[Laboratory diagnosis of rare diseases].

Psittacosis (parrot fever) is underdiagnosed in Sweden, possibly due to lack of awareness, and the fact that only five out of 24 clinical microbiology laboratories routinely perform the PCR test for Chlamydia psittaci. The test has shown 100% sensitivity and 100% sensitivity for the pathogen in samples from the lower part of the respiratory tract which caters for a high predictive value in patients with symptoms and signs of community-acquired atypical pneumonias, provided optimal patient selection. Knowledge and awareness of treatable rare diseases amongst healthcare personnel combined with c

[A case report on the achondroplasia and its dental findings].

Achondroplasia is characterized by an undergrowth of arms and legs bones, low height and undergrowth of the Basis cranil. The name of this disease was called Chondrodystrohia foetalis before Parrot reported the name of this disease as Achondroplasia, distinguished from other similar diseases. We are reporting in this paper on an 11-year, 2-month-old girl with Achondroplasia. The dental findings as follows: 1) Open bite was observed for the front teeth. 2) The size, number, form and growth of the teeth were usual. 3) The tongue was a little bigger than usual. 4) According to X-ray cephalometric

Compendium of Measures to Control Chlamydia psittaci Infection Among Humans (Psittacosis) and Pet Birds (Avian Chlamydiosis), 2017.

Psittacosis, also known as parrot fever and ornithosis, is a bacterial infection that can cause severe pneumonia and other serious health problems in humans. It is caused by Chlamydia psittaci. Reclassification of the order Chlamydiales in 1999 into 2 genera (Chlamydia and Chlamydophila) was not wholly accepted or adopted. This resulted in a reversion to the single, original genus Chlamydia, which now encompasses all 9 species including Chlamydia psittaci. During 2003-2014, 112 human cases of psittacosis were reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention through the Nationally Not

HEALTH-SCREENING PROTOCOLS FOR VINACEOUS AMAZONS (AMAZONA VINACEA) IN A REINTRODUCTION PROJECT.

Reintroduction is a growing field in the conservation of endangered species. The vinaceous Amazon parrot (Amazona vinacea) is extinct in several areas, and a project to release confiscated individuals to their former range is currently underway. The objective of this study was to evaluate and improve the selection and treatment of individual release candidates by detecting possible pathogen carriers using samples taken before and during release. As part of prerelease health protocols, samples were obtained from 29 parrots on three different occasions while in captivity and once after their rel

Rituximab therapy in a patient with steroid-refractory bird fancier's lung.

A 62-year-old woman presented with a 3-month history of shortness of breath on exertion and dry cough. On examination, she was noted to have fine end-inspiratory crepitations over the upper zone of the lungs. Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) showed a restrictive defect. Initial chest radiography revealed diffuse reticular interstitial shadowing while high-resolution CT scan of the thorax showed fibrotic changes. Avian precipitins were also highly positive for pigeons, parrots and budgerigars. Taking into account these results, the patient was diagnosed with hypersensitivity pneumonitis. Antigen

Antemortem Diagnosis of Coxiellosis in a Blue and Gold Macaw ( Ara ararauna).

A 15-year-old female blue and gold macaw ( Ara ararauna) was presented for evaluation after being found laterally recumbent, reluctant to move, and lethargic. Results of a complete blood count showed an increased number of immature heterophils with increased cytoplasmic basophilia and degranulation and the presence of a left shift. Radiographs and a computed tomography scan were performed and revealed a markedly enlarged spleen. An ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspirate of the spleen was submitted for cytologic examination and aerobic bacterial culture. While the culture revealed no growth, cy

[A case of bird fanciers' lung with endobronchial polyps].

A 34-year-old woman who had been keeping five budgerigars in her home was admitted with cough and progressive exertional dyspnea that had continued for three months. Chest CT scan demonstrated diffuse centrilobular nodular opacities throughout both lung fields. Flexible bronchoscopy revealed polypoid lesions with diameters of 2-3 mm located at the right B1/B2 spur. B3a/B3b spur and middle/lower bronchus spur. Their surfaces were glossy and smooth but slightly lobulated. The histological findings were consistent with inflammatory polyps containing lymphoid follicles in a dense infiltrate of lym

A Sensor Fusion Approach to Observe Quadrotor Velocity.

The growing use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) raises the need to improve their autonomous navigation capabilities. Visual odometry allows for dispensing positioning systems, such as GPS, especially on indoor flights. This paper reports an effort toward UAV autonomous navigation by proposing a translational velocity observer based on inertial and visual measurements for a quadrotor. The proposed observer complementarily fuses available measurements from different domains and is synthesized following the Immersion and Invariance observer design technique. Investigation and sequence analysis of psittacine beak and feather disease virus and avian polyomavirus from companion birds in Windhoek, Namibia.

The commercial farming and trading of parrots and ornamental birds as companion animals are important economic activities in many countries. Some of the bird species farmed/traded are captured from the wild or are closely related to wild birds and therefore represent a risk of pathogen exchange/introduction. Beak and feather disease virus (BFDV) and avian poliomavirus (APV) are among the viruses with the biggest impact on companion bird populations and have been detected in different hosts worldwide. Despite their relevance for both domesticated and wild birds, our knowledge of BFDV and APV ep

Captive Psittacines with Chlamydia avium Infection.

Avian chlamydiosis is an infection caused by obligate intracellular, gram-negative bacteria belonging to the Chlamydiaceae family. Birds can be hosts of several Chlamydia species, including Chlamydia avium, which has only been detected in pigeons and psittacine birds. In this study, depression, respiratory distress, and mortality were noted among psittacines belonging to a large aviary with 35 different avian species. On the basis of immunohistochemistry and PCR testing, chlamydiosis was diagnosed in affected birds. Gross and histopathologic lesions were mainly observed in the spleen and gastr

Normobaric hyperoxic stress in budgerigars: non-enzymic antioxidants.

The effects of oxygen exposure on pulmonary and blood non-enzymic antioxidant concentrations was evaluated in budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus). Budgerigars were exposed to acute (3 h), repeated acute (3 exposures each of 3 h) or chronic (72 h) normobaric hyperoxic environments and the pulmonary and plasma concentrations of selected non-enzymic antioxidants, namely glutathione, uric acid, alpha- and gamma-tocopherol and carotenoids were assayed. With increasing duration of oxygen exposure, the ratio of oxidised to reduced glutathione was significantly increased, while the concentrations of

The Saethre-Chotzen syndrome.

The Saethre-Chotzen Syndrome (SCS) is characterized by craniosynostosis, low-set frontal hairline, parrot-beaked nose with deviated septum, ptosis of the eyelids, strabismus, refractive error, tear duct stenosis, dystopia canthorum, brachydactyly and abnormal dermatoglyphic patterns. The syndrome follows an autosomal dominant mode of transmission with complete penetrance and variable expressivity. Many cases of SCS have been previously reported but erroneously diagnosed as Crouzon syndrome, "pseudo-Crouzon" syndrome, simple craniosynostis, microcephaly or other inappropriate diagnostic categor

[Psittacosis - a forgotten diagnosis in Sweden?].

Psittacosis, parrot fever, is an infectious disease caused by Chlamydophila psittaci, a common pathogen among birds. The clinical course ranges from a mild flu-like illness to severe disease that requires intensive care in humans. We report three cases of severe pneumonia where C. psittaci was unexpectedly detected during routine validation of a new C. psittaci PCR assay. Psittacosis is a notifiable disease in Sweden and national statistics show that 96% of Swedish psittacosis cases were identified in five of the 24 microbiological laboratories available in the country. These five laboratories

Gestational psittacosis: A case report and literature review.

Gestational psittacosis is a rare disease that is associated with significant maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. Currently, there is no examination method which allows for a quick diagnosis. We report a case of gestational psittacosis that could not be diagnosed as psittacosis during treatment and resulted in maternal and fetal death despite intensive treatment. We also reviewed 23 cases of gestational psittacosis. Fetal and maternal mortality was 82.6% (19/23) and 8.7% (2/23), respectively. In pregnant women with high fever and flu-like symptoms, we should suspect Chlamydia psittaci

Novel Insights into Chromosome Evolution in Birds, Archosaurs, and Reptiles.

Homologous synteny blocks (HSBs) and evolutionary breakpoint regions (EBRs) in mammalian chromosomes are enriched for distinct DNA features, contributing to distinct phenotypes. To reveal HSB and EBR roles in avian evolution, we performed a sequence-based comparison of 21 avian and 5 outgroup species using recently sequenced genomes across the avian family tree and a newly-developed algorithm. We identified EBRs and HSBs in ancestral bird, archosaurian (bird, crocodile, and dinosaur), and reptile chromosomes. Genes involved in the regulation of gene expression and biosynthetic processes were p

From Forest Extraction to Digital Markets: Illegal Macaw Trade and Adaptive Monitoring for Forest Wildlife Resilience.

Illegal wildlife trade contributes to biodiversity loss, but trade in forest-dependent parrots is often examined through disconnected evidence streams, including field observations, declared trade records, seizures, online advertisements, and animal-welfare cases. Macaws provide a useful focal group because many species combine high market visibility with delayed maturity, long life spans, low reproductive output, and dependence on suitable nesting cavities. This structured narrative review synthesizes 80 sources, including peer-reviewed studies, CITES resources, official reports, policy docum

Immunogenicity of DNA, mRNA and Subunit Vaccines Against Beak and Feather Disease Virus.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Beak and feather disease virus (BFDV) is the causative agent of psittacine beak and feather disease (PBFD), affecting psittacine birds. There is currently no commercial vaccine or treatment for this disease. This study developed a novel BFDV coat protein mRNA vaccine encapsidated by TMV coat protein to form pseudovirions (PsVs) and tested its immunogenicity alongside BFDV coat protein (CP) subunit and DNA vaccine candidates. METHODS: mRNA and BFDV CP subunit vaccine candidates were produced in Nicotiana benthamiana and subsequently purified using PEG precipitation and g
