The effect of per and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) exposure on gestational diabetes mellitus and its subclinical risk factors: A systematic review and meta-analysis protocol.

BACKGROUND: Multiple lines of evidence suggest that exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) may alter glucose homeostasis, particularly during pregnancy, and may affect risk for developing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). While previous systematic reviews have been conducted on this topic, they did not assess internal validity of the included studies and their search strategies were narrowly focused. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to assess the effect of higher PFAS exposure (defined by individual compounds or mixtures measured before or during pregnancy) on GDM

Cultural Adaptation and Implementation Strategy of a Recovery-Oriented Mental Health Training Intervention (REFOCUS-THAIREC) for Healthcare Workers in Thailand: An Experience-Based Co-Design.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers are key in supporting mental health recovery, though the approach is poorly understood in many Asian countries. In Thailand, no recovery-oriented training currently exists, highlighting the need for a culturally adapted intervention that incorporates locally meaningful concepts and clarifies unfamiliar recovery principles. The present study aimed to culturally adapt an existing recovery training intervention (REFOCUS/REFOCUS-PULSAR) for use by healthcare workers in Thailand (REFOCUS-THAIREC). METHODS: Experience-Based Co-Design (EBCD) was used to culturally adap

Evaluating the use of the consolidated framework for implementation research in primary care settings: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Previous systematic reviews have examined the use of the 2009 version of the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) in healthcare settings. However, these reviews primarily focused on studies conducted in secondary and tertiary care, with limited attention to its application in primary care. The use of the CFIR in primary care remains underexplored. Given the unique attributes of primary care-guiding principles such as first-contact care, continuity, comprehensiveness, coordination, and people-centeredness-findings from studies in other healthcare settings may no

Testing the Link Between Empathy and Lay Theories of Happiness.

Happiness is a topic that ignites both considerable interest and considerable disagreement. Thus far, however, there has been little attempt to characterize people's lay theories about happiness or explore their consequences. We examined whether individual differences in lay theories of happiness would predict empathy. In Studies 1a and 1b, we validated the Lay Theories of Happiness Scale (LTHS), which includes three dimensions: flexibility, controllability, and locus. In Study 2, higher dispositional empathy was predicted by the belief that happiness is flexible, controllable, and internal. I

Patients' experiences with using virtual reality for comfort during source isolation: a qualitative feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Source-isolated patients endure feelings of loneliness, discomfort, and imprisonment with sensory deprivation and loss of autonomy. Supporting self-comforting strategies can increase comfort and autonomy and promote participation in recovery. We aim to explore whether and how source-isolated patients use virtual reality (VR) for self-comfort. METHODS: A qualitative interview study, including a cohort of source-isolated patients. Patients received an VR intervention encompassing applications for relaxation and distraction and physical exercise during a maximum of 5 days. Patients w

INTRODUCTION: Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a debilitating and persistent disorder. The standard-of-care treatment is daily maintenance dosing of sublingual buprenorphine (BUP-SL) or oral methadone (MET). Monthly, extended-release, subcutaneous injectable buprenorphine (BUP-XR) has been developed to enhance treatment effectiveness. This study aims to investigate the experiences of participants who have been offered BUP-XR (evaluation 1), health-related quality-of-life among participants who have opted to receive BUP-XR longer term (evaluation 2) and the experiences of participants allocated to

Fat embolism: a systematic review to facilitate the development of standardised procedures in pathology.

Fat embolism (FE) is a historically recognised but still actively researched topic in forensic pathology. Several aspects remain not fully elucidated, such as its aetiopathogenesis, its causal role in death determination, the impact of interfering factors (e.g. cardiopulmonary resuscitation or other medical procedures) and both qualitative and quantitative diagnostic methodologies in clinical and forensic contexts. These issues are further underscored by the potential involvement of FE in the causal determination of non-traumatic deaths, which often raises questions of professional liability.

A pH-Sensitive Sprayable Fluorescent Probe Enables Accurate Visualization of Thyroid Cancer Margins for Fluorescence-Guided Surgery in Orthotopic Mouse Models.

Positive surgical margins (PSMs) are a major predictor of recurrence in thyroid cancer; however, their intraoperative detection remains challenging, particularly for microscopic PSMs. This study aimed to demonstrate that a sprayable pH-sensitive near-infrared fluorescent probe (PH10) could specifically and robustly label thyroid tumors in orthotopic mouse models. The pH sensitivity, cytotoxicity, and cellular uptake mechanisms of PH10 were evaluated in papillary thyroid carcinoma (K1) and anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (8505C) cell lines in vitro. Orthotopic thyroid cancer mouse models were then

Internet-based individually versus group guided self-help treatment for social anxiety disorder: protocol of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is one of the most common mental disorders and causes subjective suffering and economic burden worldwide. Although effective treatments are available, a lot of cases go untreated. Internet-based self-help is a low-threshold and flexible treatment alternative for SAD. Various studies have already shown that internet-based self-help can be effective to reduce social phobic symptoms significantly. Most of the interventions tested include therapist support, whereas the role of peer support within internet-based self-help has not yet been fully understood.

Impact of EUS-guided fine-needle biopsy sampling on International Consensus Diagnostic Criteria for diagnosing autoimmune pancreatitis: a prospective multicenter study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Histologic diagnosis of autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) may be difficult to obtain preoperatively. Based on promising results using new-generation "end-cutting" needles, we aimed to assess the utility of EUS-guided fine-needle biopsy (EUS-FNB) sampling in enhancing diagnostic levels of International Consensus Diagnostic Criteria (ICDC) in patients with probable AIP and in defining the specific AIP subtype. METHODS: Adult patients with suspected AIP were prospectively and competitively enrolled at 4 centers. Definitive AIP diagnosis, according to the ICDC, or patients recent

Cardiologists' perceptions on multidisciplinary collaboration in heart failure care - a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Cardiologists play a key role in multidisciplinary care by guiding heart failure (HF) management in the hospital and in the community. Regional implementation of multidisciplinary health care interventions depends on how they perceive collaboration with other health care disciplines, yet research on this topic is limited. This study aimed to explore the views and opinions of cardiologists on multidisciplinary collaboration in HF care. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study based on face-to-face semi-structured interviews with 11 Belgian cardiologists between September 2019 and

Management of toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis during pregnancy, postpartum period and lactation: clinical observations.

BACKGROUND: During pregnancy and labor, the immune response is physiologically impaired and women are more susceptible to infections. Since many drugs may have potentially adverse effects on the fetus and newborn, less aggressive treatment regimens should be considered in pregnant and lactating patients. The aim of our study was to present the management of toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis during pregnancy, postpartum period, and lactation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study was undertaken of the clinical records of 24 women during pregnancy, postpartum period, and lactation who were re

Juvenile gangrenous vasculitis of the scrotum: systematic review.

Juvenile gangrenous vasculitis of the scrotum (JGVS) is a rare entity with scant reports in the literature. The disease course, treatment, and prevalence have not been well described in the literature. It's hypothesized that JGVS is a variant of pyoderma gangrenosum or a male counterpart of Lipschütz ulcer. This review will analyze the current literature on JGVS and provide a current guide based on the best available data. The initial search of databases yielded 107 studies of which 14 pertained to the topic. The majority of the included studies were case reports (n = 9) reported in Spain. A t

Contact tracing for hepatitis C: perspectives of people with experience of substance use and hepatitis C on intervention acceptability.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic hepatitis C (HCV) is a major cause of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. In the UK, the principal risk factor for HCV is injecting drug use. The introduction of direct acting anti-virals (DAA's) have transformed HCV care, with cure rates of over 95%. However, HCV is often asymptomatic, and reinfection is a concern. Modelling and real-life studies demonstrate the potential effectiveness of a contact tracing approach for finding people who have acquired HCV through injecting drug use. However, it is not used routinely in the UK. This qualitative study was undertaken to

New developments in the treatment of early-onset spinal deformity: role of the Shilla growth guidance system.

Early-onset scoliosis is a complex condition with multiple facets. The goal of treating any spinal deformity is to improve the condition of the patient with the least intervention necessary. A system that allows for continuation of natural spinal growth while correcting the deformity should be the goal of treating this complex condition. The SHILLA growth guidance system allows for continued growth of the pediatric spine while correcting and guiding the apex and guiding the future growth of the curvature. The system involves selective fusion across the apex of the curvature, and minimally inva
