Classification of Normal and Malicious Traffic Based on an Ensemble of Machine Learning for a Vehicle CAN-Network.

Connectivity and automation have expanded with the development of autonomous vehicle technology. One of several automotive serial protocols that can be used in a wide range of vehicles is the controller area network (CAN). The growing functionality and connectivity of modern vehicles make them more vulnerable to cyberattacks aimed at vehicular networks. The CAN bus protocol is vulnerable to numerous attacks, as it is lacking security mechanisms by design. It is crucial to design intrusion detection systems (IDS) with high accuracy to detect attacks on the CAN bus. In this paper, we design an e

The Role of Statistical Learning in Understanding and Treating Spoken Language Outcomes in Deaf Children With Cochlear Implants.

PURPOSE: Statistical learning-the ability to learn patterns in environmental input-is increasingly recognized as a foundational mechanism necessary for the successful acquisition of spoken language. Spoken language is a complex, serially presented signal that contains embedded statistical relations among linguistic units, such as phonemes, morphemes, and words, which represent the phonotactic and syntactic rules of language. In this review article, we first review recent work that demonstrates that, in typical language development, individuals who display better nonlinguistic statistical learn

Implicit Learning, Bilingualism, and Dyslexia: Insights From a Study Assessing AGL With a Modified Simon Task.

This paper presents an experimental study investigating artificial grammar learning in monolingual and bilingual children, with and without dyslexia, using an original methodology. We administered a serial reaction time task, in the form of a modified Simon task, in which the sequence of the stimuli was manipulated according to the rules of a simple Lindenmayer grammar (more specifically, a Fibonacci grammar). By ensuring that the subjects focused on the correct response execution at the motor stage in presence of congruent or incongruent visual stimuli, we could meet the two fundamental crite

Visuo-spatial ability in individuals with Down syndrome: is it really a strength?

Down syndrome (DS) is associated with extreme difficulty in verbal skills and relatively better visuo-spatial skills. Indeed, visuo-spatial ability is often considered a strength in DS. However, it is not clear whether this strength is only relative to the poor verbal skills, or, more impressively, relative to cognitive ability in general. To answer this question, we conducted an extensive literature review of studies on visuo-spatial abilities in people with Down syndrome from January 1987 to May 2013. Based on a general taxonomy of spatial abilities patterned after Lohman, Pellegrino, Aldert

No difference in cognitive performance between phases of the menstrual cycle.

No differences were seen in performance on either verbosequential or visuospatial neuropsychological tests among three groups of women. There were also no differences among the phases of the menstrual cycle on any of the tests. The design of this study was to sample performance of women on verbosequential and visuospatial neuropsychological tests during phases of the normal menstrual cycle in regularly menstruating women, and at comparable time points among women taking oral contraceptives and among those who had amenorrhea. Serum luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), e

Anticholinergic effects on memory: benztropine versus amantadine.

To evaluate anticholinergic effects on cognition and other functions, we studied 60 healthy volunteers in a double-blind crossover trial of two antiparkinsonian agents, benztropine and amantadine. Benztropine 4 mg/day, but not amantadine 200 mg/day, impaired free recall and perception of time, and subjects' perception of their own memory impairment was significantly greater with benztropine. Side effects in general were worse with benztropine, particularly such anticholinergic effects as dry mouth and blurred vision, and benztropine decreased measured salivary flow to a significantly greater d

Dissociation of long-term verbal memory and fronto-executive impairment in first-episode psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Verbal memory is frequently and severely affected in schizophrenia and has been implicated as a mediator of poor clinical outcome. Whereas encoding deficits are well demonstrated, it is unclear whether retention is impaired. This distinction is important because accelerated forgetting implies impaired consolidation attributable to medial temporal lobe (MTL) dysfunction whereas impaired encoding and retrieval implicates involvement of prefrontal cortex. METHOD: We assessed a group of healthy volunteers (n=97) and pre-morbid IQ- and sex-matched first-episode psychosis patients (n=97

tDCS to temporoparietal cortex during familiarisation enhances the subsequent phonological coherence of nonwords in immediate serial recall.

Research has shown that direct current stimulation (tDCS) over left temporoparietal cortex - a region implicated in phonological processing - aids new word learning. The locus of this effect remains unclear since (i) experiments have not empirically separated the acquisition of phonological forms from lexical-semantic links and (ii) outcome measures have focused on learnt associations with a referent rather than phonological stability. We tested the hypothesis that left temporoparietal tDCS would strengthen the acquisition of phonological forms, even in the absence of the opportunity to acquir

Developmental 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) impairs sequential and spatial but not cued learning independent of growth, litter effects or injection stress.

Previously, we have shown that rats administered MDMA from postnatal (P) days 11-20 had reductions in body weight during the period of treatment and as adults they had deficits in sequential and spatial learning and memory. In the present study, to control for weight reductions, we used litters with double the number of offspring to induce growth restriction comparable to that of standard size litters treated with MDMA. Litters were treated twice daily from P11 to 20 with vehicle or MDMA (20 mg/kg) or only weighed. Males, but not females, exposed to MDMA had longer latencies and more errors in

The clinical dilemma of the persistent idiopathic pneumoperitoneum: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Idiopathic pneumoperitoneum (IP) is a rare phenomenon which merits special attention. It is defined as free intraperitoneal air which is not caused by viscus perforation and does not require surgical intervention. It is generally considered a diagnosis of exclusion and often poses a genuine diagnostic dilemma. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present an unusual case of persistent pneumoperitoneum with no identifiable cause which was found incidentally on a computed tomography (CT) scan in a patient with chronic cough and no prior surgical history. Serial consults revealed no abdominal s

Reading normal and degraded words: contribution of the dorsal and ventral visual pathways.

Fast, parallel word recognition, in expert readers, relies on sectors of the left ventral occipito-temporal pathway collectively known as the visual word form area. This expertise is thought to arise from perceptual learning mechanisms that extract informative features from the input strings. The perceptual expertise hypothesis leads to two predictions: (1) parallel word recognition, based on the ventral visual system, should be limited to words displayed in a familiar format (foveal horizontal words with normally spaced letters); (2) words displayed in formats outside this field of expertise

Statistical learning of unbalanced exclusive-or temporal sequences in humans.

A pervasive issue in statistical learning has been to determine the parameters of regularity extraction. Our hypothesis was that the extraction of transitional probabilities can prevail over frequency if the task involves prediction. Participants were exposed to four repeated sequences of three stimuli (XYZ) with each stimulus corresponding to the position of a red dot on a touch screen that participants were required to touch sequentially. The temporal and spatial structure of the positions corresponded to a serial version of the exclusive-or (XOR) that allowed testing of the respective effec

Pre-eclampsia. II: Investigative procedures.

Pre-eclampsia is a potential hazard to both mother and fetus. Clinical features alone give a poor indication of the significance or severity of the condition. Investigations which indicate the extent of multisystem maternal changes help to distinguish pre-eclampsia from other hypertensive disorders and help to assess the need for, and timing of intervention. Serial assessments of sensitive indicators such as proteinuria, platelet counts and serum urate are more helpful than single measurements. Full ultrasound biophysical profiles of the fetus are desirable in the presence of severe pre-eclamp

Cognitive functions in ataxia with oculomotor apraxia type 2.

BACKGROUND: Ataxia with oculomotor apraxia type 2 (AOA2) is characterized by cerebellar atrophy, peripheral neuropathy, oculomotor apraxia, and elevated serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) levels. The disease is caused by a recessive mutation in the senataxin gene. Since it is a very rare cerebellar disorder, no detailed examination of cognitive functions in AOA2 has been published to date. The aim of the present study was to investigate the neuropsychological profile of a 54-year-old patient with AOA2. METHODS: A broad range of neuropsychological examination protocol was administered including the

An Automated Diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease from MRI Scans Based on Enhanced Residual Dense Network with Attention Mechanism.

The increasing prevalence of neurodegenerative diseases has recently heightened interest in research on early diagnosis of these diseases. Parkinson's disease (PD), among the most prominent of these conditions, is a neurological disorder causing the loss of nerve cells and significantly affecting movement control. Detection of PD in early stages is of critical importance to prevent the progression of the disease and improve treatment processes. The aim of the current study is to develop a deep learning model that can perform accurate classification for early diagnosis of PD from MRI images. In

Does Motor Memory Reactivation through Practice and Post-Learning Sleep Modulate Consolidation?

Retrieving previously stored information makes memory traces labile again and can trigger restabilization in a strengthened or weakened form depending on the reactivation condition. Available evidence for long-term performance changes upon reactivation of motor memories and the effect of post-learning sleep on their consolidation remains scarce, and so does the data on the ways in which subsequent reactivation of motor memories interacts with sleep-related consolidation. Eighty young volunteers learned (Day 1) a 12-element Serial Reaction Time Task (SRTT) before a post-training Regular Sleep (

The quantitative assessment of apraxic deficits in Alzheimer's disease.

The purpose of this study was to devise quantitative methods for the assessment of praxic skills of the upper limbs by developing a computerised task which permits each component of a sequence of actions to be timed precisely. Furthermore, two versions of such a quantitative measure were developed to investigate the relationship between meaningful and meaningless movements. The praxic skills of 35 patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and 75 healthy controls were assessed on two 3-item sequential movement tasks involving either meaningful or meaningless actions. A qualitative rating scale ass

Formation and lateralization of internal representations underlying motor commands during precision grip.

The capability to store and retrieve weight-related information from a lift to scale the force output during a subsequent lift was examined in 10 healthy adults and 50 children (age 2-10 years), as well as a 22-year-old patient with corpus callosum agenesis. Subjects lifted a test object between the thumb and index finger while the isometric fingertip forces were measured. The results suggest that both healthy children and adults can transfer weight-related information between the right and left hand, although a lateralization was found. Also, the storage and retrieval of weight-related inform

Does transcranial direct current stimulation of the primary motor cortex improve implicit motor sequence learning in Parkinson's disease?

Implicit motor sequence learning (IMSL) is a cognitive function that is known to be associated with impaired motor function in Parkinson's disease (PD). We previously reported positive effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the primary motor cortex (M1) on IMSL in 11 individuals with PD with mild cognitive impairments (MCI), with the largest effects occurring during reacquisition. In the present study, we included 35 individuals with PD, with (n = 15) and without MCI (n = 20), and 35 age- and sex-matched controls without PD, with (n = 13) and without MCI (n = 22). We us
