We reviewed surgical result of 5 patients with pulmonary metastasis from submandibular gland cancer. Pathological diagnosis was adenoid cystic carcinoma in 2 patients, carcinoma in pleomorphic adenoma in 1, epidermoid carcinoma in 1, and mucoepidermoid tumor in 1. Disease free interval from resection of the primary lesion to diagnosis of pulmonary metastasis was ranging from 7 to 76 months. Lobectomy was performed in 2 patients and partial lung resection in 3. Submandibular gland (SMG) development involves branching morphogenesis of the salivary epithelium into the surrounding mesenchyme, accompanied by proliferation and differentiation of immature salivary cells along acinar and ductal cell lineages. OBJECTIVE: Drooling in familial dysautonomia (FD) has been attributed to denervation supersensitivity. The aim of this study was to investigate submandibular and sublingual (SM/SL) gland function in FD.
STUDY DESIGN: SM/SL saliva was collected from 15 children with FD and from 31 healthy control subjects. The protein and electrolyte content and the salivary flow rate were determined in each subject.

An enzyme which is able to liberate angiotensin II from angiotensin I, angiotensinogen(1-14) fragment and angiotensinogen was purified from human submandibular gland. Its molecular weight is 110,000; is inhibited by PMSF but not by EDTA or enalaprilat. The pH optima for angiotensin II liberation were 4.0 for angiotensin I, 7.0 for angiotensinogen(1-14) fragment and 8.0 for angiotensinogen. The total amount of angiotensin II generating activity in the human submandibular gland is 5,000-times smaller than that in the rat gland.

We reviewed our 41-year experience with tumors of the submandibular gland to determine what factors influence outcome and their implications for treatment. The most common benign neoplasm was pleomorphic adenoma (21), while among malignant tumors the adenoid cystic variety (37) predominated. A retrospective review of 91 patients with submandibular gland carcinoma seen between 1958 and 1984, is reported. Among these were 37 (41%) adenoidcystic carcinomas, 14 (15%) adenocarcinomas, 14 (15%) mucoepidermoid carcinomas, and 10 (11%) malignant mixed tumors.
