Community health worker denominations: a global review through the case of French Guiana.

Across more than 60 countries, individuals who bridge the gap between communities and formal health systems are designated by a wide array of terms-community health workers, promotores de salud, agentes comunitários de saúde, health mediators, and many others. This proliferation of denominations is often treated as a reflection of contextual diversity. This review argues that it also reveals a deeper structural reality: the incomplete institutionalisation of a workforce that is nonetheless essential to health systems worldwide. Drawing on a comparative analysis of over 60 denominations across

Dividends and Disconnects: Involving Public and Stakeholder Groups in the Development of a Modelling Study Exploring Income Policy and Health.

BACKGROUND: Policy models increasingly guide policy decision-making. Incorporating public and stakeholder perspectives into modelling processes can produce evidence that is more relevant, appropriate and acceptable to the public. However, public and stakeholder involvement (PSI) in modelling studies is an emerging practice in the field of health inequalities, with little guidance available to support researchers. OBJECTIVE: We present a methodological reflection on a PSI process supporting development of a policy model estimating the health impacts of major income supplementation policies. We

Pharmacist-led screening in sexually transmitted infections: current perspectives.

INTRODUCTION: Sexually transmitted infection (STI) screening is a crucial initiative that aims to reduce the increasing global prevalence of many common STIs such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and herpes simplex virus (HSV). Many STIs are either asymptomatic or show mild symptoms that are often attributed to other infections; hence, screening is the only way to identify - and by extension, treat - them. In this way, the spread of STIs can be reduced, and the health implications of an untreated STI are minimized. Community pharmacies could provide an avenue to convenient, confidential STI screening

Why donors intend to return: Motivation, satisfaction and post-donation intention in a high-demand tertiary hospital setting in Lagos, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Maintaining safe and adequate blood supply in low- and middle-income countries requires understanding factors influencing donor return intentions. Nigeria faces chronic blood shortages, yet evidence on determinants of return intention among blood donors in tertiary hospitals remains limited. This study assessed donor motivation, satisfaction and intention to return among blood donors at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and identified factors independently associated with post-donation intention. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was

Hospital-to-hospice transfers in Germany: analyzing the impact of age and gender at the care transition interface.

BACKGROUND: Hospice care models vary worldwide due to differences in healthcare systems, cultural attitudes, and resource availability. In Germany, inpatient hospice care plays a vital role in the treatment of critically ill patients, providing inpatient end-of-life care if home care is not possible. The transition between different care settings is a critical interface. This study analyzes aggregated 2023 hospital data to assess the frequency and characteristics of direct transfers from hospitals to inpatient hospices and evaluates the impact of regional infrastructure on these transitions.

Feasibility of a conversation-based brief intervention in general practice to reduce post-traumatic symptoms after intensive care treatment-A qualitative analysis of the PICTURE study.

There is currently a gap in the follow-up care of patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after intensive care. Long-term care is mainly provided within the setting of general practice. A conversation-based brief intervention carried out by general practitioners improved the symptoms of mild to moderate post-traumatic stress disorder sustainably. The aim of this study is to assess the subjective effectiveness and feasibility of short-term, primary care-based narrative exposure intervention from the perspective of participating general practitioners. Process-accompanying follow-up c

[Delegating clinical tasks to medical practice assistants: Qualitative analysis of experiences from the DELIVER CARE study].

BACKGROUND: The primary objective of the DELIVER-CARE study was to evaluate a generic model for the delegation of clinical tasks to medical practice assistants (MPAs) in the outpatient treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases in the form of an MPA consultation. In addition to proving that the model is not inferior to standard care, permanent implementation also requires a positive evaluation by those involved and knowledge of the barriers and success factors. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the perspectives of those involved from the specialist fields of rheumatology, gas

A qualitative study of community perceptions and practices relating to blood donation in Cameroon.

INTRODUCTION: Blood and blood products are essential for patients in need of transfusion therapy, especially those undergoing surgical procedures, childbirth and other injuries. In Cameroon, there is an annual deficit of over 270 000 pints of blood, with a coverage rate of only 17%. This qualitative study investigates the barriers and motivators to blood donation among Cameroonian adults, with the aim of better understanding community perceptions and practices. METHODS: This ethnographic study was performed using a purposive sampling strategy. Focus group discussions and in-depth interviews w

[Potentially avoidable visits to the physician's office: an exploratory observational study].

BACKGROUND: In order to harmonize supply and demand in the outpatient sector, current figures are needed on the number of visits to physicians' offices and their rationale. Since the introduction of partially flat-rate remuneration in the outpatient sector in 2008, only uncertain estimates are possible on the basis of billing data. OBJECTIVE: On the basis of direct observation in physicians' offices, the number and reasons for visits to the physician's office are to be recorded and their potential avoidability estimated. METHODS: In 11 GP practices (4 practices), general specialist practices

Determinants of the implementation of artificial intelligence-based screening for diabetic retinopathy-a cross-sectional study with general practitioners in Germany.

OBJECTIVE: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) may lead to irreversible damage to the eye and cause blindness if diagnosed in its advanced stages. Artificial intelligence (AI) may support screening and contribute to a timely diagnosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate factors that might influence the success of implementing AI-supported devices for DR screenings in general practice. METHODS: A questionnaire with modules on attitudes toward digital solutions, technical factors, perceived patient perspectives, and sociodemographic data was constructed and 2100 general practitioners (GPs) in Germany

Prevalence and causes of blood donor deferrals among clients presenting for blood donation in northern Tanzania.

INTRODUCTION: Blood is an important requirement in different medical and surgical conditions with half of all donations are from developing countries. Lack of eligibility among blood donors who present for blood transfusion, called blood donor deferral is associated with the unsustainable and inadequate amount of blood collected by blood banks worldwide. However, the prevalence and causes of blood donor deferrals are not well known in Tanzania where less than one-third of actual needs of blood is collected, leading to unmet demand of blood for transfusion, and causing unwanted morbidity and mo

First study on domestic dog ecology, demographic structure and dynamics in Bamako, Mali.

BACKGROUND: For the planning of an effective dog mass vaccination campaign against rabies in Africa, it is crucial to know more about the dog population. In this paper we describe for the first time the dog ecology, demographic structure and population dynamics of a domestic dog population in Bamako, Mali. In 2010 and 2011, we visited 2956 randomly selected compounds. Questionnaire data was collected on the compound and household level and on each dog individually. Dog-owning households were followed every six months during one (dog-owning households identified in 2011) or two years (dog-ownin

A mixed methods approach to evaluating community drug distributor performance in the control of neglected tropical diseases.

BACKGROUND: Trusted literate, or semi-literate, community drug distributors (CDDs) are the primary implementers in integrated preventive chemotherapy (IPC) programmes for Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD) control. The CDDs are responsible for safely distributing drugs and for galvanising communities to repeatedly, often over many years, receive annual treatment, create and update treatment registers, monitor for side-effects and compile treatment coverage reports. These individuals are 'volunteers' for the programmes and do not receive remuneration for their annual work commitment. METHODS: A

A systematic review and meta-analysis of job motivation and associated factors among health workers in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Low job motivation among healthcare workers is a significant issue in the healthcare system, particularly in low-income countries such as Ethiopia, where health professionals face low remuneration, inadequate benefits, and poor working conditions. Shortage of motivated health workers has a significantly negative impact on the quality of healthcare services. In Ethiopia, there is no representative or summarized data on the level of motivation among health workers. We synthesized the pooled level of job motivation and its determinants among Ethiopian health workers. METHODS: A compr
