina, and interstitially. They were stained variably by periodic-acid/Schiff and Alcian Blue at pH 2.5. Ultrastructural analytical examination showed them to consist of crystals containing calcium and phosphorus. The observations support the possibility that microcalculi form in autophagosomes, enter lumina and occasionally become impacted to produce sialolithiasis and sialadenitis.

Two unusual ovarian tumours thought to be of Wolffian identity, one of them malignant, are described. They showed packed combinations of adenopapillary, tubular, trabecular and diffuse patterns, a sharp and generalised periodic acid-Schiff (PAS)-positive basement membrane and areas of elastic network. A review of published Wolffian tumours at various sites suggests that the prototypes of the two tumours occur chiefly in the cervix and broad ligament. The significance of Wolffian tumours and their differentiation from arrhenoblastoma and serous tumours is discussed.

The lymphocyte glycogen content has been measured semi-quantitatively by staining peripheral blood films by the periodic-acid-Schiff (P.A.S.) technique. The high values reported in chronic lymphatic leukaemia, lymphosarcoma, Hodgkin's disease, and infectious mononucleosis have been confirmed. High values have also been found in cases with chronic suppuration, ulcerative colitis, myelomatosis, and epithelial malignancies. Our results suggest that a high lymphocyte glycogen content may be produced by several different mechanisms and that the test is of little value in differential diagnosis.

Authors report a rare case of granular acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in a 45-year-old woman with a history of multiple myeloma. The patient's lymphoblasts contained large numbers of distinctive cytoplasmic granules closely mimicking heavily granulated myeloblasts in acute myeloid leukemia. OBJECTIVE: To report an unusual case of intravitreal inflammation in a human eye caused by the presence of residual perfluorodecalin in a case of giant retinal tear and retinal detachment.
METHODS: The posterior capsule of the lens, which was infiltrated with deposits, was collected during surgery. The specimen was stained with hematoxylin and eosin, with periodic acid-Schiff, and for melanin. Part of it was examined with electron microscopy. The amino acid sequence of the sodium channel alpha subunit from adult human skeletal muscle has been deduced by cross-species PCR-mediated cloning and sequencing of the cDNA. The protein consists of 1836 amino acid residues. FITC-labeled cholera toxin subunit B (CTB) stained the surfaces of cells of mucous acini in the submandibular gland. CTB, also called choleragenoid, binds to the GM1 glycolipid in the cell membrane.
