Coexistence of Condylomata Acuminata with Warty Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

INTRODUCTION: Condyloma acuminatum has previously been considered to be a benign growth with no malignant potential, but a review of the literature supports the concept that condylomata acuminata may precede or be associated with invasive squamous cell carcinoma (ISCC) or warty squamous cell carcinoma (WSCC). CASE REPORT: We present a clinical case of a 58-year old woman with large, slow-growing, exophytic tumor of external genitalia shaped like a cauliflower with the propagation to both legs and behind. We performed multiple biopsies to detect potential malignancy but malignancy was not conf

Human papillomavirus type-distribution in condylomata acuminata of mainland China: a meta-analysis.

The aim of this work was to study the human papillomavirus (HPV) type-distribution in condylomata acuminata (CA) of mainland China and to estimate the potential role of HPV prophylactic vaccines for CA in mainland China. Forty-three studies using polymerase chain reaction to detect HPV were included in this meta-analysis, and totally 5247 CA cases and 436 controls were included. The overall and type-specific prevalence of HPV 6, 11, 40, 42, 43, 44 were estimated using non-conditional logistic regression model. Overall HPV prevalence was 84.2% and 4.6% for CA and controls, respectively. Estimat

A randomized, controlled, molecular study of condylomata acuminata clearance during treatment with imiquimod.

Imiquimod, an immune response modifier, has been demonstrated to be safe and effective in the treatment of external genital and perianal warts caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). To identify the molecular mechanism(s) by which condylomata acuminata clear during topical treatment with imiquimod, wart skin biopsies were taken from patients before treatment, at treatment week 6, and at the end of treatment. Tissues were analyzed for HPV DNA and for mRNA of several cytokines and HPV gene products. Wart clearance was associated with evidence of tissue production of interferon-alpha, -beta, and -g

Detection of human papillomavirus L1 protein in condylomata acuminata from various anatomical sites.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Though human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA can be detected in the majority of condylomata acuminata, the major capsid protein of HPV (L1 protein) can be detected in only 10% to 50% of lesions in immunohistochemical assays. GOAL OF STUDY: To evaluate the association between anatomic location of genital HPV infections and the ability to detect HPV L1 protein. METHODS: Condylomata acuminata from 49 male and 51 female patients were evaluated for L1 protein by immunohistochemistry. Thirty of these lesions were vulvar; 20 were cervical; 1 was vaginal; 45 were penile; and 4 we

Treatment of advanced condylomata acuminata with semi-purified and purified human leukocyte interferon.

Twelve patients with advanced condylomata acuminata were treated by systemic human leukocyte interferon (IFN) therapy. Semi-purified and purified preparations were both able to affect condylomatous growth. Treatment of the patients at various periods of their disease resulted in one complete remission, 6 partial remissions, 4 minimal responses while one case showed progressive disease. Side-effects were unexpectedly common in these advanced patients and 4 of them had to stop IFN treatment.

Subclinical human papilloma virus infection in condylomata acuminata patients attending a VD clinic.

In 37 (77%) of 48 patients with external genital warts, application of 5% acetic acid revealed areas of acetowhite epithelium. The lesions were not clinically apparent before acetic acid was applied but were easily detected without the use of a colposcope. In a control group of 20 patients with chlamydial urethritis and no history of genital warts, none had acetowhite genital lesions. Histological examination of biopsy specimens from the flat acetowhite lesions showed HPV infection with koilocytosis in 29 (78%) and in 3 (8%) intra-epithelial neoplasia grade II-III. Using in situ hybridization

Condylomata acuminata in children: frequent association with human papillomaviruses responsible for cutaneous warts.

To identify the papillomavirus types associated with condylomata acuminata in children and to evaluate their mode of transmission, we studied 32 children with anogenital warts. External condylomata were found in 12 of their mothers and in 10 of their fathers. Ten mothers, including two without external lesions, had cervical condylomata. Blot hybridization studies disclosed a genital human papillomavirus (HPV) in 14 of 27 children (HPV-6 in 12 and HPV-11 in two) and in 8 of 14 patients (HPV-6 in all). HPV-6 was found in another child by the polymerase chain reaction technique. Infection occurre

Transcription of episomal papillomavirus DNA in human condylomata acuminata and Buschke-Löwenstein tumours.

Condylomata acuminata and Buschke-Löwenstein tumours were analysed for the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) transcripts. HPV DNA and RNA sequences were present in all 13 samples investigated. Ten contained HPV6 and three harboured HPV11. The HPV genomes were found exclusively as extrachromosomal circular molecules. In six biopsy specimens, viral RNA transcripts were not detectable by Northern blot analysis but could be demonstrated in dot blots. From seven HPV6-containing samples it was possible to obtain sufficient amounts of undegraded mRNA. We have found consistently one major species

Topical treatment of penile condylomata acuminata with colchicine at 48-72 hours intervals.

We previously demonstrated that 8% solutions of colchicine in ethanol eradicated penile warts in 36% of patients after a single application and in an additional 12% after a second application performed at least a week after the first. In the present study only 30% of 115 men were cured when penile warts were painted twice at intervals of 48 hours with 2% solutions and 72 hours with 4% and 8% solutions of colchicine. The lack of additive therapeutic effect accruing from the second application and the high frequency of intolerable side effects when using the latter treatment program indicate tha

Expression of human beta-defensin-2 and -3 in verrucae vulgares and condylomata acuminata.

The human beta defensins (hBDs) 2 and 3 contribute to the inducible antimicrobial peptides in human skin. Besides an important role in fighting bacteria, they may also exert antiviral function. Verrucae vulgares and condylomata acuminata are typical cutaneous viral diseases caused by different subtypes of the human papillomavirus. Their tendency for spontaneous regression could be caused by antiviral proteins like defensins. In a retoperspective study, we investigated lesions of verrucae vulgares and condylomata acuminata for the presence of hBD-2 and hBD-3 by immunohistochemistry. All of the

Topical cidofovir (HPMPC) is an effective adjuvant to surgical treatment of anogenital condylomata acuminata.

PURPOSE: Human papilloma virus infections of the anogenital region are very common and cause condylomata acuminata; cervical, penile, vulvar, or perianal intraepithelial neoplasia; and more rarely, invasive cancer. The currently available therapies often result in painful, extensive, slow-healing ulcerations and frequent early relapses. This study was aimed at determining the efficacy of topical application of the antiviral agent cidofovir at 1 percent. METHODS: Twenty patients treated with coagulations were compared with 27 patients treated with cidofovir. Lesions refractory to cidofovir wer

Factors associated with detection of human papillomavirus E4 and L1 proteins in condylomata acuminata.

The E4 and L1 gene products of human papillomavirus (HPV) types 6 and 11 are detected in variable amounts in condylomata acuminata. To study factors associated with detection of these proteins, biopsy specimens containing HPV-6 or -11 were analyzed for E4 protein, L1 protein, and HPV copy number. Seventeen of 50 women biopsied were pregnant. Nine men were also biopsied. Both the E4 and L1 proteins were found more frequently in lesions from pregnant women than from nonpregnant women or men. Both proteins were more often detected in lesions from women than from men. E4 gene products were more of

Treatment failure of genital condylomata acuminata in women: role of the male sexual partner.

The male sexual partners of women with genital condylomata acuminata are thought to be carriers of human papillomaviruses. It is therefore often recommended that both sexual partners be treated. We studied 360 women with genital warts to test the hypothesis that when the male partners of women with condylomata acuminata are treated, the treatment failure rate decreases. The male sexual partners of 180 of these women were examined and, if indicated, treated (treatment group). The 180 remaining male sexual partners were neither examined nor treated (control group). One hundred twenty-two (68%) m

Melanocytic proliferation in condylomata acuminata. A report of two cases and investigation by in situ hybridisation.

Two cases of melanocytic lesion occurring in condylomata acuminata are described. In situ hybridization with human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA probes specific for 6b, 11, 16, 18 revealed positivity with HPV6 and 11, in the non-dysplastic condylomata, and HPV 18 positivity in the case showing severe dysplasia. The HPV localization was confined to the superficial parakeratotic zones, remote from the melanocytic proliferation. The relationship between human papillomavirus and the melanocytic lesions is discussed.

Podophyllin versus scissor excision in the treatment of perianal condylomata acuminata: a prospective study.

Thirty-seven patients with previously untreated perianal condylomata acuminata were randomly treated by application of 25 per cent podophyllin or scissor excision. The result of treatment was assessed by an independent observer. At 6 weeks, scissor excision completely cleared the warts from 16 of 18 patients (89 per cent) compared with 15 of 19 patients (79 per cent) treated with podophyllin. Following complete clearance by surgery, two patients had recurrent warts at 18 weeks and a further single patient at 42 weeks, giving a cumulative recurrence rate of 19 per cent. In contrast, five of 15
