Facilitating Autism Service Navigation, Parenting, and Self-Care Within a Community-Based Organization: A Pilot Feasibility Study With Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Families.

Health care and early education systems are common entry points for autism identification and specialized services. However, culturally and linguistically diverse families are less likely to experience timely or positive interactions within these systems. This pilot feasibility study examined implementation outcomes of using non-specialist providers (NSPs) within a community-based non-profit organization to support early service navigation while also promoting caregiver use of evidence-based parenting and self-care strategies. Six multilingual NSPs completed a web-based training and delivered

Examination of social determinants of health among patients with limited English proficiency.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to examine the prevalence of social needs by English proficiency using data from Northwell Health's social determinants of health screening program. The screening program evaluates 12 domains of social needs: material need, employment, medical-legal assistance, health insurance, public benefits, health literacy, transportation, medical care, utilities, housing quality, food security, and housing insecurity. We have identified patients to have limited English proficiency if they have selected a language other than English as their primary language. RESU

Early intervention for speech impairment in children with cleft palate.

OBJECTIVE: This study explored the effectiveness of a parent-implemented, focused stimulation program on the speech characteristics of children younger than 3 years with cleft lip and palate. The research questions included the following: (1) Can parents be trained to deliver an early intervention (EI) program for children with cleft palate? (2) Does a parent-implemented EI program result in positive changes in speech characteristics? PARTICIPANTS: Ten mother-child pairs in which the child had cleft lip and palate (CLP) and 10 mother-child pairs in which the child did not have a cleft (NCLP).

Developing new scales for assessing parents' aural and oral rehabilitation skills to interact with children with hearing loss.

OBJECTIVE: Scales for evaluating the teaching and behavioural skills of parents enrolled in aural and oral rehabilitation programs for children with hearing loss are lacking. This study developed and validated scales for assessing parental teaching and behavioural skills of those parents for use in guiding their child to develop language and communication skills. DESIGN: Scales were constructed and evaluated using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. The performance of parents in teaching and behavioural skills was also explored. STUDY SAMPLE: The teaching and behavioural skills of

Further evaluation of emerging speech in children with developmental disabilities: training verbal behavior.

The conceptual basis for many effective language-training programs are based on Skinner's (1957) analysis of verbal behavior. Skinner described several elementary verbal operants including mands, tacts, intraverbals, and echoics. According to Skinner, responses that are the same topography may actually be functionally independent. Previous research has supported Skinner's assertion of functional independence (e.g., Hall & Sundberg, 1987; Lamarre & Holland, 1985), and some research has suggested that specific programming must be incorporated to achieve generalization across verbal operants (e.g

Using sign language with tracheotomized infants and children.

Children's ability to communicate with others is important for cognitive development. However, the number of infants and young children deprived of vocalization (aphonia) is increasing in the pediatric patient population due to tracheotomy. The Communication Program for Infants and Parents (CPIP) uses sign language as an alternative system to verbal communication.

Exercise and volunteer work: contexts for AD language and memory interventions.

This article describes two novel contexts for language and memory stimulation in individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD): student-supervised physical exercise and partnered volunteering at community agencies. Information presented is based on 5 years of the authors' experiences at the University of Arizona supervising student-administered interventions with mildly to moderately affected home-dwelling AD patients in the Volunteers in Partnership and Elder Rehab programs. The authors report significant mood and fitness improvements by program participants, as measured on direct testing as well

Communication issues in co-occurring ADHD and autism spectrum disorders. Evaluative approaches and targeted interventions: mini review.

PURPOSE: This mini-review presents strategies for assessing and treating communication difficulties in individuals with comorbid attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Standardized assessments such as the Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals and the Test of Language Development provide quantitative insights, while pragmatic tools, such as the Pragmatic Language Skills Inventory and the Social Communication Questionnaire provide qualitative measures of social communication skills. A comprehensive assessment also integrates clinical interviews

Anomia prehabilitation in temporal lobe epilepsy surgery: A pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: An emerging approach in surgery is to propose prehabilitation programs to strengthen the patient's functional abilities before surgical interventions, thus helping them cope better with its consequences. In drug-resistant language-dominant temporal lobe epilepsy (LdTLE), surgical treatment carries a risk of increasing cognitive deficits, notably word-finding difficulties (anomia) and verbal memory difficulties that negatively impact personal, social, and occupational activities. In this study, we invited 15 LdTLE patients to enroll in a speech and language prehabilitation program ad

Are emotions contagious? A conceptual review of studies in language education.

Considering the great role those affective variables play in language learning, it seems wise to hypothesize whether teacher and learner emotions are contagious in the language classroom or not. The existing literature on emotion contagion in other fields of study accepts this hypothesis and reveals significant points about the verbal and non-verbal cues for emotion contagion in class. The present paper introduces and defines the topic and goes on with summarizing the procedure of transmitting the emotion. Then, it reviews the existing research on emotion contagion in different areas and creat

Apraxia of speech and language delay: the complexity of diagnosis and treatment of symptomatic children.

Apraxia of speech is defined as the inability to sequence the movements required for accurate articulatory production, traditionally involving a deficit in speech motor programming. Language clinicians often confront about speech inconsistency clinical cases, which raise questions concerning the differential diagnosis between apraxia and language disorders. Such problem often results in the difficulty to establish an adequate treatment decision. In this work, we discuss a clinical report in which both diagnosis and treatment raise questions about the apraxic speech condition in childhood. We s
