Models on the cerebral organisation of speech and language capacities are predominantly based on lesion studies. Neuroradiological activation methods using positron emission or magnetic resonance tomography provide a further means to investigate brain-behaviour relationships. The present paper reviews the available data obtained with functional imaging during speech and language tasks. The classical connectionist model suggests several distinct language centres within the perisylvian area of the dominant hemisphere. Especially the processing of complex verbal stimuli yields haemodynamic and me

This study was a preliminary analysis of the differential effects of instructions to slow maternal speech rate, or to slow and simplify maternal speech when conversing with normally fluent children. Twenty mothers and their normally fluent children participated. Instructions to slow maternal rate resulted in maternal speech simplification as a by-product. No significant differences were found between the effects of the two sets of instructions. Furthermore, children's speech rate and language complexity did not parallel maternal adjustments. These last findings are problematic for some of the

We review the findings from a study utilizing functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI) to examine the effects of total sleep deprivation (TSD) on verbal learning, arithmetic, and divided attention. For verbal learning and divided attention, TSD was associated with increased activation in the bilateral prefrontal cortex and parietal lobes. Increased sleepiness after TSD and lower levels of memory impairment were correlated with increased activation in specific regions of the prefrontal cortex and parietal lobes, respectively. The arithmetic task led to significantly decreased activation in …

This study used an electrophysiological measurement operation to investigate lateralized processing deficits associated with academic learning-disability subtypes. Fast frequency EEG activity in the 36-44 hertz (Hz) band was recorded from reading-disabled (RLD), arithmetic-disabled (ALD), and nondisabled control children engaged in verbal and nonverbal cognitive tasks. The control group, but neither LD group, exhibited a task-dependent shift in lateralization of 40 Hz EEG; the RLD subjects generated proportionately less left-hemisphere 40 Hz activity than control or ALD subjects during the ver

The objective of this study was to examine the independent effect of infection with each of four helminths (Ascaris lumbricoides, Schistosoma japonicum, Necator americanus, and Trichuris trichiura) on cognitive function after adjusting for the potential confounders nutritional status, socioeconomic status (SES), hemoglobin, sex, and the presence of other helminthes. This cross-sectional study was carried out in a rural village in Leyte, The Philippines in 319 children 7-18 years old. Three stools were collected and read in duplicate by the Kato Katz method. Infection intensity was defined by W

Word learning is an iterative and dynamic process supported by multiple neural and cognitive systems. Converging evidence from behavioral, cellular, and systems neuroscience highlights sleep as an important support for memory and word learning over time. In many lab-based word learning experiments, participants encode and subsequently retrieve newly learned words in a single session. These designs are inadequate to capture the full dynamic word learning process, making them less ecologically valid. Single timepoint studies also limit investigation of the role of behavioral and lifestyle factor

Several studies reported impaired cognitive functioning after pregnancy complicated by preeclampsia. The present study examined cognitive and executive functioning in women with preeclampsia at a time at which immediate effects of gestation have resolved, brain damage due to other risk factors have not yet manifested, and impairments may thus primarily occur as a result of the huge stress induced by the potentially life threatening condition. Verbal learning/memory (California Verbal Learning Test) and inhibitory functioning (Mittenecker Pointing Test) of 35 women with preeclampsia and 38 wome…

Purpose Word learning difficulties have been documented in multiple studies involving children with dyslexia and developmental language disorder (DLD; see also specific language impairment). However, no previous studies have directly contrasted word learning in these two frequently co-occurring disorders. We examined word learning in second-grade students with DLD-only and dyslexia-only as compared to each other, peers with both disorders (DLD + dyslexia), and peers with typical development. We hypothesized that children with dyslexia-only and DLD-only would show differences in word learning d

The spelling procedures of normal and reading-disabled French-speaking children matched for reading level were examined. Subjects had to spell frequent and infrequent words containing either inconsistent nondominant graphonemes (e.g., /s/ spelled "c" as in "cigarette," the dominant spelling for /s/ being "s") or consistent context-dependent graphonemes (e.g., /g/ followed by "i"-->"gu") as well as pseudo-words including inconsistent graphonemes presented in different phonological contexts (e.g., /s/ can be spelled "s" or "c" if the following vowel is /i/, but "c" is incorrect if the following

OBJECTIVE: Prenatal exposure to antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) and in particular valproate (VPA) has been shown to impair intellectual and language development in children, but the impact on memory functioning has not been thoroughly investigated. This study aimed to evaluate memory skills in school-age children who were exposed to AEDs prenatally.
METHOD: The sample comprised of 105 children aged 6 to 8 years. Information on AED exposure, maternal epilepsy, pregnancy, and medical history was prospectively obtained. Children completed a neuropsychological assessment including measures of verbal a

The notion of 'accelerated long-term forgetting' has often been attributed to disrupted 'late' memory consolidation. Nevertheless, methodological issues in the literature have left this theory unproven, leading some to suggest such findings may be reflective of subtle acquisition or early retention deficits. This study attempts to address such issues, and also to explore which pathophysiological variables are associated with forgetting rates. Eighteen participants with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and eighteen matched controls completed background neuropsychological measurement of immediate an

We studied to what extent immediate and delayed recall in an auditory verbal learning paradigm was affected by basic information processing speed (digit copying) and hearing acuity (average hearing acuity at 1, 2 and 4 KHz at the better ear). A group of 453 individuals in the age between 23 and 82 years with no overt hearing pathology was recruited from a larger study of cognitive aging (Maastricht Aging Study, MAAS). After controlling for age, sex, educational level, and processing speed it was found that a mild to moderate hearing loss predicted lower verbal memory performance. Auditory admi…

The process through which a word transitions from unknown to known has been described as involving two processes. First, Lexical Configuration, referring to the rapid acquisition of word-form knowledge (e.g., orthography, phonology, meaning) following initial exposure. Second, Lexicalization, which describes the interaction of the newly learned word with existing words as a result of its integration into the mental lexicon. Novel words can first be encountered either orally or in writing and previous studies have suggested that modality plays a role in word learning. However, specific contribu

Surface dyslexia is characterised by poor reading of irregular words while nonword reading can be completely normal. Previous work has identified several theoretical possibilities for the underlying locus of impairment in surface dyslexia. In this study, we systematically investigated whether children with surface dyslexia showed different patterns of reading performance that could be traced back to different underlying levels of impairment. To do this, we tested 12 English readers, replicating previous work in Hebrew (Gvion & Friedmann, 2013; 2016; Friedmann & Lukov, 2008; Friedmann & Gvion,
