Hijacking anaerobic metabolism to restore antibiotic efficacy in Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Bacterial pathogens regularly encounter oxygen (O2) limitation at sites of infection in the human body. Many pathogens exhibit antibiotic recalcitrance under low O2 conditions, spotlighting the need for new therapeutics that are effective in O2-limited environments. We demonstrate that several classes of antibiotics display limited toxicity against hypoxic cultures of the opportunistic pathogen, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, where the pathogen exhibits antibiotic tolerance. In O2-limited host environments, many pathogens employ nitrate respiration, marking this anaerobic bacterial metabolism as an e

Emergence of transferable tigecycline and eravacycline resistance gene tet(X4) in Escherichia coli isolates from Iran.

Tigecycline (TGC) and eravacycline (ERV) are critical last-resort antibiotics used to treat complicated infections caused by extensively drug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria particularly carbapenem- and colistin-resistant Enterobacterales. The recent emergence of plasmid-mediated TGC resistance gene tet(X) in Enterobacterales of both animal and human origins represents a significant public health threat. In this study, we characterized tet(X4)-bearing Escherichia coli isolates recovered from cattle fecal samples in Iran. A total of 395 fecal samples obtained from calves were screened for tige

The resistance patterns and molecular characteristics of ESBL/AmpC-producing Escherichia coli from captive panda ecosystem in China.

Escherichia coli (E. coli) plays an important ecological role, and is a useful bioindicator to recognize the evolution of resistance in human, animal and environment. Recently, extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL) producing E.coli has posed a threat to public health. Generally, captive healthy giant pandas are not exposed to antibiotics; however, they still acquire antimicrobial resistant bacteria. In order to understand whether there is an exchange of resistance genes within the ecosystems of captive giant pandas, this study explored resistance characteristics of 330 commensal E. coli isolat

Decoding Klebsiella pneumoniae in poultry chain: unveiling genetic landscape, antibiotic resistance, and biocide tolerance in non-clinical reservoirs.

The rise of antibiotic resistance in the food chain is influenced by the use of antimicrobial agents, such as antibiotics, metals, and biocides, throughout the entire farm-to-fork continuum. Besides, non-clinical reservoirs potentially contribute to the transmission of critical pathogens such as multidrug-resistant (MDR) Klebsiella pneumoniae. However, limited knowledge exists about the population structure and genomic diversity of K. pneumoniae circulating in conventional poultry production. We conducted a comprehensive characterization of K. pneumoniae across the whole chicken production cha

Dietary nucleotide supplementation as an alternative to in-feed antibiotics in weaned piglets.

Nucleotides are important to cell growth and division and are crucial to the rapid proliferation of such cells as the intestinal mucosa and immune cells. Accordingly, the nucleotide requirements of animals are high during periods of rapid growth and periods of stress like post-weaning period. Thus, nucleotide supplementation may be a possible alternative to in-feed antibiotics as growth promoter in this phase. The study aimed to evaluate dietary nucleotide supplementation as an alternative to in-feed antibiotics on performance and gut health of weaned piglets. Ninety-six 21-day-old piglets, we
