Processing speech amongst noise requires sensory and cognitive abilities that are often affected by Huntington's Disease. However, their impact on daily communication remains unclear. We examined the effects of Huntington's Disease on speech-in-noise processing using everyday sentences and words in noise contexts and conditions that mimic different daily life scenarios. In Premanifest (n = 16) and Manifest Huntington's Disease (n = 12) and Control (n = 26) participants, we examined speech discrimination amongst non-demanding and attentionally demanding noise. We also examined how Huntington's

This paper presents a 1024-channel ultra-low-power spike sorting chip featuring event-driven spike detection and spatial clustering for large-scale neural recording. To address power and scalability constraints in brain-computer interfaces, the design integrates a compressive ADC with a two-stage spike detector that significantly reduces memory and processing activity. Spatial features derived from high-density microelectrode array (MEA) enhance cluster separability, enabling robust performance even under neural signal distortion or probe drift, particularly when recordings are obtained using

OBJECTIVE: We examined whether visuospatial deficits in Parkinson disease (PD) can be explained by a domain-general, nonspatial impairment in the sequencing or serial chaining of mental operations.
BACKGROUND: PD has been shown to be associated with impaired visuospatial processing, but the mechanisms of this impairment remain unclear.
METHODS: Thirteen patients with PD and 20 age-matched, neurologically normal controls performed a visuospatial grid navigation task requiring sequential spatial transformations. The participants also performed a control task of serial number subtraction design

Time-space synesthesia is a variant of sequence-space synesthesia and involves the involuntary association of months of the year with 2D and 3D spatial forms, such as arcs, circles, and ellipses. Previous studies have revealed conflicting results regarding the association between time-space synesthesia and enhanced spatial processing ability. Here, we tested 15 time-space synesthetes, and 15 non-synesthetic controls matched for age, education, and gender on standard tests of mental rotation ability, spatial working memory, and verbal working memory. Synesthetes performed better than controls o

BACKGROUND: Developmental topographical disorientation (DTD)-like navigational difficulties can impair everyday orientation and spatial information processing.
OBJECTIVE: We examined whether 8-week virtual reality (VR) orienteering training improves performance on a laboratory spatial memory task in college students with operationally defined DTD-like navigational difficulties and examined task-related cortical changes.
METHODS: In a randomized controlled trial, 96 students were assigned to VR orienteering, VR exercise, or control groups (n = 32/group). The exercise groups trained twice week

This study aims to examine mental rotation performance in children aged 5-15 years across varying rotational angles, and to elucidate the cognitive processing mechanisms and individual differences involved by integrating behavioral data, eye-movement metrics, and self-control capacity. Forty-one children participated in a mental rotation task featuring stimulus orientations of 60°, 120°, 180°, 240°, and 300°. Outcome measures included accuracy, reaction time, fixation duration, fixation count, and mean pupil diameter, complemented by assessments from the Multidimensional Self-Control Scale. Da

Brain is a hierarchical information processing system, in which the feedback signals from high-level to low-level regions are critical. The feedback signals may convey complex high-order features (e.g. category, identity) and simple low-order features (e.g. orientation, spatial frequency) to sensory cortex to interact with the feedforward information, but how these types of feedback information are represented and how they differ in facilitating visual processing remains unclear. The current study used the peripheral object discrimination task, 7T fMRI, and MEG to isolate feedback from feedfor

OBJECTIVE: Previous research suggests that ecstasy users are impaired in processing visuospatial information. However, for the most part, the deficits observed appear to involve the recall and recognition of complex visual and geometric patterns. The present research sought to determine whether ecstasy use was associated with deficits in serial spatial recall and visuospatial working memory (VSWM).
METHODS: Thirty-eight current ecstasy/polydrug users, 16 previous ecstasy/polydrug users and 52 non ecstasy users completed serial simple spatial recall and VSWM tasks.
RESULTS: Both the current a

Psychopathy is traditionally linked to higher-level cognitive processes, but its impact on low-level cognitive functions has remained largely unexplored. This study investigates the relationship between the fundamental cognitive function of physical distance estimation and our social predisposition towards others, as captured by psychopathic traits, grouped into the three facets of Fearless Dominance, Self-Centered Impulsivity and Coldheartedness. Using an innovative experimental design, participants estimated the distance of an approaching avatar agent. We demonstrate that social processing,

Where and under what conditions do spatial and numerical skills converge and diverge in the brain? To address this question, we conducted a meta-analysis of brain regions associated with basic symbolic number processing, arithmetic, and mental rotation. We used Activation Likelihood Estimation (ALE) to construct quantitative meta-analytic maps synthesizing results from 83 neuroimaging papers (24-31 studies/cognitive process). All three cognitive processes were found to activate bilateral parietal regions in and around the intraparietal sulcus (IPS); a finding consistent with shared processing

Contradictory results are found in the literature concerning the role of vision in the perception of space or in spatial navigation, in part because of the lack of murine models of total blindness used so far. The authors evaluated the spatial abilities of anophthalmic transgenic mice. These mice did not differ qualitatively from their wild-type littermates in general locomotor activity, spontaneous alternation, object exploration, or anxiety, but their level of exploratory activity was generally lower. In the spatial version of the water maze, they displayed persistent thigmotaxic behavior an

Depending on our goals, we pay attention to the global shape of an object or to the local shape of its parts, since it's difficult to do both at once. This typically effortless process can be impaired in disease. However, it is not clear which cortical regions carry the information needed to constrain shape processing to a chosen global/local level. Here, novel stimuli were used to dissociate functional MRI responses to global and local shapes. This allowed identification of cortical regions containing information about level (independent from shape). Crucially, these regions overlapped part o

The temporal order judgment (TOJ) task has been widely used to investigate spatial attentional bias and the sensitivity of temporal discrimination during the processing of bilateral tactile information. Previous studies have shown that TOJ is impaired in patients who are suffering from chronic pain, stroke, and Parkinson's disease. In addition, studies have indicated that the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is involved in the TOJ task. However, the neural basis of the TOJ task has not been fully elucidated. To investigate the causal relationship between cortical oscillation and certain behavio

Within the last decade several genes have been identified as candidate risk genes for developmental dyslexia. Recent research using animal models and embryonic RNA interference (RNAi) has shown that a subset of the candidate dyslexia risk genes--DYX1C1, ROBO1, DCDC2, KIAA0319--regulate critical parameters of neocortical development, such as neuronal migration. For example, embryonic disruption of the rodent homolog of DYX1C1 disrupts neuronal migration and produces deficits in rapid auditory processing (RAP) and working memory--phenotypes that have been reported to be associated with developme

BACKGROUND: Recently, cognitive assessments of patients with Fabry disease highlighted neurocognitive impairment using test batteries that are time and labor intensive.
OBJECTIVES: To introduce a user-friendly self-administered tool for cognitive testing in patients with Fabry disease.
METHODS: We used a computerized system requiring about 1 hour for patient follow-up. All patients with enzymatic and/ or molecular diagnosis of Fabry disease seen in our clinic underwent assessment with the Fabry-specific Mainz Severity Score Index (MSSI) with subscores (neurological, renal, cardiac, and gener

OBJECTIVES: The primary goal of this study was to describe relationships between peripheral and central electrophysiologic measures of auditory processing within individual cochlear implant (CI) users. The distinctiveness of neural excitation patterns resulting from the stimulation of different electrodes, referred to as 'spatial selectivity,' was evaluated. The hypothesis was that if central representations of spatial interactions differed across participants semi-independently of peripheral input, then the within-subject relationships between peripheral and central electrophysiologic measure

In ERP studies of cognitive processes during attentional tasks, the cue signals containing information about the target can increase the amplitude of the parietal cue P3 in relation to the 'neutral' temporal cue, and reduce the subsequent target P3 when this information is valid, i.e. corresponds to the target's attributes. The present study compared the cue-to-target P3 ratios in neutral and visuospatial cueing, in order to estimate the contribution of valid visuospatial information from the cue to target stages of the task performance, in terms of cognitive load. The P3 characteristics were

Lesions of the extrastriate cerebral cortex result in disorders of vision, which reveal two cortical processing streams extending ventrally and dorsally from the primary visual cortex. Current theories emphasize the visual perceptual and visuomotor specialization of the ventral and dorsal streams, respectively. Recent investigations of hemi-spatial neglect suggest that the inferior parietal region may lie at the junction of the visual and motor processing pathways.

In Turner syndrome, there is a high incidence of neuro-cognitive impairment specific to the mental processing and sequencing of rotational transformations of shapes in the spatial dimensions of left-right, up-down, and back-front. In Klinefelter syndrome, the corresponding neuro-cognitive impairment is specific to the mental processing of sequence and synchrony in the temporal dimension, including the temporal dimension of language.
