The condition of delayed or altered passive eruption exists in adults when the gingival unit remains positioned on the convex prominence of the enamel rather than at or in proximity to the cementoenamel junction. Treatment protocol is based on periodontal, esthetic, and prosthetic considerations. In addition, the gingival/osseous relationship becomes important for proper diagnosis and treatment. The purpose of this article is to increase awareness of the pathognomonic signs and symptoms of delayed passive eruption so that appropriate treatment can be rendered.

Perceived and normative dental needs were assessed for people of pre-retirement (55-64 years) and retirement age (65-74 years) in Camberwell, London, using a postal questionnaire and dental examination. Of the pre-retirement group, 77% were dentate compared with 65% in the older cohort. Owing to its single surgical intervention, immediate implant placement has the advantage of shortening treatment time, and thus positively affects patient morbidity. According to the bone resorption pattern after tooth extraction, bone loss should be anticipated if immediate implant placement is considered. The present case report aims to present a possible treatment option and to demonstrate that a partially edentulous arch may be rehabilitated esthetically by immediate implant placement and by corresponding anticipatory measures.
