[Orbital exenteration. A preventable course in tumor treatment?!].

We reviewed the conditions leading to the mutilating procedure of orbital exenteration in 24 patients at our institution between 1980 and 1993. In 17 cases, including 16 of 17 patients with malignant tumours of the eyelid, this operation could potentially have been avoided. Three of these 17 patients first saw a doctor at an extremely advanced and otherwise untreatable stage of the tumour. The other 14 patients had at least one previous treatment attempt. Six patients with basal cell carcinoma had been primarily treated with radiation alone; two of them developed a squamous cell carcinoma subs

Multi-disciplinary surgical management of ocular and maxillofacial ballistic injury: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Injury to the maxillofacial region is of great importance due to the highly sensitive area, and the vital structures it carries. Special surgical wounding techniques must be used due to the significant tissue destruction. We report a unique case of a ballistic blast injury in a pregnant woman in a civilian setting. CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old pregnant female, in the third trimester, presented at our hospital after ballistic ocular and maxillofacial injuries. Due to the complex nature of her injury, a multi-disciplinary team consisting of otolaryngologists, ne

The swinging sclera technique for evisceration.

PURPOSE: To present a modified evisceration technique with a full-thickness horizontal sclerotomy and assess post-operative motility and long-term outcomes. METHODS: This is a retrospective chart review of patients who underwent evisceration with a single surgeon (TJM). The standard initial steps of evisceration were performed. Before implant placement, a complete radial sclerotomy was extended posteriorly at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions, 2 mm above the optic nerve, longitudinally dividing the medial and lateral rectus insertions. The scleral halves were mobilized, allowing them to "swing" f

Precision in Prosthetics: Two Case Reports on Transformative Rehabilitation With Custom Ocular and Orbital Prostheses.

The eyes play a crucial role in vision and emotional expression, and their loss can profoundly affect appearance and psychological well-being. Eye loss may result from trauma, tumors, infections, malignancies, or congenital abnormalities. Surgical methods for removing an eye include enucleation, evisceration, and exenteration. When surgical reconstruction is insufficient, prosthetic rehabilitation becomes necessary, requiring collaboration among ophthalmologists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, and prosthodontists. Ocular and orbital prostheses, which may be either prefabricated or custom-mad
