Music and anxiety in Williams syndrome: a harmonious or discordant relationship?

In this two-part study, we assessed musical involvements in two samples of persons with Williams syndrome compared to others with mental retardation and also related musicality to anxiety and fears in Study 2. Relative to others with mental retardation, those with Williams syndrome were more likely to take music lessons, play an instrument, and have higher ratings of musical skills. In the Williams syndrome groups only, fewer externalizing symptoms were associated with listening to music, whereas less anxiety and fewer fears were associated with the frequency, duration, and skill in producing

The effects of music on clients with learning disabilities: a literature review.

The aim of this paper was to promote the use of musical interventions with clients with learning disabilities. Musical interventions with this group of clients were found to be effective in reducing self-injurious behaviour, aggression and other behaviour, which challenge the service providers. Music was also found to have the potential to improve the communication skills of clients and to maintain their psychological well being. A review of the literature shows that music, though not widely used in the field of learning disabilities, can be an effective medium through which the quality of lif

The effects of gender and music video imagery on sexual attitudes.

This study examined the influence of gender and exposure to gender-stereo-typed music video imagery on sexual attitudes (adversarial sexual beliefs, acceptance of rape myths, acceptance of interpersonal violence, and gender role stereotyping). A group of 44 U.S. college students were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 groups that viewed either a video portraying stereotyped sexual imagery or a video that excluded all sexual images. Exposure to traditional sexual imagery had a significant main effect on attitudes about adversarial sexual relationships, and gender had main effects on 3 of 4 sexual atti

[Listening to music in hearing loss with and without a hearing aid].

By means of a questionnaire it was investigated how in individuals who had previously had normal hearing deafness influences their pleasure and habits in listening to music, and which role a hearing aid can play in this respect. Out of 330 questionnaires returned, 206 could be statistically evaluated. 95% reported that formerly they had liked music, light music coming from the radio being the most frequently mentioned type of music and medium. 36% had formerly played an instrument or had enjoyed singing. 79% feel that their deafness has affected their pleasure in listening to music. Most commo

[Musical murmurs: phonocardiographic, echocardiographic and Doppler echocardiographic study].

Musical murmurs are probably related to the vibrations of some structures in the cardiovascular system, and this may be reflected in the characteristic stripes which are recorded by the fast Fourier transformation (FFT) of the pulsed Doppler echocardiography (so-called FFT stripe). In the present study, we demonstrated new stripes by color Doppler echocardiography, which were composed of multiple warm and cold color bands which we termed color Doppler stripes (CD stripe). An experiment was performed to obtain Doppler signals from the surface of a vibrating tonometer at a frequency of 128 Hz. W

Effect of music on anxiety among adolescents: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a developmental period marked by heightened vulnerability to anxiety, driven by academic pressure, social expectations, and rapid emotional changes. Music-based interventions have been examined as accessible, low-risk approaches for anxiety reduction; however, existing evidence remains conceptually fragmented and methodologically diverse. METHODS: This systematic review followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines. A comprehensive search across PubMed, APA PsycINFO, Scopus, Web of Science, and CNKI identified randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-experimental studies exa

Music and dementia care: Future directions for research and innovation.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive decline and dementia can have a major impact on individuals, families, societies and economies. While there are currently no cures for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, and available treatments only modestly slow early progression, there is enormous scope to improve cognitive health and support individuals emotionally and psychologically as they age. By developing and implementing research-informed, music-based approaches in dementia care, quality of life could be significantly improved for those living with dementia and their families. OBJECTIVE: An early-stage

Palliative Music Therapy: Disciplinary Identity and Challenges for Clinical Integration.

Music therapy in palliative care (PC) has accumulated a growing evidence base over recent decades, yet its integration into interdisciplinary teams remains inconsistent. This article argues that the gap between evidence and practice reflects, at least in part, a deeper conceptual problem: while foundational contributions to the field have proposed definitions, frameworks, and scope-of-practice models for music therapy in PC, these efforts have not yet translated into broad institutional consolidation of its disciplinary identity. We examine how categorical labels such as "complementary," "adju

Dynamic representation of music induced emotion regulation and neuroendocrine responses.

INTRODUCTION: This study introduces a novel methodology for dynamically representing the regulation of music-induced emotions and associated neuroendocrine responses. The research addresses the limitations of traditional approaches, which often fail to capture the intricate and dynamic interactions between musical stimuli and the resulting emotional and physiological changes. METHODS: To overcome these challenges, we propose the Componen tEnergy Temporal model, which integrates three key components: the Component Interaction Resolver, the Energy Conserving Adapter, and the Temporal Forecast A

Does Music Experience Impact the Vascular Endothelial Response to Singing?

Background: Vascular endothelial function is closely related to brain health, especially in individuals with cardiovascular risk factors. In a randomized, crossover clinical trial (NCT04121741), we have previously shown that 30 min of singing improves microvascular endothelial function in older adults with coronary artery disease. Here, we report on secondary and exploratory analyses, including (1) changes in cortisol and cytokine levels and their impact on vascular endothelial function, and (2) the impact of personal music experience on vascular function. Methods: Participants had three study

Brain-Body Coupling in Listening to Metronomic Sounds and Music.

Wearables continue to expand their ability to sample more signals from the brain and body while reducing form factors and limiting on-device computing to meet real-world comfort and power constraints. Where evolving multimodal sensing platforms can combine electrophysiological (ExG), optical, chemical, and mechanical sensors for holistic brain-body state estimation, understanding of cross-modal coupling mechanisms remains limited. Here, we collect and analyze bio-signals in a brain-body coupling experiment using simultaneous electroencephalogram (EEG), electrocardiogram (ECG), and respiratory

Preferences and Attitudes Toward Music in Nonclinical Uses of Psychedelics.

BACKGROUND: The resurgent interest in psychedelic-assisted therapy for conditions like depression, end-of-life anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder is generating highly promising results. Within this therapeutic context, music's role is multifaceted, seen as a critical environmental component and even akin to a hidden therapist. Contemporary clinical protocols often advocate for music that is lyric-free and unfamiliar, yet these guidelines are based on limited empirical evidence. METHODS: Our study, drawing on data from over 2,000 participants in the Canadian Psychedelic Survey (CPS),

Personal versus therapist perioperative music intervention: a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Music interventions can alleviate patient anxiety and improve post-surgical satisfaction. However, it remains uncertain whether personal music preferences affect efficacy. The authors tested whether personal music intervention with patient-selected songs played ad libitum is more effective than standard therapist-designed treatment with classical music. METHODS: A prospective, parallel-group, single-blinded, randomized controlled trial with 229 participants (aged 18-60 years) previously scheduled for elective surgery. Data analyses followed a modified intention-to-treat principl

Music and well-being in carceral settings: a scoping review.

Well-being is defined as the multi-dimensional experience of positive emotions, as well as life satisfaction, autonomy, and purpose. This scoping review examines the impact of musical practices on the well-being of incarcerated individuals and uniquely contributes to the literature by focusing on the relationship between music and power in carceral settings and by expounding on the ways in which musical practices both facilitate and inhibit experiences of well-being. Our review contributes to this body of literature by proposing three distinct ways musical practices may affect well-being: (1)
