BACKGROUND: Autologous platelet concentrate (APC) contains concentrated platelet-derived growth factors that promote wound healing and tissue regeneration. The purpose of this prospective case series was to compare the treatment effects of an intralesional graft of APC to guided periodontal regeneration (GPR) using a bioabsorbable barrier membrane (MEM) over a 52-week period.
METHODS: Five patients were recruited for the study from two private periodontal practices. There were four females and one male having a mean age of 33 +/- 10.23 years. The five selected contralateral teeth had similar,

Regular home care by the patient in addition to professional removal of subgingival plaque is generally very effective in controlling most inflammatory periodontal diseases. When disease does recur, despite frequent recall, it can usually be attributed to lack of sufficient supragingival and subgingival plaque control or to other risk factors that influence host response, such as diabetes or smoking. Causative factors contributing to recurrent disease include deep inaccessible pockets, overhangs, poor crown margins and plaque-retentive calculus. In most cases, simply performing a thorough peri

AIM: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical and microbiological effect of systemic levofloxacin (LFX) as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) in patients with chronic periodontitis (CP).
METHODS: Sixty-five patients with CP were randomly divided into a test (n = 33, SRP and LFX 500 mg, once daily [o.d.]) and a control group (n = 32, SRP and placebo, o.d.). Plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), percentage of sites with bleeding on probing (%BoP), probing depth (PD), and clinical attachment level (CAL) were recorded at baseline, 10 days, and 1-, 3-, and 6-month inte

Recent literature contains numerous articles on osteonecrosis of the jaws (ONJ) associated with bisphosphonate treatment (BPT), with most advocating a conservative approach to management. A prospective study was designed to review the surgical management of cases of ONJ that did not respond to conservative management. Forty patients, referred with ONJ that did not respond to conservative management, were treated surgically and followed up for 6 months to 4 years. Four patients were taking i.v. BPT as part of their bone cancer management and 16 were taking oral BPT for osteoporosis. The surgica

The purpose of this 4-day plaque regrowth study was to assess the effect of N-chlorotaurine (NCT) mouth rinses on plaque inhibition and plaque vitality. Eighty volunteers participated in this investigator-blind, randomized, clinical controlled study in parallel groups. No oral hygiene was permitted except rinsing with a 2% or 3% NCT mouth rinse, a positive or a negative control. Primary parameters were the plaque index (Silness and Löe, Acta Odontol Scand, 22:121-135, 1964) and plaque vitality (Netuschil et al., J Clin Periodontol, 16:484-488, 1989) after the final rinse. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to quantify nine selected cariogenic bacteria in plaque from sound root surfaces and initial carious root lesions using TaqMan PCR and to analyse a putative dependence on the kind of initial periodontal treatment.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty-four subjects with generalized chronic periodontitis were randomly allocated to one of the following initial periodontal therapies: full-mouth disinfection, full-mouth scaling and root planing or scaling and root planing within 7 days. Plaque samples were taken before and after periodontal treatment and analysed by

PURPOSE: Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) is a severe and therapy-resistant disease. The present study was performed to evaluate the role of the duration of preoperative antibiotic therapy within an otherwise standardized treatment protocol of patients with BRONJ stages I and II. One group of patients received a short-term preoperative antibiotic regime (A-ST) and the other a long-term preoperative antibiotic regime (B-LT).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review was used to analyze 46 patients with BRONJ from 2004 to 2009 who were treated with the same surgi

PURPOSE: To longitudinally determine if early therapeutic intervention, based on a positive neutral protease activity (NPA) assay score could effectively arrest the progress of periodontal disease destruction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 63 periodontal sites which had previously undergone probing attachment loss were identified from among 31 previously treated adult periodontitis patients who were monitored during periodontal maintenance for an average of 3 yrs. Clinical levels of gingival inflammation and attachment levels and NPA assay data were collected at the beginning of each maintenance vis

BACKGROUND: One of the key factors for the long-term success of oral implants is the maintenance of healthy tissues around them. Bacterial plaque accumulation induces inflammatory changes in the soft tissues surrounding oral implants and it may lead to their progressive destruction (perimplantitis) and ultimately to implant failure. Different treatment strategies for perimplantitis have been suggested, however it is unclear which are the most effective.
OBJECTIVES: To identify the most effective interventions for treating perimplantitis around osseointegrated dental implants.

BACKGROUND: Death after surgery is devasting for patients, families, and communities, but remains common in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). We aimed to use high-quality data from an existing global randomised trial to describe the causes and mechanisms of postoperative mortality in LMICs. To do so, we developed a novel framework, learning from both existing classification systems and emerging insights during data analysis.
METHODS: This study was a preplanned secondary analysis of the FALCON trial in 54 hospitals across seven LMICs (Benin, Ghana, India, Mexico, Nigeria, Rwanda

Design A multicentre, prospective, randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blinded clinical trial reported the early implant failure and postoperative infections of healthy or relatively healthy patients receiving 2 grams of amoxicillin one hour preoperatively from their scheduled dental implant placement. The registration of the study protocol in EudraCT and Clinical Trials.gov (#NCT03412305) followed the ethical principles of the Declaration of Helsinki and the CONSORT guidelines for clinical trials.Case selection Several trial drugs expired before recruiting the intended 1,000 patients calcu

BACKGROUND: Treatment of cancer is increasingly effective but associated with short and long term side effects. Oral side effects, including oral mucositis (mouth ulceration), remain a major source of illness despite the use of a variety of agents to treat them.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of interventions for treating oral mucositis or its associated pain in patients with cancer receiving chemotherapy or radiotherapy or both.
SEARCH STRATEGY: Computerised searches of Cochrane Oral Health Group's Trials Register; Cochrane Pain, Palliative and Supportive Care Group's Trials Regist

BACKGROUND: Non-surgical periodontal treatment decreases serum levels of inflammatory cytokines in patients with and without obesity. However, the changes in metabolic parameters in association with these decreases in levels of inflammatory markers by periodontal treatment have not been evaluated in patients with obesity. The aim of this study is to evaluate the short-term changes in systemic inflammatory, lipid, and glucose parameters in the presence of obesity after periodontal treatment.
METHODS: The study included 22 dyslipemic patients with obesity and 24 healthy individuals without obes

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Antimicrobial agents provide valuable adjunctive therapy for the prevention and the control of oral diseases. Limitations in their prolonged use have stimulated the search for new, naturally occurring agents with more specific activity and fewer adverse effects. Here we sought to determine the antibacterial properties of blackberry extract (BBE) in vitro against oral bacterial commensals and periodontopathogens.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The effects of whole and fractionated BBE on the metabolism of 10 different oral bacteria were evaluated using the colorimetric water-s

Dental implant treatment is an important therapeutic modality with documented long-term success for replacement of missing teeth. However, dental implants can be susceptible to disease conditions or healing complications that may lead to implant loss. This case-control study identified several risk indicators associated with failure such as smoking and alcohol consumption. The use of postoperative antibiotics or wide-diameter implants may significantly reduce implant failure. Knowledge of patient-related risk factors may assist the clinician in proper case selection and treatment planning.

The overall goal of this clinical study was to determine the short-term anti-infective effects of four randomized treatment modalities on Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans (Aa), Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg), and Bacteroides forsythus (Bf) and determine the effects of bacterial survival on treatment outcomes in patients with adult periodontitis. Twelve adult patients requiring therapy for moderate periodontitis were selected for this study. All patients had at least one tooth in each quadrant that had an inflamed pocket of probing depth > or =5 mm with probing attachment loss that harbored
