Absence of evoked potential abnormalities in acute transverse myelopathy.

We studied 12 consecutive patients with inflammatory acute transverse myelopathy (ATM) and no prior history of neurologic disease. All had normal pattern shift visual and brainstem auditory evoked potentials. All of nine patients tested also had normal median nerve short-latency somatosensory evoked potentials. None developed new neurologic signs in 18 months' mean follow-up. In contrast, 72% of 50 patients with definite, probable, or possible multiple sclerosis (MS) had abnormalities in at least one evoked potential test. When defined as a virtually or completely transverse inflammatory lesio

Structural and functional asymmetry of the neonatal cerebral cortex.

Features of brain asymmetry have been implicated in a broad range of cognitive processes; however, their origins are still poorly understood. Here we investigated cortical asymmetries in 442 healthy term-born neonates using structural and functional magnetic resonance images from the Developing Human Connectome Project. Our results demonstrate that the neonatal cortex is markedly asymmetric in both structure and function. Cortical asymmetries observed in the term cohort were contextualized in two ways: by comparing them against cortical asymmetries observed in 103 preterm neonates scanned at t

Anxiety-like behavior induced by salicylate depends on age and can be prevented by a single dose of 5-MeO-DMT.

Salicylate intoxication is a cause of tinnitus and comorbidly associated with anxiety in humans. In a previous work, we showed that salicylate induces anxiety-like behavior and hippocampal type 2 theta oscillations (theta2) in mice. Here we investigate if the anxiogenic effect of salicylate is dependent on age and previous tinnitus experience. We also tested whether a single dose of DMT can prevent this effect. Using microwire electrode arrays, we recorded local field potential in young (4-5- month-old) and old (11-13-month-old) mice to study the electrophysiological effect of tinnitus in the

The neural basis of complex audiovisual objects maintenances in working memory.

Working memory research has primarily concentrated on studying our senses separately; the neural basis of maintaining information from multiple sensory modalities in working memory has been not well elucidated. It is debated whether multisensory information is maintained in the form of modality-specific representations or amodal representations. The present study investigated what brain regions were engaged in both types of complex audiovisual objects maintenances (semantically congruent and incongruent) using functional magnetic resonance imaging and conjunction analysis, and examined in whic

Changes in Functional Connectivity of Default Mode Network with Auditory and Right Frontoparietal Networks in Poststroke Aphasia.

To evaluate the influence of poststroke aphasia on the functional association of widespread large-scale neuronal networks, we analyzed functional connectivity (FC) between resting-state brain networks (RSNs) in aphasic patients (N = 15) and in healthy volunteers (N = 17) of the same age using resting-state functional connectivity magnetic resonance imaging. As a result, six RSNs were isolated and cross-correlation matrices were computed for their time courses. Aphasic patients showed decreased correlations between posterior part of the default mode (pDMN) and both auditory (AUD) and right fron

A new neurogenic vestibular evoked potential (N6) recorded with the use of air-conducted sound.

INTRODUCTION: Neurogenic vestibular evoked potentials that are recorded from the scalp have so far been recorded in the form of N3 (click air-conducted), N5 (tone air-conducted), and P10 (bone-conducted stimulus) waveforms. The purpose of this study is to find other vestibular waveforms obtained with air-conducted sound. METHODS: The experiments were organized into 4 parts: 1) topographic scalp mapping; 2) determining the consistency in appearance of candidate vestibular waveforms; 3) further characteristics such as their relationship to vestibular evoked myogenic potentials, sensitivity to 5

Structural analysis of Heschl's gyrus in schizophrenia patients with auditory hallucinations.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Heschl's gyrus (HG) is functionally involved in the genesis of auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH). This dysfunction seems to be structurally facilitated. The aim of the study was to analyze macrostructural features of HG in a group of patients reporting AVH who demonstrated white matter diffusion tensor imaging abnormalities reported previously. METHODS: 3-D anatomical MR scans were obtained (patients with and without history of AVH, controls). HG was delineated by manual segmentation. Cortical folding, absolute and relative volumes, laterality were analyzed. RESULTS: Acco

Audio-vocal system regulation in children with autism spectrum disorders.

Do children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) respond similarly to perturbations in auditory feedback as typically developing (TD) children? Presentation of pitch-shifted voice auditory feedback to vocalizing participants reveals a close coupling between the processing of auditory feedback and vocal motor control. This paradigm was used to test the hypothesis that abnormalities in the audio-vocal system would negatively impact ASD compensatory responses to perturbed auditory feedback. Voice fundamental frequency (F(0)) was measured while children produced an /a/ sound into a microphone. The

Event-related potentials in panic disorder and generalized anxiety disorder.

To evaluate the neurophysiological differences between panic disorder (PD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), 52 patients with PD and 34 with GAD were investigated using event-related potentials (ERP). The ERP were recorded using a tone discrimination task, and peak latencies for N1, P2, N2, and P3 at a Pz electrode site were measured. In addition to analyzing the peak latencies of the ERP, the interpeak latencies (IPL; N1-P2, P2-N2, and N2-P3) were also analyzed. The same analysis was performed in 28 age-matched healthy volunteers (controls). When compared to those of the GAD and control

Severity of focal microgyria and associated rapid auditory processing deficits.

Data from rodent models of induced microgyria suggest that bilateral damage leads to more severe rapid auditory processing deficits than unilateral damage. It is unclear whether this reflects the degree, or bilateral/unilateral nature, of damage. The current study evaluates the effects of microgyric severity by assessing rats with single- vs double-pair bilateral focal microgyric lesions, using auditory discrimination and MGN measures. Behavioral data show a significant auditory processing deficit on rapid processing tasks for microgyric as compared to control subjects, and also reveal more se

Cortical auditory disorder caused by bilateral strategic cerebral bleedings. Analysis of two cases.

The authors present the anatomical and clinical features of cortical auditory dysfunction in two patients, in whom hypertensive bleedings destroyed the cortical auditory centres in both hemispheres. The second haemorrhage occurred four years after the first bleeding in both cases. The bleedings isolated the cortical hearing centres due to the destruction of the right and left temporal white matter. During the clinical course the symptomatology has changed in both patients: pure word deafness has transformed to cortical deafness and generalised auditory agnosia. Normal pattern of brain stem aud

[Retrospective and prospective studies of patients with Cogan I syndrome].

Since August 1987 we documented the course of three patients with Cogan-I-Syndrome (CS) (interstitial keratitis and audio vestibular disorder). The patients (2 female, 1 male) received oral protease therapy in addition to the corticosteroids. Under oral treatment with proteases the corticosteroid therapy could be discontinued. Regression of inflammatory reaction and improvement of hearing was encountered in all patients. In two cases alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT) serum levels were profoundly reduced, reaching normal range during therapy. Concomitant to the raise of this parameter improvement of he

Persistent auditory hallucinations correlate with the size of the third ventricle in schizophrenic patients.

In a study of psychotherapy in schizophrenic patients, the existence of certain clinical and anamnestic variables, such as persistent auditory hallucinations, was found to correlate with a negative outcome. To test whether these clinical variables could be a sign of organic brain abnormality, the records of 33 schizophrenic patients who had been examined by computerized tomography (CT) were investigated regarding the occurrence of these symptoms. A significant correlation was found between width of the third ventricle and the occurrence of such auditory hallucinations, which also persisted bet

Auditory evoked responses in the human fetus. II. Modifications observed during labor.

The author presents his observations made on the behavior of an auditory evoked response of the human fetus during labor, elicited by a standardized sound stimulus at 1500 cycles/second. The method was applied to 233 women during labor and the pattern of responses evoked by sound stimulation was studied in all clinical conditions present in this high-risk population. A fair number of observations was made on vigorous/depressed newborns by Apgar rating, in the presence of definite cardiotocographic signals of fetal distress, in cases of intact or ruptured membranes, in cephalo-pelvic disproport

Effect of carotid artery stenting on cognitive function in patients with asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis, a multimodal magnetic resonance study.

INTRODUCTION: More and more evidence suggesting that internal carotid artery stenosis is not only a risk factor for ischemic stroke but also for cognitive impairments. Hypoperfusion and silent micro emboli have been reported as the pathophysiological mechanisms causing cognitive impairment. The effect of carotid artery stenting (CAS) on cognitive function varied from study to study. This study aims to explore the effect of CAS on cognition and exam the changes in cerebral perfusion and brain connectivity with pulsed arterial spin labeling (pASL) and resting-state functional MRI (R-fMRI). The "Primitive Brain Dysfunction" Theory of Autism: The Superior Colliculus Role.

A better understanding of the pathogenesis of autism will help clarify our conception of the complexity of normal brain development. The crucial deficit may lie in the postnatal changes that vision produces in the brainstem nuclei during early life. The superior colliculus is the primary brainstem visual center. Although difficult to examine in humans with present techniques, it is known to support behaviors essential for every vertebrate to survive, such as the ability to pay attention to relevant stimuli and to produce automatic motor responses based on sensory input. From birth to death, it
