BACKGROUND: More than 95% of higher-order multiples are born preterm and more than 90% are low birth weight, making this group of infants especially vulnerable to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Emerging evidence suggests that families with twins face challenges adhering to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommendations to reduce SIDS risks. Adherence to the AAP recommendations in families with higher-order multiples has not been described.
PURPOSE: This study describes SIDS risk reduction infant care practices for higher-order multiples during the first year of life.

OBJECTIVES: The absence of nasal bone (NB) has been noted in trisomy 21 fetuses at first-trimester ultrasound, in high-risk pregnancies. In this study, the nasal bone was evaluated in relation to fetal karyotype, in unselected pregnancies.
METHODS: From September 2001 to September 2002, the fetal facial profile was examined at the 11 to 14 weeks' scan for screening by nuchal translucency (NT). Attempts have been made to identify factors influencing the sex ratio at birth (number of males per 100 females). Statistical analyses have shown that comparisons between sex ratios demand large data sets. The secondary sex ratio has been believed to vary inversely with the frequency of prenatal losses. OBJECTIVE: This retrospective study aims to verify the factors for the development of maternal pulmonary edema in higher order multifetal pregnancy.
STUDY DESIGN: We analyzed medical profiles of a total of 13 triplet, quadruplet and quintuplet pregnancies for the years 1992 through 1997. Some treatments were applied in attempts to promote these multifetal pregnancies. All underwent cesarean section, two of which developed pulmonary edema within a few hours of delivery.
