Characteristics of Latinas in Puerto Rico and the US mainland receiving teriparatide in the DANCE observational study.

OBJECTIVE: The Direct Assessment of Nonvertebral Fractures in Community Experience (DANCE) study investigated the use of teriparatide in men and women with osteoporosis in the United States (US) and Puerto Rico (PR). In a sub-analysis, we evaluated whether the baseline characteristics of Latinas differed from those of white women in the study population and whether any patient attributes affected physicians' decisions to prescribe teriparatide. METHODS: We assessed 3 patient cohorts treated with teriparatide 20 microg once daily for up to 24 months: 1) PR Latinas, 2) US Latinas, and 3) white

Race and the spatialisation of risk during the 2013-2016 West African Ebola epidemic.

This paper examines the spatial navigation of risk by international health responders working in Ebola Treatment Centres (ETCs) during the West African Ebola epidemic. Drawing on Black studies and geographies it argues for a race-conscious analysis of spatial strategies of risk aversion in order to highlight the geographical, postcolonial and racial inequalities at the heart of the West African Ebola response. Based on interviews with international health responders to Liberia and Sierra Leone, it argues that the spatial organisation of ETCs perpetuated non-equivalence between Black and white

Debating Diseases in Nineteenth-Century Colombia: Causes, Interests, and the Pasteurian Therapeutics.

This article explores the medical conceptualization of the causes of diseases in nineteenth-century Colombia. It traces the history of some of the pathologies that were of major concern among nineteenth-century doctors: periodic fevers (yellow fever and malaria), continuous fevers (typhoid fever), and leprosy (Greek elephantiasis). By comparing the transforming conceptualizations of these diseases, this article shows that their changing pattern, the idea of climatic determinism of diseases (neo-Hippocratism and medical geography), the weak standing of the medical community in Colombian society

"A study in nature": the Tuskegee experiments and the New South plantation.

This essay rethinks the Tuskegee Syphilis Experiments in light of a long history of experimentation in plantation geographies of the U.S. South. Turning to late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century discourses of the New South and to Booker T. Washington's Tuskegee Institute, this essay illuminates the extension of the laboratory life of the plantation into the twentieth century. The focus on personal hygiene at the Tuskegee Institute opened the door for alliances with public health initiatives early on, making the school's student population as well as residents of surrounding counties subj

The anthropogenic fingerprint on emerging infectious diseases.

Emerging infectious diseases are a hallmark of the Anthropocene1,2. Human-driven ecosystem changes and human-wildlife-livestock contact can drive the emergence of zoonotic and vector-borne diseases3-5, but how much these processes shape landscapes of outbreak risk is poorly understood, beyond a few well-studied systems6-8. Here we consolidate 58,319 outbreak event records for 32 diseases and systematically test how 16 hypothesized social and environmental drivers impact outbreak geographies, while accounting for detection and reporting biases. We show that outbreak risks are typically highest

Protocol for spatial prediction of soil transmitted helminth prevalence in the Western Pacific region using a meta-analytical approach.

BACKGROUND: Soil transmitted helminth (STH) infections are estimated to impact 24% of the world's population and are responsible for chronic and debilitating morbidity. Disadvantaged communities are among the worst affected and are further marginalized as infection prevalence fuels the poverty cycle. Ambitious targets have been set to eliminate STH infections, but accurate epidemiological data will be required to inform appropriate interventions. This paper details the protocol for an analysis that aims to produce spatial prediction mapping of STH prevalence in the Western Pacific Region (WPR)

Do patterns of past asbestos use and production reflect current geographic variations of cancer risk?: mesothelioma in Ontario and British Columbia, Canada.

PURPOSE: Canada was a major global asbestos producer and consumer. Geographic patterns of Canadian asbestos use and mesothelioma, a highly fatal cancer linked to asbestos exposure, have not been previously reported. This study summarized key trends in mesothelioma incidence by geography and time in two Canadian provinces, Ontario and British Columbia (BC), and explored how past workforce characteristics and geographic trends in asbestos production and use may shape variations in regional rates of mesothelioma. METHODS: We report trends in mesothelioma incidence (1993-2016) for Ontario and Bri

Lifestyle alters GUT-bacteria function: Linking immune response and host.

Microbiota in human is a "mixture society" of different species (i.e. bacteria, viruses, funguses) populations with a different way of relationship classification to Human. Human GUT serves as the host of the majority of different bacterial populations (GUT flora, more than 500 species), which are with us ("from the beginning") in an innate manner known as the commensal (no harm to each other) and symbiotic (mutual benefit) relationship. A homeostatic balance of host-bacteria relationship is very important and vital for a normal health process. However, this beneficial relationship and delicat

The Influence of Season on Endocrine Testing in Equids.

Endocrine function in equids is strongly influenced by season, with photoperiod as the primary driver and additional modulation by factors such as breed, geography, age, and nutrition. These seasonal effects have important implications for the interpretation of endocrine diagnostic tests. Circannual rhythms influence pituitary activity, resulting in predictable seasonal variation in adrenocorticotropic hormone concentrations and forming the basis for seasonally adjusted diagnostic thresholds for pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction. Seasonal effects on insulin dynamics are less understood but

Impact of Social and Structural Determinants of Health on Bladder Cancer Outcomes: Focus on Non-Muscle-Invasive Disease.

Non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) requires repeated procedures, long-term surveillance, and sustained access to urologic care. Outcomes are highly sensitive to health disparities. This article examines how social determinants of health including insurance status, socioeconomic factors, gender, ethnicity, geography, and care fragmentation can impact NMIBC care. Delays in hematuria evaluation, underuse and inequitable distribution of intravesical therapy, and decreased surveillance adherence contribute to higher recurrence, progression, and worse quality-of-life outcomes. These disparit

TRENDS IN THE ULCERATIVE COLITIS TO CROHN'S DISEASE INCIDENCE RATIO ARE DISTINCT BETWEEN EPIDEMIOLOGIC STAGES OF INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE.

INTRODUCTION: The ulcerative colitis (UC) to Crohn's disease (CD) incidence ratio varies across geography and time. METHODS: We analyzed UC:CD incidence ratios across three epidemiologic stages using generalized additive models for location, shape, and scale and pooled average annual percent changes (AAPCs) by meta-analysis. RESULTS: Ratios significantly decreased: median 3.62 in stage 1, 1.82 in stage 2, 1.55 in stage 3; the incidence ratio stabilized in stage 3 (AAPC: -0.12; 95%CI: -0.66, 0.42). DISCUSSION: Decreasing UC:CD incidence ratios signal a rising burden of CD, underscoring the n

Cryptogenic Fusobacterium liver abscesses in two healthy, young adult males.

INTRODUCTION: It is rare to have Fusobacterium PLAs without concomitant Lemiere's syndrome. CASE DESCRIPTION: Two healthy, young males with a history of binge drinking developed cryptogenic Fusobacterium liver abscesses, but without Lemiere's syndrome. We highlight differences in disease severity, bacterial species, and management. DISCUSSION: Further research is needed to determine if Fusobacterium may cause PLAs in young men who consume alcohol. Source control in small abscesses may be more important than previously considered. Given the similarities in patient geography and hospitalizatio

Unveiling the In Vitro Anti-Biofilm Potential of Lactobacillus rhamnosus Against Saliva-Based Pathogens: A Gender-Age-Area Specific Study.

Probiotics, like lactobacilli and bifidobacteria, benefit health by populating the digestive system, which houses numerous microbial species. Studies demonstrate their ability to inhibit biofilm formation, crucial in preventing oral conditions like dental caries. Our research evaluated a probiotic strain's anti-biofilm efficacy against oral pathogens in 45 individuals' saliva, alongside its biofilm-forming potential. Analysis revealed significant biofilm inhibition in 36 samples. Comparisons based on age, gender, and geography further supported these findings. We propose further exploration of

Epidemiology of hepatocellular carcinoma.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common histologic type of primary liver cancer, accounting for between 85% and 90% of these malignancies. The overall prognosis of patients with liver cancer is poor, and an understanding of this disease and its risk factors is crucial for screening at-risk individuals, early recognition, and timely diagnosis. Most HCCs arise in the background of chronic liver disease caused by hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, and chronic excessive alcohol intake. These underlying causes are characterized by marked variations in geography, gender, and other well-

[The frequency of malignant lymphoma subtypes based on World Health Organization (WHO) classification].

Diagnosis of malignant lymphoma is based on the 4th edition of World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Tumours of Haematopoietic and Lymphoid Tissues. The frequency of malignant lymphoma subtypes depends on age, race and geography. In Asian countries, Hodgkin lymphoma and follicular lymphoma are less frequent compared to Western countries. However, the number of patients with follicular lymphoma is now increasing in Japan. In contrast, in Japan, adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma is more frequent than in Western and other Asian countries, because it relates to distribution of human T-cel

Survey of ophthalmic conditions in rural Lesotho.

The first survey of ocular problems in rural Lesotho was conducted by a visiting eye team and consisted of an examination of 1266 ophthalmic clinic patients at 15 representative sites throughout the country. The most common ocular conditions encountered were: conjunctivitis, refractive error, vernalis, senile cataract, glaucoma, corneal opacities and trauma. This disease pattern differs from most developing African nations for reasons of climate, geography and diet. The absence of disciform macular degeneration, narrow-angle glaucoma, and rarity of retinal detachment was noted. The educational

A systematic review of spatial epidemiological modeling approaches applied during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: A wide range of epidemiological modeling approaches have been applied to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, which presents an opportunity to assess common approaches applied to specific research questions. Spatial models interrogate how heterogeneities and host movement dynamics influence local and regional patterns of disease, issues that were of great interest for understanding and controlling SARS-CoV-2. OBJECTIVE: Here, we present a systematic review of spatial epidemiological modeling approaches of SARS-CoV-2. We describe common themes and highlight unique strategies, providing a founda

Maternal Cytomegalovirus Serology Results by Geographic Region in a Large Multicenter US Study.

Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection, due to both nonprimary and primary maternal infection, affects nearly 1% of neonates. In conducting a randomized trial of hyperimmune globulin for prevention of congenital CMV infection, we screened over 200,000 pregnancies across the United States for evidence of prior or primary CMV infection and evaluated their geographic variation. Although the majority were seropositive, seroprevalence and primary infection risk varied significantly by geographic region, with seroprevalence the highest (88%) and primary infection (0.2%) the lowest in the Southwe

Brachial plexus birth injuries: a multi-speciality approach. Commentary and opinions.

The management of brachial plexus birth injuries (BPBI) remains controversial and ever evolving. In this article, studies are examined to provide further insight into the ongoing controversies and debates surrounding BPBI. The articles are diverse and examine the topics of aetiology, demographics, reliability versus accuracy of measurements and surgical management. The management of BPBI may differ depending on resources. Outcome measures may also vary depending on geography. Future research should focus on developing consensus-validated measures and reproducible surgical techniques. These can
