Thyme and mint essential oil supplementation on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus): effects on growth performance, antioxidant status, and intestinal health.

The use of phytogenic feed additives has attracted increasing interest as a sustainable nutritional strategy to improve fish performance and health in aquaculture. This study evaluated the effects of dietary supplementation with thyme essential oil (TEO), mint essential oil (MEO), and their combination (TMEO) on growth performance, antioxidant status, and intestinal histomorphology in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). A total of 224 fish (initial body weight 3.50 ± 0.20 g) were randomly allocated to four experimental groups with seven replicates per treatment and fed either a basal diet (c

Oil-in-water nanoemulsification of peppermint oil enhances its antibacterial and antibiofilm activity.

Peppermint essential oil (PEO) exhibits broad antimicrobial activity but suffers from poor aqueous dispersibility, volatility, and limited physicochemical stability. To overcome these limitations, an oil-in-water peppermint essential oil nanoemulsion (PEONE) was formulated using Brij®58 and Span®80 surfactants via careful optimization of ultrasonication technology that resulted development of spherical droplets of ∼40 ± 9 nm. The formulation was found to be stable for ∼28 days and exhibited negligible coalescence and Ostwald ripening and a low creaming index (∼1.42-2%) over 60 days. PEONE exhi

Heavy metals and pesticides in medicinal plants: environmental sources, plant responses, and human health risk assessment.

Medicinal plants have served as the foundation of healthcare across cultures for centuries, yet their safety is increasingly undermined by heavy metal and pesticide contamination driven by industrial growth, agrochemical misuse and environmental degradation. Despite widespread concern, the field remains fragmented. Contamination data are scattered across taxa and regions. The link between pollutant bioaccumulation and loss of medicinal potency is rarely explored mechanistically. Moreover, human health risk assessments tailored to herbal consumers remain largely absent from regulatory conversat

Beyond antibiotics: Essential oils as novel biofilm inhibitors.

BACKGROUND: Multidrug and extensively antibiotic-resistant microorganisms, also known as "superbugs," are now becoming a global threat to mankind. Bacteria constitute a protective layer of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) around their colonies, which produces persistent bacterial infection. Bacteria coordinate in aggregated biofilm with each other through a mechanism named quorum sensing. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the potential of essential oils as novel agents for inhibiting bacterial biofilm formation, specifically through their quorum sensing inhibitory properties. ME

A study to look at the effects of a hydrolat spray on hot flushes in women being treated for breast cancer.

Women undergoing treatment for breast cancer may experience hot flushes, which greatly impact on quality of life. The use of water sprays or moist wipes to lower skin temperature is often recommended. A peppermint and neroli hydrolat spray was compared to a plain water spray to assess which was preferred, in a single-blind randomised control crossover trial. Only 18 of the 44 patients (41%) preferred the hydrolat spray to a plain water spray, which was less than the 80% required to offer this spray as a standard suggestion for hot flush management. However a small number of those choosing it f

Pseudomonas fluorescens improves morph-physiological characteristics, essential oil compounds, and gene expression implicated in menthol biosynthesis under water stress conditions in peppermint.

Drought stress limits growth, essential oil production, and menthol biosynthesis in peppermint (Mentha piperita). Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), such as Pseudomonas fluorescens, can act as a biotic factor to enhance plant growth, antioxidant defense, and secondary metabolite accumulation under water stress. This study investigated the effects of P. fluorescens strain 18 inoculation on growth, antioxidant activity, essential oil composition, and menthol biosynthesis gene expression under three drought levels (30%, 65%, and 100% field capacity). Under drought stress at 65% field ca

Mechanisms of action and clinical effectiveness of herbal treatments for disorders of gut-brain interaction.

Disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI), such as functional dyspepsia (FD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), affect about one-third of the global population. Many patients turn to traditional and herbal medicines for relief, given the lack of effective therapies. This review assesses the clinical and preclinical evidence for herbal treatments used for patients with DGBI. Placebo-controlled trials show that specific herbal preparations, including peppermint oil, ginger, and commercial formulations like STW-5, ZZKZ and Rikkunshito significantly improve gastrointestinal symptoms. Their effect

Tongue brushing and mouth rinsing as basic treatment measures for halitosis.

Tongue brushing and mouth rinsing are basic treatment measures for halitosis, and as such are categorised as treatment needs (TN)-1. Although TN-1 is used for treatment of physiologic halitosis treatment, pseudo-, extra oral pathologic or halitophobic patients must also be managed with TN-1 as well as other treatments. Since the origin of physiological halitosis is mainly the dorso-posterior region of the tongue, tongue cleaning is more effective than mouth rinsing. However, practitioners should always instruct their patients on how to brush their tongues to prevent harmful effects. Another ap
