An epidemiological modeling investigation of the long-term changing dynamics of the plague epidemics in Hong Kong.

Identifying epidemic-driving factors through epidemiological modeling is a crucial public health strategy that has substantial policy implications for control and prevention initiatives. In this study, we employ dynamic modeling to investigate the transmission dynamics of pneumonic plague epidemics in Hong Kong from 1902 to 1904. Through the integration of human, flea, and rodent populations, we analyze the long-term changing trends and identify the epidemic-driving factors that influence pneumonic plague outbreaks. We examine the dynamics of the model and derive epidemic metrics, such as repr

Mathematical Global Dynamics and Control Strategies on Echinococcus multilocularis Infection.

Echinococcus multilocularis, a major cause of echinococcosis in human, is a parasitic sylvatic disease between two major hosts in a predator-prey relation. A new model for the transmission dynamics of Echinococcus multilocularis in the population of red foxes and voles with environment as a source of infection is formulated and rigorously analyzed. The model is used to access the impact of treatment on red foxes and environmental disinfection as control strategies on the disease dynamics. The control reproduction number is computed and is used to rigorously prove the local and global dynamics

Simple multi-scale modeling of the transmission dynamics of the 1905 plague epidemic in Bombay.

The first few disease generations of an infectious disease outbreak is the most critical phase to implement control interventions. The lack of accurate data and information during the early transmission phase hinders the application of complex compartmental models to make predictions and forecasts about important epidemic quantities. Thus, simpler models are often times better tools to understand the early dynamics of an outbreak particularly in the context of limited data. In this paper we mechanistically derive and fit a family of logistic models to spatial-temporal data of the 1905 plague e

Assessing the potential impact of limited public health resources on the spread and control of typhoid.

Typhoid fever is a systemic infection caused by Salmonella Typhi and occurs predominantly in association with poor sanitation and lack of clean drinking water. Despite recent progress in water and sanitation coverage, the disease remains a substantial public health problem in many developing countries. A mathematical model for the spread of typhoid has been formulated using non linear ordinary differential equations. The model includes a special treatment function to assess the effects of limited treatment resources on the spread of typhoid. It is shown that the model has multiple equilibria a

Establishment and cryptic transmission of Zika virus in Brazil and the Americas.

Transmission of Zika virus (ZIKV) in the Americas was first confirmed in May 2015 in northeast Brazil. Brazil has had the highest number of reported ZIKV cases worldwide (more than 200,000 by 24 December 2016) and the most cases associated with microcephaly and other birth defects (2,366 confirmed by 31 December 2016). Since the initial detection of ZIKV in Brazil, more than 45 countries in the Americas have reported local ZIKV transmission, with 24 of these reporting severe ZIKV-associated disease. However, the origin and epidemic history of ZIKV in Brazil and the Americas remain poorly under

Chains of transmission and control of Ebola virus disease in Conakry, Guinea, in 2014: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: An epidemic of Ebola virus disease of unprecedented size continues in parts of west Africa. For the first time, large urban centres such as Conakry, the capital of Guinea, are affected. We did an observational study of patients with Ebola virus disease in three regions of Guinea, including Conakry, aiming to map the routes of transmission and assess the effect of interventions. METHODS: Between Feb 10, 2014, and Aug 25, 2014, we obtained data from the linelist of all confirmed and probable cases in Guinea (as of Sept 16, 2014), a laboratory database of information about patients,

Dynamics and control of measles in Portugal: accessing the impact of anticipating the age for the first dose of MMR from 15 to 12 months of age.

The all-time low incidence of measles in Portugal in the recent years, raises questions regarding whether the disease has been eliminated, the role of recent control measures, and the epidemiological consequences of the rise in the proportion of newborns to vaccinated mothers, as opposed to those born to mothers who acquired immunity by natural infection. We estimate the vaccination coverage against measles in Portugal on a cohort-by-cohort basis, and incorporate this information into an age-structured seasonally-driven mathematical model aimed at reproducing measles dynamics in the past decad

Explaining Usutu virus dynamics in Austria: model development and calibration.

Usutu virus (USUV), a flavivirus of the Japanese encephalitis virus complex, was for the first time detected outside Africa in the region around Vienna (Austria) in 2001 by Weissenböck et al. [Weissenböck, H., Kolodziejek, J., Url, A., Lussy, H., Rebel-Bauder, B., Nowotny, N., 2002. Emergence of Usutu virus, an African mosquito-borne flavivirus of the Japanese encephalitis virus group, central Europe. Emerg. Infect. Dis. 8, 652-656]. USUV is an arthropod-borne virus (arbovirus) circulating between arthropod vectors (mainly mosquitoes of the Culex pipiens complex) and avian amplification hosts.

Modeling adult heterosexual HIV transmission and its impact on mother-to-child infection.

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) has been a major focus of research for several decades due to its multiple transmission pathways, its high virulence and the absence, to date, of both curative and preventive treatments. Although sexual transmission remains by far the most dominant route, mother-to-child (vertical) transmission-which may occur during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding-is also significant and accounts for approximately 15%-30% of cases in the absence of antiretroviral therapy (ART). In this work, we develop a heterosexual HIV transmission model that incorporates vertic

Vaccination and combined optimal control measures for malaria prevention and spread mitigation.

Malaria is a life-threatening mosquito-borne infectious disease prevalent in tropical regions, primarily transmitted to humans by the bites of infected Anopheles mosquitoes. This study presents a mathematical model analysis aimed at understanding the dynamics of malaria transmission and the effectiveness of various prevention strategies. Despite being preventable and curable, malaria continues to pose significant public health challenges, notably due to the risk of recurrent infections if improperly treated. The proposed deterministic model establishes the positivity and boundedness of solutio

Model-informed evaluation of interventions to eliminate tuberculosis transmission in China.

OBJECTIVES: Despite impressive achievements in the control of tuberculosis (TB), the burden of TB in China remains high. Real-time evaluation of interventions can help optimise strategies to eliminate TB. However, the multiple infection routes and heterogeneous distribution of TB make reliable evaluation difficult. This study aimed to examine the distribution of TB in different age groups and evaluate the efficacy of different interventions. STUDY DESIGN: A compartmental SVEIR model was constructed using ordinary differential equations to simulate TB transmission patterns. METHODS: A TB mode

Effects of fish-human transmission and different life stages of fish on Clonorchiasis: A novel mathematical model.

Clonorchiasis is a zoonotic disease mainly caused by eating raw fish and shrimp, and there is no vaccine to prevent it. More than 30 million people are infected worldwide, of which China alone accounts for about half, and is one of the countries most seriously affected by Clonorchiasis. In this work, we formulate a novel Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE) model to discuss the biological attributes of fish within authentic ecosystems and the complex lifecycle of Clonorchis sinensis. This model includes larval fish, adult fish, infected fish, humans, and cercariae. We derive the basic reproduc

Spatial variability in the reproduction number of Ebola virus disease, Democratic Republic of the Congo, January-September 2019.

The ongoing Ebola virus disease epidemic (August 2018─October 2019) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has been exacerbated by deliberate attacks on healthcare workers despite vaccination efforts. Using a mathematical/statistical modelling framework, we present the quantified effective reproduction number (Rt) at national and regional levels as at 29 September. The weekly trend in Rt displays fluctuations while our recent national-level Rt falls slightly above 1.0 with substantial uncertainty, which suggests improvements in epidemic control.

Ebola virus disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 1976-2014.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has experienced the most outbreaks of Ebola virus disease since the virus' discovery in 1976. This article provides for the first time a description and a line list for all outbreaks in this country, comprising 996 cases. Compared to patients over 15 years old, the odds of dying were significantly lower in patients aged 5 to 15 and higher in children under five (with 100% mortality in those under 2 years old). The odds of dying increased by 11% per day that a patient was not hospitalised. Outbreaks with an initially high reproduction number, R (>3), were ra

Estimation of parameters related to vaccine efficacy and dengue transmission from two large phase III studies.

BACKGROUND: A tetravalent dengue vaccine was shown to be efficacious against symptomatic dengue in two phase III efficacy studies performed in five Asian and five Latin American countries. The objective here was to estimate key parameters of a dengue transmission model using the data collected during these studies. METHODS: Parameter estimation was based on a Sequential Monte Carlo approach and used a cohort version of the transmission model. Serotype-specific basic reproduction numbers were derived for each country. Parameters related to serotype interactions included duration of cross-prote

A network-patch methodology for adapting agent-based models for directly transmitted disease to mosquito-borne disease.

Mosquito-borne diseases cause significant public health burden and are widely re-emerging or emerging. Understanding, predicting, and mitigating the spread of mosquito-borne disease in diverse populations and geographies are ongoing modelling challenges. We propose a hybrid network-patch model for the spread of mosquito-borne pathogens that accounts for individual movement through mosquito habitats, extending the capabilities of existing agent-based models (ABMs) to include vector-borne diseases. The ABM are coupled with differential equations representing 'clouds' of mosquitoes in patches acc

On the sexual transmission dynamics of hepatitis B virus in China.

In a previous study we noticed that there might be co-infections of HBV and HIV by comparing incidence rates of these two diseases in China. The comparisons between the incidence data of HBV and sexually transmitted diseases (including AIDS, HIV, syphilis and gonorrhea) in China demonstrate that sexual transmission is an important route of spread of HBV in China. On the basis of this fact, in this paper we propose a compartmental model including under-aged children, male adults, and female adults. The effect of sexual transmission on the spread and prevalence of HBV in China is studied. The mo

An SEIQR model for childhood diseases.

It has been shown that the inclusion of an isolated class in the classical SIR model for childhood diseases can be responsible for self-sustained oscillations. Hence, the recurrent outbreaks of such diseases can be caused by autonomous, deterministic factors. We extend the model to include a latent class (i.e. individuals who are infected with the disease, but are not yet able to pass the disease to others) and study the resulting dynamics. The existence of Hopf bifurcations is shown for the model, as well as a homoclinic bifurcation for a perturbation to the model. For historical data on scar

Multi-species interactions in West Nile virus infection.

In this paper, we analyse the interaction of different species of birds and mosquitoes on the dynamics of West Nile virus (WNV) infection. We study the different transmission efficiencies of the vectors and birds and the impact on the possible outbreaks. We show that the basic reproductive number is the weighted mean of the basic reproductive number of each species, weighted by the relative abundance of its population in the location. These results suggest a possible explanation of why there are no outbreaks of WNV in Mexico.
