Spontaneous intra-abdominal bleeding has been called abdominal apoplexy. It has been so named because its nature and spontaneity closely resemble those of its more common cerebral counterpart. The bleeding source commonly came from a ruptured branch of celiac axis or superior mesenteric artery. Rarely, hemoperitoneum occurs spontaneously post coitus without evident vaginal injury. There were only twelve cases reported in the medical literature to date. Nearly, all of them showed injury of pelvic organs including round or broad ligaments, ovarian cysts or adhesion bands. A case of massive hemop

Mesenteric cysts (MCs), rare entities of embryologic origin, predominantly affect the small bowel's mesentery. The clinical manifestations of MCs often lack specificity, which complicates diagnosis. Given their rarity, detailed reporting of MC cases is essential to enhance understanding and improve treatment strategies. We present a case of a 45-year-old male who presented to the emergency department with a one-month history of abdominal pain in the umbilical region, postprandial fullness, progressive decrease in food intake, 12 kg weight loss, and increased abdominal girth. Computed tomograph

PURPOSE: Evaluation of the feasibility, cost-effectiveness, time of surgery, morbidities, and other/additional findings during laparoscopy for suspected appendicitis.
METHODS: Prospective evaluation of 148 laparoscopies for suspected acute appendicitis.
RESULTS: Laparoscopic appendectomy was safe and cost-effective. No appendiceal stump leaks or wound infections occurred. Of the patients, 4.7% developed intra-abdominal abscesses. Mean time of all procedures was 47 min: 42 min for simple appendectomies (n = 126), 67 min for perforated appendicitis (n = 15), and 75 min for converted procedures

UNLABELLED: Hepatobiliopancreatic surgery is challenging becouse of the complexity of resections and reconstructions and variability of vascular anatomy. The arterial vascularization of the liver is susteined by the common hepatic artery (CHA) that originates from the celiac trunk (CT). The CHA bifurcates into the gastroduodenal artery (GDA) and proper hepatic artery (PHA) 0.5-1 cm medial to the common bile duct (CBD), and the PHA bifurcates into a right and a left branch at hepatic hilum. The most frequent variants are the right hepatic artery (RHA) from the superior mesenteric artery (SMA),

We report a rare case of a 62-year-old man with a right giant inguinoscrotal hernia and a concurrent retroperitoneal mass. Preoperative imaging was inconclusive regarding the hernia sac contents and the nature of the pelvic mass. Intraoperatively, the hernia sac contained the caecum, appendix, Meckel's diverticulum (MD) and terminal ileum-confirming the simultaneous presence of Amyand and Littre hernias. Additionally, a left-sided retroperitoneal solid-cystic mass was identified and excised. This case underscores the diagnostic difficulties posed by complex hernias and highlighted the surgical

Congenital chylous ascites (CCA) is a rare cause of ascites in newborn infants. The main causes include congenital lymphatic obstruction due to atresia or stenosis of the major lacteals, mesenteric cysts and lymphangiomatosis. The mainstay of treatment for CCA is conservative management including medium-chain triglycerides (MCT)-based diet or total parenteral nutrition (TPN), and the addition of octreotide. Surgical exploration is reserved for those cases in whom conservative management has failed. The core problem of chylous abdominal surgery is to find the leakage; once the exact chylous lea

RATIONALE: Desmoid-type fibromatosis is a rare benign mesenchymal neoplasm. Only 8% of desmoid-type fibromatosis develops in the abdominal cavity. The mesentery is seldom affected and gastrointestinal stromal tumors need to be considered in the differential diagnosis, particularly when imaging examination shows a tumor containing gases in the abdominal cavity. Only a few cases of gas-containing mesenteric desmoid-type fibromatosis have been reported in the literature.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 69-year-old male patient presented with hematochezia and intermittent upper abdominal pain.

BACKGROUND: Accessory ovaries are rare anomalies and cysts arising from accessory ovaries are extremely rare. Their reported incidence is 1/29,000-1/700,000. Establishing the diagnosis preoperatively is difficult. Radiologic methods are usually inadequate in recognizing the origin of these tumors. Thus, they are usually confused with other intraabdominal tumors.
CASE: A 22-year-old nulliparous girl presented with abdominal pain and tumoral growth for 1.5 years. Abdominal ultrasound and computed tomography revealed a 33 x 26 x 15 cm cystic mass filling the abdominal cavity. The preoperative di

The pathological changes induced by an infection of Diphyllobothrium dendriticum (Nitzsch, 1824) plerocercoids in powan, Coregonus lavaretus (L.), from Loch Lomond, Scotland, were assessed using immunohistochemical and ultrastructural techniques. In a sample of 26 powan, the occurrence of encysted plerocercoids of D. dendriticum on the outer surface of the stomach was 38.5% (n = 10) with the number of cysts ranging from 4 to 15 and measuring 4.2 +/- 1.0 mm x 3.4 +/- 0.9 mm (mean +/- SD). Histological examination of intestinal samples also revealed plerocercoids (2-21) encapsulated within a pro

Cystic lymphangiomas (CLs) are rare benign vascular malformations, primarily occurring in children, often in the cervicofacial region. Intra-abdominal lymphangiomas, though less common, can lead to serious complications such as volvulus and intestinal obstruction. We report two cases of volvulus resulting from mesenteric CLs (MCLs) in pediatric patients. Both patients presented with acute intestinal obstruction and underwent emergency laparotomy, which included complete resection of the cysts, resulting in favorable postoperative outcomes. These cases underscore the necessity of considering CL

Desmoid tumours are benign, myofibroblastic stromal neoplasms common in Gardner's syndrome, which is a subtype of familial adenomatous polyposis characterized by colonic polyps, osteomas, thyroid cancer, epidermoid cysts, fibromas and sebaceous cysts. The primary treatment is surgery, followed by adjuvant radiotherapy, but the local recurrence rate is high, and wide resection can result in debilitating loss of function. We report the case of a 39-year-old man with Gardner's syndrome who had already undergone a total prophylactic colectomy. He developed desmoid tumours localized in the mesenter

Analysis of cytokine production (IFN-gamma, IL-2, IL-3, IL-4, IL-5) by in vitro Con A-stimulated mesenteric lymph node cells measured daily after egg or cyst infection of mice with Hymenolepis nana showed that cytokine production varies during parasite development and between different host strains (BALB/c and C3H/He mice). Egg infection stimulates a rapid increase in IFN-gamma, independent of mouse strain. In addition, in BALB/c mice a Th2-like response (IL-4, IL-5 secretion) was stimulated 4-5 days p.i., when the parasites are thought to begin their lumenal phase. After infection with cysts

INTRODUCTION: Extragastrointestinal stromal tumors (EGIST) are rarer counterparts of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) in omentum, mesentery, and retroperitoneum.
CASE REPORT: Hereby, authors present a 47-year-old man with abdominal mass whose abdominal CT scan revealed a large septated cystic mass measuring 16 cm in largest diameter. The mass was aspirated and resected by laparotomy. Pathologic examination exhibited a mesenchymal spindle cell neoplasm which was immunohistochemically reactive for CD117 and SMA. Thus, the diagnosis of extragastrointestinal stromal tumor was made.

OBJECTIVE: Cystic hydatid disease is a zoonotic infection of humans caused by infection with the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus. The prevalence rate (5-10%) in Turkana, Northern Kenya is among the highest worldwide. With an increase in foreign travel and migration of peoples, practitioners need to be aware of diseases common in these countries and their rarer manifestations. The objective of this study was to review the management of this disease in a poorly resourced high-prevalence area.
METHODS: The surgical records of Kakuma Mission Hospital, Turkana from July 1981 to May 2002 we

Toxoplasma gondii is a common perorally transmitted parasite; however, its immunopathogenesis in gut-associated tissues remains unclear. Here, we compared disease manifestation in C57BL/6 immunocompetent wild type (WT) mice and immunocompromised interferon (IFN)-γ-deficient (GKO) mice after peroral infection (PI) with T. gondii cysts (Fukaya strain). Strong PI-induced Th1 cytokine expression was detected in WT mice. Moreover, bradyzoite-specific T.g.HSP30/bag1 mRNA was detected in the ileum parenchyma and Peyer's patches (PP), but not in the mesenteric lymph nodes, at 7 days post-infection in

Intestinal malrotation persisting into adulthood is rare and may cause atypical presentations of common surgical emergencies such as appendicitis. Left-sided acute appendicitis due to malrotation is an uncommon but important diagnostic pitfall. We present A 28-year-old woman with no past medical history who presented to the emergency department at our institution in August 2025 with a three-day history of progressive left-sided abdominal pain localized mainly to the left iliac fossa. Laboratory investigations revealed leukocytosis (WBC 15 × 109/L) with neutrophilia. Contrast-enhanced CT demons
