Reasons for Undergoing CT During Childhood: Can CT-Exposed and CT-Naive Populations Be Compared?

Several epidemiological studies suggested an increased risk of cancer and other tumors in individuals undergoing computed tomography (CT) examination during childhood; however, it was questioned whether the group undergoing CT was comparable to that not undergoing CT. To address this issue, we investigated the reasons for undergoing CT in 763 children aged 0 to 19 years in 2013. Their medical records were fully evaluated and symptoms, underlying conditions, reasons for CT, and clinical courses after CT were investigated. Among the 763 children, 66.1% underwent repeat CT after the first examina

From Uncommon Infection to Multi-Cranial Palsy: Malignant External Otitis Insights.

PURPOSE: The progression of the otitic infectious process toward diseases of particular severity is often unpredictable, just as it is challenging to manage the patient over time, even after the apparent resolution of the disease. We aim to define a radiological reading key that allows us to correctly and promptly treat the disease, avoiding the possible severe complications. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of 13 cases of basal cranial osteomyelitis (SBO) due to malignant external otitis, by the ENT Department of the University of Catania. Through a standardized approach and follo

Analysis of lncRNA and mRNA Transcriptomes Expression in Thyroid Cancer Tissues Among Patients With Exposure of Medical Occupational Radiation.

BACKGROUND: Occupational exposure of radiation among medical radiation workers contributes to the subsequent increased risk of thyroid cancer. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are emerging as important regulators of cancer biology. However, little is known about lncRNA expression in thyroid cancer tissues from patients who are exposed to medical occupational radiation. The purpose of this study is to reveal the transcriptomes difference between thyroid cancer tissues and adjacent nonneoplastic thyroid tissues. METHODS: Microarray technology was used in this study. Quantitative reverse transcript

Novel Route of Synthesis of PCL-CuONPs Composites With Antimicrobial Properties.

Nanoparticles of metals can be toxic to bacteria, showing biocidal activities at low concentrations. Metal, oxide, or compounds based on copper are applied like antimicrobial agents. The capacity of integration of metallic nanoparticles in polymer matrices has improved the antimicrobial behavior, resulting in the search for composites with increased bactericidal properties. A polycaprolactone (PCL) film polymer with copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) was prepared. Dynamic light scattering analysis showed the sizes from 88 to 97 nm of CuONPs. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed CuONPs

2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin and TGFβ3-Mediated Mouse Embryonic Palatal Mesenchymal Cells.

2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) is a well-known environmental teratogenic effector for cleft palate. Transforming growth factor 3 (TGF-β3) is an essential growth factor for palatogenesis. The objective of this study is to clarify the effects of TCDD and TGF-β3 in mouse embryonic palatal mesenchymal (MEPM) cells. The effects of 10 nM TCDD, 10 ng/mL TGF-β3, or a combination of 10 nM TCDD and 10 ng/mL TGF-β3 on MEPM cells were revealed by cell and biological methods. With the increase in TCDD (0.5-10 nM), the expression of TGF-β3 increased, but at TCDD concentrations greater than 10 nM

The Potential Effect of Different Doses of Ionizing Radiation on Genes and Disease.

AIM: The chromosomal aberrations induced by radiation appear about nonrandomly distributed across the whole genome. Previous studies have shown that chromosomes with high DNA content are less frequently involved in the formation of symmetrical translocations and dicentric chromosomes than expected, whereas smaller chromosomes are more frequently involved. We hypothesized that these translocation regions are linked to radiation sensitivity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We investigated the frequencies of chromosome translocations induced by radiation exposure and adjusted the results according to chr

Exosomes: A Novel Therapeutic Agent for Cartilage and Bone Tissue Regeneration.

Despite traditionally treating autologous and allogeneic transplantation and emerging tissue engineering (TE)-based therapies, which have commonly performed in clinic for skeletal diseases, as the "gold standard" for care, undesirably low efficacy and other complications remain. Therefore, exploring new strategies with better therapeutic outcomes and lower incidences of unfavorable side effect is imperative. Recently, exosomes, secreted microvesicles of endocytic origin, have caught researcher's eyes in tissue regeneration fields, especially in cartilage and bone-related regeneration. Multiple

Radon Therapy for Autoimmune Diseases Pemphigus and Diabetes: 2 Case Reports.

We report on the application of radon therapy to relieve the suffering of 2 patients with autoimmune diseases, one with pemphigus with an old myocardial infarction and diabetes mellitus and the other with type I diabetes. We include a lengthy discussion of the biological mechanisms that we believe produced the observed benefits. During the 6 to 9 months of the treatments, the marker values decreased to the upper limit of their normal ranges and the symptoms of the diseases were alleviated. Disorders of Th1/Th2 balance are implicated in the onset of many diseases, including autoimmune diseases.

Necrotizing Fasciitis: Low-Dose Radiotherapy as a Potential Adjunct Treatment.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rapidly spreading bacterial infection causing extensive tissue necrosis and destruction. Despite appropriate therapy, the disease results in significant morbidity/mortality and substantial treatment costs. Several studies published in the early 1900s demonstrated the effective use of low-dose X-ray radiotherapy (RT) for the treatment of many diverse inflammatory conditions and diseases (eg, gas gangrene, sinus infections, arthritis, tendonitis, and serious inflammatory lung conditions). The mechanism by which therapeutic RT doses produce positive patient outcome

Dose-Dependent Antifibrotic Effect of Chrysin on Regression of Liver Fibrosis: The Role in Extracellular Matrix Remodeling.

Liver fibrosis represents an overaccumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM). This study was designed to investigate the effect of chrysin on established ECM overproduction in carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) mouse liver fibrosis. Experimental fibrosis was induced by intraperitoneal injection of 2 mL/kg CCl4 twice a week, for 7 weeks. Mice were orally treated with 3 doses of chrysin (5,7-dihydroxyflavone). For the assessment of the spontaneous reversion of fibrosis, CCl4-treated mice were investigated after 2 weeks of recovery time. Silymarin was used as a standard of liver protection. In fibrotic l
