AIMS: To evaluate the risk of alcohol consumption after acute coronary syndromes (ACS).
METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 6557 patients hospitalized for ACS at four Swiss centres were followed over 12 months. Weekly alcohol consumption was collected at baseline and 12 months. Binge drinking was defined as consumption of ≥6 units of alcohol on one occasion. Major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) were defined as a composite of cardiac death, myocardial infarction, stroke, or clinically indicated target vessel coronary revascularization. Cox regression analysis was performed to assess the risk

Early adolescent drinking onset is linked to myriad negative consequences. Using the National Consortium on Alcohol and NeuroDevelopment in Adolescence (NCANDA) baseline to year 8 data, this study (1) leveraged best subsets selection and Cox Proportional Hazards regressions to identify the most robust predictors of adolescent first and regular drinking onset, and (2) examined the clinical utility of drinking onset in forecasting later binge drinking and withdrawal effects. Baseline predictors included youth psychodevelopmental characteristics, cognition, brain structure, family, peer, and neig

BACKGROUND: Patients on antiretroviral therapy (ART) who drink alcohol are at risk of poor medication adherence and negative health outcomes.
OBJECTIVES: To explore the drinking behaviour of patients on ART and assess the associations between drinking, adherence to ART and viral load, and in particular factors associated with binge drinking (≥6 drinks per occasion) at least monthly.
METHODS: We recruited 623 HIV patients from six hospitals in the Tshwane metropole who scored positive on the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT-C) but were 'non-dependent' drinkers into a randomise

OBJECTIVES: To examine associations of baseline marital status and partnership-status trajectories with alcohol use, gender differences, and potential mediation by depressive symptoms and loneliness.
METHODS: Participants were 5071 adults (53.6% women; 65-85 years) in the 2016 and 2021 Gerontological Regional Database waves in Northern Sweden and Western Finland. Partnered status included marriage, cohabitation, or living-apart-together; unpartnered status included single, divorced, or widowed. Partnership-status trajectories distinguished those who remained or transitioned to unpartnered sta

AIMS: Excessive alcohol consumption is the third leading cause of death in the United States, yet most neighborhood research on drinking focuses on adolescents and emerging adults. We examined how neighborhood cohesion and length of residency jointly relate to past-year binge drinking and weekly heavy drinking among US adults aged 25-65.
METHODS: Using 2013-2018 National Health Interview Survey data (N = 78 398), we created a four-item neighborhood cohesion index (α = 0.90) assessing trust, willingness to help, shared values, and belonging. Residency was categorized as <4 years, 4-10 years, o

Many adolescents drink, and the rate of teenage pregnancy is increasing, yet the effect of drinking among pregnant teenagers has received little attention. We present a description of the drinking patterns of 124 pregnant teenagers attending a prenatal clinic in Pittsburgh. Sixty-nine percent of the women were African-American, and the average age was 16 years (range 13-18 years). Eighty-two percent drank the year before pregnancy, while 54%, 19%, and 15% drank during the first, second, and third trimesters, respectively. All substance use decreased between the first and third trimesters, with

Binge drinking is the consumption of large volumes of alcohol in short periods and exerts its effects on the central nervous system, including the hippocampus. We have previously shown that binge drinking alters mitochondrial dynamics and induces neuroinflammation in the hippocampus of adolescent rats. Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), is regularly linked to alcohol consumption and share mechanisms of brain damage. In this context, we hypothesized that adolescent binge drinking could prime the development of brain damage generated by mTBI. We found that alcohol binge drinking induced by the

PURPOSE: Research on ethnic differences in alcohol use has relied on broad groupings, potentially obscuring patterns across specific ethnic groups. Single data sources often include few participants from minoritised ethnic groups, a meta-analytic approach across data sources can overcome this limitation. This study examined, by ethnicity, the prevalence of i) alcohol use and binge-drinking, and associations of ii) alcohol use and binge-drinking with psychological distress.
METHODS: A secondary analysis of eight representative surveys in England (N=112,791) was conducted. Alcohol was assessed

BACKGROUND: To estimate the effect of social media use in 14 year olds on risk of and inequalities in alcohol use and binge drinking at 17 years.
METHODS: Using the UK-representative Millennium Cohort Study, the relationship between time spent on social media (assessed using questionnaires [n = 8987] and time-use-diaries [n = 2520]) with frequency of alcohol use in the past month and binge drinking was estimated using adjusted odds ratios (AORs) or adjusted relative risk ratios (ARRRs). Associations within low and high parental education groups were compared to examine effect modification. An

BACKGROUND: Liver damage is a serious and sometimes fatal consequence of long-term alcohol intake, which progresses from early-stage fatty liver (steatosis) to later-stage steatohepatitis with inflammation and fibrosis/necrosis. However, very little is known about earlier stages of liver disruption that may occur in problem drinkers, those who drink excessively but are not dependent on alcohol.
METHODS: We examined how repeated binge-like alcohol drinking in C57BL/6 mice altered liver function, as compared with a single binge-intake session and with repeated moderate alcohol consumption. We m

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) has a complicated pathophysiology. Binge ethanol intoxication may produce long-lasting changes throughout extended amygdala neurocircuitry including neuroinflammation, often leading to relapse. Therefore, understanding the role of binge drinking induced neuroinflammation on extended amygdala neurocircuitry is critically important for treatment. We sought to understand the role of neuroinflammation in a naturalized form of rodent binge ethanol drinking (Drinking in the Dark (DID)). In a 5-week DID paradigm, we demonstrate that acute intraperitoneal (IP) injection of t

BACKGROUND: Recent reports indicate a decline in rates of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) among Alaska Native and American Indian (AN/AI) infants. Nevertheless, AN/AI infants remain disproportionately impacted by the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure.
METHODS: AN/AI pregnant women in their 3rd trimester completed a questionnaire on demographic data and the amount and frequency of their alcohol consumption in the month prior to conception and during pregnancy. Differences across demographics and trimesters were tested with the Chi-square, Fisher's exact or McNemar's test as appropriate.

Adolescence is a period of ongoing brain maturation characterized by hierarchical changes in the functional and structural networks. For this reason, the young brain is particularly vulnerable to the toxic effects of alcohol. Nowadays, binge drinking is a pattern of alcohol consumption increasingly prevalent among adolescents. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the evolution of the functional and anatomical connectivity of the Default Mode Network (DMN) in young binge drinkers along two years. Magnetoencephalography signal during eyes closed resting state as well as Diffusion Tensor I

Peer and parent influences on alcohol use and related risky behaviors were examined in a sample of late adolescent (M = 17.3 years; SD = 1.11 years) urban youth. Participants (N = 400) completed an online measure assessing peer influences of alcohol use and alcohol offers, and parent influences of rules against alcohol use and perceived levels of emotional family support, relative to youths' alcohol use, binge drinking, alcohol-related consequences, and intentions to drink. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that increased peer alcohol use and alcohol offers were associated with youths'

OBJECTIVE: Although Black Americans have less alcohol use than non-Hispanic/Latine White Americans, they have comparable rates of binge drinking and alcohol use disorder. Moreover, Black Americans that smoke cigarettes appear at especially high risk for alcohol-related problems, highlighting a need to identify factors related to alcohol outcomes among Black Americans that smoke to better tailor treatments. Anxiety sensitivity (AS) and distress intolerance (DI) are associated with greater drinking and related problems. However, little research has tested the interactive effects of these risk fa

BACKGROUND: Predator stress (PS) is used to model trauma leading to post-traumatic stress disorder, and it increases ethanol drinking in a proportion of male and female rodents. The goals of the present studies were to identify male and female mice with prior binge drinking experience that exhibited sensitivity and resilience to PS-enhanced drinking and then to test two target molecules (corticotropin releasing factor receptor 1 [CRF-R1] antagonist NBI-27914 [NBI] and G-protein coupled receptor 39 [GPR39] agonist TC-G 1008 [TC-G]) for their ability to selectively reduce PS-enhanced drinking.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol consumption during pregnancy can cause fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and may increase the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, such as miscarriage and stillbirth. It is unknown whether legalization of cannabis influences alcohol consumption during pregnancy. This analysis estimates the association between state implementation of legal nonmedical cannabis retail sales and alcohol consumption during pregnancy.
METHODS: Data from the 2011 to 2023 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System were analyzed in 2023-2024. Adjusted prevalence ratios comparing current and binge d
