White lupin (Lupinus albus) produces cluster roots, an adaptation to low soil phosphorus (P). Cluster roots exude large levels of P-solubilizing compounds such as citrate and malate. In contrast, narrow leaf lupin (L. angustifolius) is closely related to L. albus, but does not produce cluster roots. To examine the different strategies for P acquisition, we compared the growth, biomass allocation, respiratory properties and construction cost between L. albus and L. angustifolius under P-deficient conditions. Both Lupinus species were grown in hydroponic culture with 1 or 100 μM P. Under the P-d

Productivity of Indian mustard (B. juncea), a major oil yielding crop in rapeseed-mustard group is heavily inflicted by mustard aphid, L. erysimi. Mustard aphid, a specialist aphid species on rapeseed-mustard crops, rapidly multiplies and colonizes the plants leading to successful infestation. In contrary, legume specific cowpea aphid, A. craccivora when released on B. juncea plants fails to build up population and thus remains unsuccessful in infestation. In the present study, differential host response of B. juncea to the two aphid species, one being successful insect-pest and the other bein

We have previously shown that the beneficial filamentous fungus Trichoderma virens secretes the highly effective hydrophobin-like elicitor Sm1 that induces systemic disease resistance in the dicot cotton (Gossypium hirsutum). In this study we tested whether colonization of roots by T. virens can induce systemic protection against a foliar pathogen in the monocot maize (Zea mays), and we further demonstrated the importance of Sm1 during maize-fungal interactions using a functional genomics approach. Maize seedlings were inoculated with T. virens Gv29-8 wild type and transformants in which SM1 w

Aphid salivary proteins are critical in modulating plant defence responses. Grain aphid Sitobion miscanthi is an important wheat pest worldwide. However, the molecular basis for the regulation of the plant resistance to cereal aphids remains largely unknown. Here, we show that SmCSP4, a chemosensory protein from S. miscanthi saliva, is secreted into wheat plants during aphid feeding. Delivery of SmCSP4 into wheat leaves activates salicylic acid (SA)-mediated plant defence responses and subsequently reduces aphid performance by deterring aphid feeding behaviour. In contrast, silencing SmCSP4 ge

Olive tree is one of the most valuable crops cultivated for its oil that is rich in antioxidants. The beneficial effects of oleuropein and hydroxytyrosol (HT), the most abundant and the most powerful antioxidant respectively, as well as tyrosol, HT's precursor molecule, are well studied however their biosynthetic pathways are not yet clarified. The transcriptome analysis of the young olive fruit, cultivar "Koroneiki", revealed transcripts of all the enzymes used to reconstitute the biosynthetic pathway of tyrosol and HT in other organisms. We also identified transcripts of the genes that encod

BACKGROUND: Non-essential trance metal such as cadmium (Cd) is toxic to plants. Although some plants have developed elaborate strategies to deal with absorbed Cd through multiple pathways, the regulatory mechanisms behind the Cd tolerance are not fully understood. Ferrochelatase-1 (FC1, EC4.99.1.1) is the terminal enzyme of heme biosynthesis, catalyzing insertion of ferrous ion into protoporphyrin IX. Recent studies have shown that FC1 is involved in several physiological processes. However, its biological function associated with plant abiotic stress response is poorly understood.
RESULTS: I

Ethylene (C(2)H(4)) is a unique plant-signaling molecule that regulates numerous developmental processes. The key enzyme in the two-step biosynthetic pathway of ethylene is 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate synthase (ACS), which catalyzes the conversion of S-adenosylmethionine (AdoMet) to ACC, the precursor of ethylene. To understand the function of this important enzyme, we analyzed the entire family of nine ACS isoforms (ACS1, ACS2, ACS4-9, and ACS11) encoded in the Arabidopsis genome. Our analysis reveals that members of this protein family share an essential function, because individual AC

Unlike annual herbaceous species, trees have long juvenile periods, and several years or even decades have to be passed before their first flowering occurs, which is undesirable for both industrial and breeding purposes. This review describes various applications of grafting to reduce the time to first flowering in woody species. Dwarfing rootstocks commonly used in agriculture often induce precocious flowering in scions. Possible molecular mechanisms underlying rootstock-induced early flowering in grafted trees are considered. Another traditional approach is grafting juvenile scions onto matu

The seeds of Senna tora L.are the core organs for the biosynthesis of anthraquinones, and their medicinal value is highly dependent on the content of anthraquinones. However, TCP transcription factors play a key regulatory role in the biosynthesis of plant secondary metabolites. Nevertheless, whether TCP transcription factors regulate the accumulation of anthraquinone compounds has not been reported. Therefore, in this study, qRT-PCR analysis was performed to determine the expression pattern of StTCP11 at different growth and development stages of S. tora seeds. An overexpression vector was co

Alternative splicing (AS) greatly expands transcriptome and proteome diversity in eukaryotes. Intron retention (IR) is the predominant AS type in plants, with critical roles in environmental adaptation and developmental control. Long viewed as splicing noise, IR is now established as a precisely regulated mechanism that modulates RNA stability, translation, subcellular localization, and protein function. Here, we review recent advances in plant IR research, covering technical progress in accurate IR identification using long-read and single-cell sequencing, cis- and trans-regulatory mechanisms

In nature, plants are rarely challenged by a single, isolated, environmental stress factor. Instead, they continuously experience a dynamic range of abiotic and biotic constraints, generating conditions of multifactorial stress combination (MFSC). Driven by anthropogenic activities, many stressors are increasing in their frequency, intensity, and duration, exposing plants to complex conditions that go well beyond two interacting factors. A recent conceptual advance is the recognition that plant responses to MFSC cannot be predicted by simply summing up plant responses of the different individu

Persimmon (Diospyros kaki Thunb.) is an important fruit crop in East Asia with significant commercial potential. However, dwarfing cultivation in persimmon trees is rarely applied due to the lack of excellent dwarfing rootstocks and cultivars. 'Nantongxiaofangshi' (Diospyros kaki Linn.cv. Nantongxiaofangshi) is an excellent persimmon cultivar suitable for dwarfing cultivation due to its distinct dwarfing characteristics, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we further identified the DkGAI1 gene, which encodes a DELLA protein, as a candidate gene regulating dwarfing in '

It has previously been shown that hydraulic conductance in bur oak leaves (Quercus macrocarpa Michx.), measured with the high pressure flow meter technique (HPFM), can significantly increase within 30 min following exposure to high irradiance. The present study investigated whether this increase could be explained by an increase in the cell-to-cell pathway and whether the response is linked to changes in the transcript level corresponding to aquaporin genes. Four cDNA sequences showing high similarity to members of the aquaporin gene family from other plant species were characterized from bur

We have characterized four sequential enzymes that transform 1-hydroxy-N-methylcanadine to narcotoline hemiacetal, completing our elucidation of noscapine biosynthesis in opium poppy. Two cytochromes P450 catalyze hydroxylations at C13 and C8 on the protoberberine scaffold, the latter step inducing ring opening and the formation of an aldehyde moiety. Acetylation at C13 before C8 hydroxylation introduces a protective group subsequently hydrolyzed by a carboxylesterase, which triggers rearrangement to a cyclic hemiacetal.

The seedless trait in grapes primarily arises from pseudo-parthenocarpy, driven by early seed abortion involving programmed cell death (PCD) and autophagy. However, the specific regulatory networks governing these pathways remain poorly defined. To address this, we systematically characterized the PCD-related (vacuolar processing enzyme [VPE] and metacaspase [MC]) and autophagy-related (ATG) gene families in the seedless cultivar 'Jingkejing' utilizing comprehensive bioinformatic analyses, spatiotemporal transcriptomic profiling, and transient expression assays. We identified three VPE, six MC

Shoot branching exhibits significant plasticity and is largely regulated by BRANCHED1 (BRC1), a key integrator of endogenous and environmental cues that acts locally to control axillary bud development. However, the gene regulatory networks governed by BRC1 and the mechanisms underlying its regulation remain poorly understood. Here, we identify a cluster of transcription factor-encoding genes that are dynamically responsive to multiple branching pathways, inversely correlated in expression with BRC1 levels, and functionally enriched in pathways related to floral organ development (FOD) and sho
