Two cholesterol-based liquid crystalline materials were synthesized by incorporating perfluorinated acyl chains of different lengths with the help of epichlorohydrin and copper(I)-mediated azide-alkyne 2+3 dipolar cycloaddition chemistries. The binding of the gelsolin P2 peptide (residues 150-169) with lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was investigated by isothermal titration calorimetry. P2 binds to LPS with higher affinity than to LPA. The 24-hour rest-activity pattern and the amount of motor activity was studied in a patient with fatal familial insomnia (FFI) by means of wrist actigraphy. During the study, the patient underwent indirect calorimetry. The 52-day recording showed severe disruption of the 24-hour rest-activity pattern with increased motor activity up to 80%. The 24-hour energy expenditure, assayed in a respiration chamber, was strikingly elevated by 60%. Chronic motor overactivity and loss of circadian rest-activity rhythm may play a role in the progressive metabolic exhaustion leading to death in FFI patients.

The relative enthalpy of a sample of alpha beryllium nitride, Be3N2, of 95 percent purity was precisely measured over the temperature range 273 to 1173 K using a drop calorimetric method. Corrections were applied for the impurities, and the resulting heat capacity-temperature function was required to join smoothly that from recent precise NBS adiabatic calorimetry which covered the range 20 to 315 K. The enthalpy, heat capacity, entropy, and Gibbs free-energy function were computed from empirical functions of temperature and tabulated from 273 to 1200 K.

We conducted a placebo-controlled crossover pilot study investigating the effects of 2 mo of active and sham continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) on energy expenditure (EE) via whole-room indirect calorimetry in three obese obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) patients. Total 24-h (active: 2970 ± 254 kcal/d, sham: 2705 ± 217 kcal/d; p = 0.015) and mean sleeping (active: 1.60 ± 0.20 kcal/min; sham: 1.47 ± 0.17 kcal/min; p = 0.038) EE were significantly increased after active vs. sham CPAP. Findings suggest that CPAP may correct a hypoxia-related adaptive decrease in thermogenesis.
