Redox-active metal ions such as Fe(II)\(III) and Cu(I)\(II) have been proposed to activate reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) and thus, perpetuate oxidative damage. In this study, simultaneous adsorption of copper ions and humic acid (HA) from Aldrich onto an activated carbon is investigated. It is found that the HA adsorption in the absence of copper decreases as the pH is increased. It leads to a reduction of 34.7% in the specific surface area of carbon. There exists a critical concentration (CC) of HA for copper adsorption. At HA concentrations < CC, a decrease in copper adsorption is observed; however, the HA improves the adsorption at HA concentrations > CC. Photoreceptor cells of the pineal organ of river lamprey, Lampetra japonica, showed hyperpolarizing light responses associated with a decrease in membrane resistance. Binding of [3H](R,S)-alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid ([3H]AMPA) to quisqualate receptors in the presence of SCN- ions produced curvilinear Scatchard plots. Kinetic investigations of [3H]AMPA binding showed that the curvilinearity cannot be explained by assuming binding to two separate binding sites or by considering it due to cooperative interaction. A more likely explanation is that the quisqualate receptors exist in two states, one with high and one with low affinity for [3H]AMPA. Chaotropic ions change the relaxation constant between the two states.

Bis-(5-sulphosalicylato)-diaquo chelates of VO(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Fe(II) and Mn(II) exerted antifungal activities. The chelates have been characterised for elemental, thermal and infra-red spectral studies and were found to be more fungicidal than the chelating agent. The antifungal activity was found to be in the order: Cu(II) congruent to Ni(II) greater than Co(II) greater than Fe(II) greater than Mn(II) greater than VO(II).
