Toothbrushing with and without dentifrice containing abrasive was performed on human enamel pieces attached to resin plates exposed to the oral cavities of 3 human subjects for 8 weeks. The effects on the ground enamel surfaces with engraved scratches were examined by scanning electron and scanning laser microscopy. In primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) liver copper retention occurs as a complication of cholestasis. By analogy with Wilson's disease, it has been suggested that copper retention is hepatotoxic in PBC, and this has been the rationale for the use of D-penicillamine in this disease. The hypothesis that copper is hepatotoxic in PBC has not been tested and in this study we have evaluated the role of liver copper retention in the pathogenesis of PBC. Sixty-four patients with PBC have been studied. Fifty-four had increased liver copper concentrations. Liver cell synthetic function was well preserved.

OBJECTIVE: Intraluminal crystalloids have been described in the prostate, salivary gland, and ovary, but have not yet been reported in the breast. We report four cases of breast carcinoma in which these crystalloids were found in ducts with intraductal carcinoma or atypical hyperplasia. Methodological aspects of the use of X-ray microanalysis in physiological and pharmacological experiments on cultured myometrial cells were investigated. Cultured human myometrial cells were grown from biopsies after detaching the fibroblasts. Of the cultured cells, 95-98% showed desmin-like immunoreactivity. Ceramics are more and more frequently under consideration for construction of blood-contacting devices, i.e. cardiac valves or cardiac assist devices. This study evaluated the haemolysis eventually initiated in vitro by ceramic powders (Al2O3, ZrO2/Y2O3, AlN, B4C, BN, SiC, Si3 N4, TiB2, TiN, TiC), graphite and diamond. The chemical composition of the powders was studied by X-ray microprobe and various other methods, and BET specific areas were determined. The haemolysis was almost zero for all powders, except AlN which showed slight haemolysis and TiB2 which had high haemolytic power.

Chloride ions are shown to be actively transported by the ciliary epithelium. The distribution of these ions around the ciliary epithelium was studied by electron microscopy: chloride ions were deposited as silver chloride (AgCl) in the tissue. Albino rabbits, bullfrogs and chick embryos just before hatching were used. In all the animals examined, the concentration of chloride ions was lower in the nonpigmented and pigmented epithelial cells of the ciliary epithelium than in the extracellular space. The chloride ions appeared to accumulate between the nonpigmented epithelial cells.
