Comparison of respiratory symptoms and pulmonary functions of adult male cigarette smokers and non-smokers in Sri Lanka; A comparative analytical study.

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking has long been associated with decreased lung function and increased respiratory symptoms globally. While this relationship is well-established, a critical gap exists in our understanding of the specific impact of smoking intensity on individual lung volumes, particularly among the general population. Despite numerous studies conducted on this topic worldwide, there is a noticeable absence of research focusing on the Sri Lankan population, and South Asian studies in this context remain sparse. This study evaluated the prevalence of respiratory symptoms and pulmonar

Profiles of tobacco smokers and ex-smokers in a large-scale random sample survey across Wales: an unsupervised machine-learning cluster analysis.

BACKGROUND: The Welsh government recently set a target to be smoke-free by 2030, which means reducing the prevalence of tobacco smoking in adults to 5% by then. The goal is to improve health and population life expectancy. To support this strategy, we identified profile groups with different sets of socioeconomic and demographic characteristics within the population of smokers. We compared these profiles to those identified in the ex-smoker population to provide a broader understanding of smokers and inform targeting of interventions and policy. METHODS: We did a cross-sectional study using d

Quitline Treatment Enrollment and Cessation Outcomes Among Smokers Linked With Treatment via Ask-Advise-Connect: Comparisons Among Smokers With and Without HIV.

INTRODUCTION: Given that people living with HIV (PLWH) are disproportionately burdened by tobacco-related morbidity and mortality, it is critically important to understand the degree to which evidence-based cessation interventions are utilized by and are effective among PLWH. AIMS AND METHODS: This secondary data analysis aimed to examine differences in Quitline treatment enrollment and 6-month cessation outcomes among smokers seeking care at 1 HIV clinic and 12 non-HIV clinics that were part of a large healthcare system in the greater Houston, Texas metropolitan area, United States. Data wer

Differences between nicotine-abstinent smokers and non-smokers in terms of visuospatial attention and inhibition before and after single-blind nicotine administration.

The cholinergic system is implicated in visuospatial attention and inhibition, however the exact role is still unclear. Two key mechanisms in visuospatial attention are bias and disengagement. Bias refers to neuronal signals that enhance the sensitivity of the sensory cortex, disengagement is the decoupling of attention. Previous studies suggest that nicotine affects disengagement and (related) inhibition. However the exact relation is still unknown. Furthermore, nicotine-abstinence in 'Работает' smokers may resemble some anomalies of visuospatial attention and inhibition as seen in Attention D

Do high rates of cigarette consumption increase delay discounting? A cross-sectional comparison of adolescent smokers and young-adult smokers and nonsmokers.

The present report attempts to help clarify the causal or consequent relation between frequently reported high rates of delay discounting (DD) associated with cigarette-smoking status in adults. Delay-discount functions of adolescent smokers and young-adult smokers and nonsmokers from two earlier studies [Reynolds, B., Karraker, K., Horn, K., Richards, J.B., 2003. Delay and probability discounting as related to different stages of adolescent smoking and non-smoking. Behav. Process. 64, 333-344; Reynolds, B., Richards, J.B., Horn, K., Karraker, K., 2004. Impact of Education on COPD Severity and All-Cause Mortality in Lifetime Never-Smokers and Longtime Ex-Smokers: Results of the COSYCONET Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Beyond smoking, several risk factors for the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have been described, among which socioeconomic status including education is of particular interest. We studied the contribution of education to lung function and symptoms relative to smoking in a group of never-smokers with COPD compared to a group of long-time ex-smokers with COPD. METHODS: We used baseline data of the COSYCONET cohort, including patients of GOLD grades 1-4 who were either never-smokers (n=150, age 68.5y, 53.3% female) or ex-smokers (≥10 packyears) for at lea

Comparative Analysis of Culture and Sputum Smear Conversion Timelines and Their Associated Factors in Smokers Versus Non-smokers With Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis.

Background Drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) is a global health challenge, with smoking potentially affecting treatment outcomes. Smoking compromises immune function and may interfere with the pharmacokinetics of anti-TB drugs. Delayed sputum smear and culture conversion are key indicators of prolonged treatment and infectiousness. This study explores the impact of smoking on these conversion timelines in DR-TB patients. Objective To identify and assess the overall treatment outcomes and the factors associated with delayed culture and sputum smear conversion in smokers compared to non-smoker

The effect of a supragingival plaque-control regimen on the subgingival microbiota in smokers and never-smokers: evaluation by real-time polymerase chain reaction.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of strict supragingival plaque control on the subgingival microbiota in smokers and never-smokers. Research into the impact of supragingival plaque control on the number of subgingival bacteria has resulted in contradictory findings. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has been suggested as a valid alternative to current microbiologic methods based on bacteria cultures. METHODS: Forty-five subjects with chronic periodontitis were selected. Twenty-four of them had never smoked, and 21 were active smokers. Four sites per

Results from two pharmacotherapy trials show alcoholic smokers were more severely alcohol dependent but less prone to relapse than alcoholic non-smokers.

AIMS: To assess the role of smoking on treatment outcome in quitting alcoholics on the background of the priming or coping hypothesis (Rohsenow et al., 1997). METHODS: Data sets of placebo treated patients of the German phase III trial of naltrexone (Gastpar et al., 2002) and of acamprosate treated patients of a German phase IV trial Soyka et al., 2002) were reanalyzed. Differences between smoking and non-smoking alcoholics were evaluated using chi(2)-, t- or ANOVA-tests, relapse rates using survival techniques with Cox regression. RESULTS: Smoking alcoholics differed significantly from non-

Inflammatory Biomarkers in Smokers: Implications for Ligamentum Flavum Hypertrophy.

BACKGROUND Ligamentum flavum (LF) hypertrophy is a key contributor to spinal pathologies such as lumbar and cervical disc herniations and spinal stenosis. Smoking, as a modifiable lifestyle factor, is implicated in systemic inflammation and oxidative stress, potentially exacerbating LF hypertrophy. This study aimed to compare the expression of alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) in the lumbar ligamentum flavum from 27 smokers and 31 non-smokers. MATERIAL AND METHODS LF tissue samples were collected during

Lung Cancer Risk Prediction Models for Asian Ever-Smokers.

INTRODUCTION: Although lung cancer prediction models are widely used to support risk-based screening, their performance outside Western populations remains uncertain. This study aims to evaluate the performance of 11 existing risk prediction models in multiple Asian populations and to refit prediction models for Asians. METHODS: In a pooled analysis of 186,458 Asian ever-smokers from 19 prospective cohorts, we assessed calibration (expected-to-observed ratio) and discrimination (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve [AUC]) for each model. In addition, we developed the "Shangh

Weighing cessation: Rising adiposity of current smokers in NHANES.

BACKGROUND: Rising rates of obesity may have interacting effects with smoking given associated cardiovascular risks and cessation-associated weight gain. This study aimed to assess the change in body mass index (BMI) magnitude and prevalence of obesity and central adiposity over time among current smokers and to compare with that of former and never smokers to describe how the obesity and tobacco epidemics interrelate. METHODS: Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1976-2018, survey-weighted, internally standardized analyses were used to look at outcome

Anxiety sensitivity and reasons for smoking among Black smokers.

Black smokers demonstrate higher nicotine dependence and experience higher rates of smoking-related diseases and mortality relative to European American/White smokers. A potential factor relevant to race-specific smoking health disparities may be smoking motives (i.e., motivational basis of smoking). Yet, little research has been conducted to understand psychological factors that may be associated with specific smoking motives among Black smokers. To address this gap in the literature, the current study explored the association between anxiety sensitivity and smoking motives within a subset sa
