The Intra-rater reliability and validity of ultrasonography in the evaluation of hypertrophic scars caused by burns.

PURPOSE: Hypertrophic scars that occur after burns are less flexible and less elastic than normal skin. Objective measurement tools are required to assess hypertrophic scars after thermal injury. Cutometer® MPA 580 has been widely used for evaluating the properties of hypertrophic scars. Ultrasonography can evaluate elasticity, stiffness, and structure of tissues simultaneously using elastography and B-mode. This study aimed to investigate the intra-rater reliability and validity of elastography to visualize hypertrophic scars. METHODS: Sixteen participants with a total of 96 scars were evalu

The challenge of measuring spinopelvic parameters: inter-rater reliability before and after minimally invasive lumbar spondylodesis.

BACKGROUND: The common manual measurement technique of spinal sagittal alignment on X-rays is susceptible to rater-dependent variability, which has not been adequately considered in previous publications. This study investigates the effect of those variations in the characterization of patients receiving lumbar spondylodesis. METHODS: General alignment parameters on pre- and postoperative X-rays were evaluated by four raters in 43 prospectively sampled patients undergoing monolevel spondylodesis. The Intra-class Correlation Coefficient (ICC) for each rater pair and all raters together was cal

OF-Pelvis classification of osteoporotic sacral and pelvic ring fractures.

OBJECTIVES: Osteoporotic fractures of the pelvis (OFP) are an increasing issue in orthopedics. Current classification systems (CS) are mostly CT-based and complex and offer only moderate to substantial inter-rater reliability (interRR) and intra-rater reliability (intraRR). MRI is thus gaining importance as a complement. This study aimed to develop a simple and reliable CT- and MRI-based CS for OFP. METHODS: A structured iterative procedure was conducted to reach a consensus among German-speaking spinal and pelvic trauma experts over 5 years. As a result, the proposed OF-Pelvis CS was develop

The Oxford Finger Nail Appearance Score - a new scoring system for fingernail deformity following paediatric finger tip trauma.

Fingernail deformity is common, yet current methods used to define cosmetic appearance following trauma are mainly descriptive. In order to quantify the cosmetic appearance of the fingernail, we developed the Oxford Fingernail Appearance Score using a three stage iterative process. The score has five cosmetic components marked as binary outcomes composed of nail shape, nail adherence, eponychial appearance, nail surface appearance and presence of a split. In the first stage, two assessors independently assessed 25 photographs of fingernails taken at a minimum of four months following paediatri

The Turkish Version of the Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice (CAPE-V): A Reliability and Validity Study.

OBJECTIVE: The Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice (CAPE-V) was developed to assess voice quality. The aim of this study was to develop a Turkish adaptation of CAPE-V and to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Turkish version. METHODS: To adapt the CAPE-V protocol to Turkish, six sentences were constructed to meet the phonetic requirements. The validity of the Turkish version of the CAPE-V was tested with inter-rater reliability, intrarater reliability, and GRBAS versus the CAPE-V judgments. Ninety-nine dysphonic and 83 healthy subjects were enrolled. RESULTS: High int

Validation of the PHYSIO-PORT UP ambulatory blood pressure monitor in pregnant women according to the European Society of Hypertension International Protocol revision 2010.

The present study examines the performance of the ambulatory blood pressure monitor PHYSIO-PORT UP in pregnant and preeclamptic women. The systolic blood pressure (SBP) and the diastolic blood pressure (DBP) of 33 subjects (among them 13 with preeclampsia) were sequentially measured and compared to reference measurements. Those reference measurements were taken by two observers using a mercury sphygmomanometer. Subject recruitment and evaluation of the measurement results were performed according to the European Society of Hypertension International Protocol revision 2010 (ESH-IP 2010). Three

Within-subject variability of interferon-g assay results for tuberculosis and boosting effect of tuberculin skin testing: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Variability in interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs) results for tuberculosis has implications for interpretation of results close to the cut-point, and for defining thresholds for test conversion and reversion. However, little is known about the within-subject variability (reproducibility) of IGRAs. Several national guidelines recommend a two-step testing procedure (tuberculin skin test [TST] followed by IGRA) for the diagnosis of LTBI. However, the effect of a preceding TST on subsequent IGRA results has been reported in studies with apparently conflicting results. METHODOLOGY

Interobserver reliability and intraobserver reproducibility of the Fernandez classification for distal radius fractures.

We have evaluated the clinical application of the Fernandez classification without questioning the scientific validity, by assessing the interobserver reliability and intraobserver reproducibility. A set of 25 radiographs of distal radius fractures were given to six assessors along with details of Fernandez classification. The assessors classified the fractures on two different occasions 3 months apart. The outcome was assessed using kappa statistics and demonstrated poor interobserver reliability and intraobserver reproducibility. Caution should be exercised when using this classification for

Lack of agreement between rheumatologists in defining digital ulceration in systemic sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: To test the intra- and interobserver variability, among clinicians with an interest in systemic sclerosis (SSc), in defining digital ulcers. METHODS: Thirty-five images of finger lesions, incorporating a wide range of abnormalities at different sites, were duplicated, yielding a data set of 70 images. Physicians with an interest in SSc were invited to take part in the Web-based study, which involved looking through the images in a random sequence. The sequence differed for individual participants and prevented cross-checking with previous images. Participants were asked to grade ea

[Difficulties and reproducibility of radiological measurement of the proximal tibial axis according to Lévigne].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The angle between the anatomic axis of the tibia and the tangent to the superior borders of the tibial plateaus is, on average, tilted 3 degrees in the varus position. If there is no bone wear, this angle measures the constitutional epiphyseal axis of the proximal tibia. When degenerative joint disease modifies the aspect of the tibial plateaus, this angle measures the sum of the constitutional varus and the bone wear, without distinguishing between the two. It is known however that the respective contribution of these two deformations can have therapeutic implications, p

Interobserver reproducibility in diagnosis of breast lesions. A panel in Puglia (Italy). GSBioCaM.

BACKGROUND: Given the incidence of breast cancer, histologic agreement is necessary to select the proper treatment. METHODS & STUDY DESIGN: Twelve pathologists working in Puglia (Italy) independently evaluated a set of 88 slides of breast lesions. The set included 31 cases which presented difficulties at the moment of first diagnosis (problem cases) and 57 cases without problems (routine cases). Each pathologist was requested to classify lesions according to four categories: A, benign; B, atypical proliferation; C, in situ carcinoma; D, invasive carcinoma. For each case, the definite diagnosi

An independent assessment of two clubfoot-classification systems.

We conducted an independent assessment of two clubfoot-classification systems. In a blinded trial, two orthopaedists scored 55 feet by using the classification systems developed by Pirani et al. and by Dimeglio et al. Thirty-seven of the feet were also scored by a physical therapist. By using the 10-point classification described by Pirani, the two physician examiners tallied total scores that were within one point of one another 89% of the time. The mean difference between the scores assigned by the two examiners was 0.6 points. For the 20-point classification described by Dimeglio et al., to

The Reiss Screen for Maladaptive Behaviour: its reliability and internal consistencies.

The inter-rater and test-retest reliabilities, and internal consistencies of the Reiss Screen for Maladaptive Behavior (Reiss 1987) were evaluated on a random sample of adults with moderate through profound mental retardation living in an institutional setting. Generally, the Reiss Screen showed good inter-rater reliability, modest to good test-retest and good internal consistency. This suggests that the Reiss Screen has moderate to good psychometric robustness.

Observer reliability between juvenile and adolescent idiopathic scoliosis in measurement of stable Cobb's angle.

It is a measurement of Cobb's angles between adolescent (AIS) and juvenile (JIS) idiopathic scoliosis who had stable curves (variation <5 degrees) in more than three visits. Main objective of this paper is to measure inter- and intra-observer reliability of measurements between AIS and JIS who had stable curves in regular follow-up. Twenty-nine JIS and 44 AIS patients who had stable curves without bracing were identified using PACS system. Two observers independently measured Cobb's angle twice on first, during follow-up and final radiogram using computer-based digital radiogram. Both observer
