BACKGROUND: We aimed to determine whether a history of falls before admission affected physical activity levels and sedentary behavior negatively after implementing a behavior modification approach in patients with minor ischemic stroke.
METHODS: This study constituted a secondary analysis of an intervention trial. In the intervention study, patients with minor ischemic stroke were randomly assigned to two groups: intervention and control groups. The intervention group was encouraged to reduce sedentary behavior during hospitalization and after discharge, while the control group was encourage

PURPOSE: Explore if a clinical workflow algorithm that connected Stage I-III newly diagnosed breast cancer (BC) patients to exercise and rehabilitation services from diagnosis throughout care associated with a lower percentage of time spent in sedentary behavior (SB)compared with standard of care (SOC). We also examined the relationship between SB and ECOG performance status scores, a measure of functional status.
METHODS: This secondary data analysis from the Comprehensive Oncology Rehabilitation and Exercise (CORE) program was carried out among 51 BC survivors (CORE = 33, SOC = 18) with eva

This study analyzed associations between physical activity (PA), sedentary behaviors (SB), sleep, and mental health indicators in young adults during the COVID-19 lockdown (15 January-19 April 2021). The participants were 549 Portuguese university students (18-30 years, 57.7% male). Mental health was assessed using the DASS-21 for depression, anxiety, stress, and DASS-21 total score (DASSt). Physical activity (vigorous, moderate, walking) was measured with the IPAQ, while SB (e.g., sitting, screen time) and sleep were evaluated using self-reported measures and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Inde

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Childhood obesity is considered a major problem in the modern world, associated with many health issues in youth. This review aimed the association between extracurricular sports participation, sedentary time/screen time, and "obesogenic" and "non-obesogenic" dietary habits among youth and to explore the role of family structure on the adoption of sedentary behaviors by children.
RECENT FINDINGS: Increased participation in extracurricular sports was associated with a healthier dietary pattern, containing more "non-obesogenic" food choices. Opposite results were indicated by

BACKGROUND: Leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) and sedentary behavior (SB) are considered important modifiable risk factors for Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, the associations of long-term trajectories of LTPA and LTSB with T2DM risk remains uncertain.
METHODS: Leveraging prospective cohort data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS), we identified the long-term trajectories of LTPA and LTSB among 7,188 participants from 2004 (31 to 77 years) to 2015 (42 to 88 years) by group-based trajectory modeling. Cox regression was used to assess the associations of LTPA and LTS

BACKGROUND: Sedentary behavior (SB) increases the risk of disease and mortality, even in physically active individuals. Adults living with multimorbidity may be particularly vulnerable. Although factors such as age, body mass index (BMI), and social support have been suggested, evidence is largely based on self-reported activity that tends to underestimate SB; therefore, correlates of objectively measured SB in adults with medical conditions remain insufficiently described. We investigated clinical and sociodemographic correlates of accelerometer-measured SB among adults with medical condition

BACKGROUND: Insufficient physical activity (PA) and extensive sedentary behavior (SB) in adolescents has been related to adverse outcomes related to physical fitness, body weight as well as social and psychological health indicators. Furthermore, these behaviors tend to track from adolescence to adulthood, thereby affecting adult chronic disease risk. The knowledge of factors associated with PA and SB is needed particularly in adolescents, in order to plan public health strategies aiming at increasing PA and reducing SB. The aim of this Citizen Science project (conducted between February 2020

Sedentary behavior has been found to be associated with poorer mental health. The aim of this study was to estimate associations of sedentary behavior with psychological distress and substance use among adolescents in five Southeast Asian countries. The cross-sectional sample included 32,696 nationally representative samples of school-going adolescents (median age 14 years) from Indonesia, Laos, Philippines, Thailand and Timor-Leste. Leisure-time sedentary behavior, physical activity, psychological distress and substance use were assessed by self-report. Overall, the students engaged in <1 h (

OBJECTIVE: Sedentary children have greater risk of developing abnormalities in glucose homeostasis. We investigated whether interrupting sedentary behavior (sitting) with very short periods of walking would improve glucose metabolism without affecting dietary intake in children with overweight or obesity. We hypothesized that interrupting sitting with short bouts of moderate-intensity walking would decrease insulin area under the curve (AUC) during an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) compared with uninterrupted sitting.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Overweight/obese (BMI ≥85th percentile) ch

BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity among children and adolescents has reached critical levels worldwide, with approximately 81% of school-aged youth failing to meet the World Health Organization recommendation of at least 60 min of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per day. At the same time, screen-based sedentary behaviors have increased substantially, raising concerns about their combined impact on brain development, cognitive processes, and behavioral regulation. Although extensive research exists, evidence regarding dose-response relationships, neurobiological mechanisms, and the moderat

The independent and domain-specific associations between physical activity (PA) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) remain underexplored. This study investigates the relationships between leisure-time, occupational, and transportation-related PA, along with sedentary behavior, and CKD prevalence in a nationally representative U.S. adult cohort. We analyzed 24,950 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2012. PA and sedentary behavior were assessed via validated questionnaires. Participants were classified based on adherence to physical activity guideli

BACKGROUND: Less robust diurnal cortisol rhythms are hypothesized to be associated with fatigue, depressive symptoms, psychological distress, sleep disturbances and poorer quality of life. Sedentary behavior and physical activity may influence cortisol rhythmicity, providing mechanistic leads for intervention strategies. We examined longitudinal associations of accelerometer-assessed sedentary behavior and physical activity with diurnal cortisol patterns among patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) up to 12 months post-treatment.
METHODS: Among 74 CRC survivors, total and prolonged sedentary t
