A study on the effect of lead on event-related potentials among lead-exposed workers.

OBJECTIVES: In order to clarify the effect of lead on higher cerebral functions, lead-exposed workers (Pb group) and controls were examined for event-related potentials. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Fourteen lead-exposed workers with a mean age of 57.1 yr (SD=4.27, range 48-64; lead concentration of whole blood ranged from 33 to 106 microg/dl with a mean of 58.6 and SD 28.6 microg/dl) and 19 age-matched control workers with a mean age of 57.3 yr (SD=4.80, range 48-65) were examined. Visual P300 was recorded by button pushing to the target image (minute checkerboard pattern, 20%), and the NO-GO poten

Event-related brain potential markers of visual and auditory perception: A useful tool for brain computer interface systems.

OBJECTIVE: A majority of BCI systems, enabling communication with patients with locked-in syndrome, are based on electroencephalogram (EEG) frequency analysis (e.g., linked to motor imagery) or P300 detection. Only recently, the use of event-related brain potentials (ERPs) has received much attention, especially for face or music recognition, but neuro-engineering research into this new approach has not been carried out yet. The aim of this study was to provide a variety of reliable ERP markers of visual and auditory perception for the development of new and more complex mind-reading systems f

Dysfunctional information processing in individuals with acute exposure to sexual abuse: An ERP study.

Acute stress disorder (ASD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may occur after traumatic event and also cause significant life time impairment. P300 event-related potential (ERP) is a potential biological marker for PTSD and can reflect cognitive impairment in information processing and attention. Despite the usefulness of ERP, there are few attempts to reveal relationships between ASD and P300. In the present study, we aimed to determine if the P300 of the patients who were the victims of sexual abuse reflected the quantitative trait of ASD or if P300 is applicable as a state marker for

Virtual reality-induced motion sickness under autonomous vehicle driving conditions: EEG-based recognition and ANOVA analysis of various driving modes.

Motion sickness induced by autonomous driving technology poses a new challenge to the emerging sustainable transportation systems. This study investigates the association between motion sickness in autonomous driving and electroencephalogram (EEG) signals under three laboratory-based simulated scenarios: manual driving, resting, and autonomous driving. EEG data were recorded from participants in each mode, alongside the collection of motion sickness symptoms through questionnaires. Data analysis and exploration were conducted to explore the relationship between autonomous driving-induced motio

Modulation of the brain activity in outcome evaluation by interpersonal relationship: an ERP study.

Previous event-related potential (ERP) studies employing monetary gambling tasks have demonstrated that the brain responds differentially not only to one's own gain and loss but also to the others' gambling outcomes. Empathy and motivational significance are implicated in the processes of outcome evaluation. This study is to explore to what extent the brain activity is modulated by the interpersonal relationship between the individual and the other agent, who can be a friend or a stranger. Brain potentials were recorded while the participant observed reward feedback to his/her own, his/her fri

Acute Effects of Aerobic Exercise on Risky Decision Making and Reward Processing in Young Adults.

Acute exercise is suggested to elicit benefits for cool executive function, but the sensitivity of its hot components, such as risky decision making, to exercise remains unclear. However, improvements in risky decision making are relevant due to its predictive value for engagement in unhealthy behaviors in young adults in particular. We investigated the acute effects of aerobic exercise on risky decision making, its underlying neurocognitive processes (i.e., reward processing) and response inhibition. 33 female and 27 male participants (aged 24.0 ± 2.9 years) were randomly allocated to an inte

Fluid intelligence and neural mechanisms of emotional conflict adaptation.

Emotional conflict adaptation is an important process of cognitive control in human behavioral regulation. The face-word Stroop task and the emotional Simon task were employed to explore the correlation between fluid intelligence and neural processes of emotional conflict adaptation using event-related potential (ERP) techniques. Thirty-two intellectually average children (mean age of 10.72 years) and thirty-four intellectually gifted children (mean age of 10.86 years) participated in the present study. The behavioral results indicated that both intellectually gifted and average children showe

P300, not feedback error-related negativity, manifests the waiting cost of receiving reward information.

Previous studies have investigated how temporal discounting influences reward processing in the human brain; however, it remains unclear whether a short delay in presenting an outcome affects brain activity related to reward processing that is indexed by the two event-related potential components: the feedback error-related negativity (fERN) and P300 components. The present study used a revised simple gambling task and manipulated the waiting time before reward presentation. Behavioral data showed that participants did not respond differently between conditions; however, they reported more neg

Right frontal cortex generates reward-related theta-band oscillatory activity.

When participants in a gambling game are given feedback as to whether they won or lost the previous bet, a series of stereotypical brain electrical responses can be observed in the electroencephalogram (EEG) and the stimulus-locked Event-Related Potential (ERP). These include the Feedback-Related Mediofrontal Negativity (FRN), a posterior P300, and a feedback-induced increase in power at the theta (4 to 8 Hz) band over frontal scalp. Although the generators of the FRN and P300 have been studied previously, little is known about the generator of feedback-induced theta. We employed a gambling ga

When people matter more than money: an ERPs study.

In the present study, we showed that, in a social gambling task, individuals are influenced more by the type of social interaction than by the pattern of gains and losses. More precisely, the neural responses, as well as the level of pleasantness/unpleasantness following gains and losses, are modulated by social interaction factors. Here we present an Event-Related Potentials (ERPs) study in which three groups of participants were compared. Subjects were engaged in gambling tasks differing with regard to social factors: in a first condition, there was no social context; in a second condition,

Investigating the generators of the scalp recorded visuo-verbal P300 using cortically constrained source localization.

Considerable ambiguity exists about the generators of the scalp recorded P300, despite a vast body of research employing a diverse range of methodologies. Previous investigations employing source localization techniques have been limited largely to equivalent current dipole models, with most studies identifying medial temporal and/or hippocampal sources, but providing little information about the contribution of other cortical regions to the generation of the scalp recorded P3. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded from 5 subjects using a 124-channel sensor array during the performance

Neural coding of cooperative vs. affective human interactions: 150 ms to code the action's purpose.

The timing and neural processing of the understanding of social interactions was investigated by presenting scenes in which 2 people performed cooperative or affective actions. While the role of the human mirror neuron system (MNS) in understanding actions and intentions is widely accepted, little is known about the time course within which these aspects of visual information are automatically extracted. Event-Related Potentials were recorded in 35 university students perceiving 260 pictures of cooperative (e.g., 2 people dragging a box) or affective (e.g., 2 people smiling and holding hands)

Effects of borderline personality disorder features and a family history of alcohol or drug dependence on P300 in adolescents.

Decrements in P300 amplitude have been associated with familial risk for alcoholism as well as several other psychiatric disorders characterized by disinhibited behavior. The present study examined the P300 in relation to Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) features in adolescents with a paternal history of alcohol or drug dependence. One hundred and seventy-five males and females, aged 14-20, were assigned to groups based on BPD features (BPD+ vs. BPD-), family history of substance dependence (negative FH-, alcohol FHA, drug FHD) and gender. BPD features were assessed using the Structured C

Association of Cardiac Autonomic Dysfunction and Cognitive Impairment With Disease Severity in Parkinson's Disease: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the presence of both motor and non-motor features. Although cardiac autonomic imbalance and cognitive derangement are well documented in PD, their relationship with the severity of the disease has not been explored using a multimodal approach. Objective This study aimed to assess the correlation between cardiac autonomic function, cognitive parameters (P300 and reaction time), and biochemical markers (homocysteine (HCY) and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG)) with disease severity in individuals with mild-to

Stage-specific changes in schematic facial emotion recognition following childhood trauma: an ERP study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma has been linked to emotional face processing, but its association with stages of emotional face processing remains unclear. The present study used schematic emotional facial cues as simplified stimuli and event-related potentials to examine early face sensitive activity and later evaluative processing within this stimulus context. METHODS: Adults with and without childhood trauma completed an emotion classification task with happy, sad, and neutral schematic faces during EEG recording. Reaction times and accuracy were analyzed as behavioral measures. ERP analyses

Attentional Bias Predicts Increased Reward Salience and Risk Taking in Bipolar Disorder.

BACKGROUND: There is amassing evidence that risky decision-making in bipolar disorder is related to reward-based differences in frontostriatal regions. However, the roles of early attentional and later cognitive processes remain unclear, limiting theoretical understanding and development of targeted interventions. METHODS: Twenty euthymic bipolar disorder and 19 matched control participants played a Roulette task in which they won and lost money. Event-related potentials and source analysis were used to quantify predominantly sensory-attentional (N1), motivational salience (feedback-related n

Assessment of biocorrelates for brain involvement in female patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Central nervous system (CNS) abnormalities are rare in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Direct studies done to investigate brain involvement in RA are few or even absent. We hypothesized that CNS is not excluded from the inflammatory disease process in RA. Thus we systematically investigated markers of brain involvement in 55 females with RA. We examined patients' cognition using battery of sensitive psychometric testing [Mini-Mental State Examination, Stanford-Binet test (fourth edition) and Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised] and by recording P300 component of event-related potentials, a

Event related potentials in hypothyroidism.

Central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction is an important consequence of thyroid hormone deficiency Several studies using objective behavioral measures reported that cognition is impaired in patients with hypothyroidism. The aim of the present study is to evaluate objectively the functional changes in the nervous system and possible cognitive effects of hypothyroidism by using event related potentials (ERP) in order to determine the frequencies of these changes in patients with hypothyroidism. Forty-two patients (3 males, 39 females) (mean age: 40 +/- 11) with newly diagnosed primary hypothyroi

ERP P300 and brain magnetic resonance imaging in patients with vibroacoustic disease.

INTRODUCTION: Subjects occupationally exposed to large pressure amplitude (> or = 90 dB SPL) and low frequency (< or = 500 Hz) (LPALF) noise for long term periods (>10 yr) can develop vibroacoustic disease (VAD). One of the earliest complaints of VAD patients deals with memory and attention disturbances. On the other hand, in over 50% of these patients, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the CNS revealed cortical atrophy and dilation of the perivascular spaces, and small hyperintense lesions in T2 of the cerebral white matter, basal ganglia, and brainstem. The purpose of this study is to inve
