Quantitative changes in mRNA expression of glutamate receptors in the rat peripheral and central vestibular systems following hypergravity.

In order to investigate the mechanisms responsible for adaptation to altered gravity, we assessed the changes in mRNA expression of glutamate receptors in vestibular ganglion cells, medial vestibular nucleus, spinal vestibular nucleus/lateral vestibular nucleus, cerebellar flocculus, and uvula/nodulus from rats exposed to hypergravity for 2 h to 1 week using real-time quantitative RT-PCR methods. The mRNA expression of GluR2 and NR1 receptors in the uvula/nodulus and NR1 receptors in the medial vestibular nucleus increased in animals exposed to 2 h of hypergravity, and it decreased gradually t

Uvular necrosis after upper endoscopy: a case report and review of the literature.

Uvular necrosis after endotracheal intubation or upper endoscopy is rare. We report here on a case of uvular necrosis and ulceration after endoscopy. The combination of ulceration and necrosis suggests uvular ischemia during endoscopy. The uvula may have been sandwiched between the shaft of the endoscope and the gum or hard palate, or may have been pressed against the posterior pharynx, leading to prolonged ischemia and resultant ulceration and necrosis. Uvular trauma can also be caused by oral pharyngeal suction. We recommend that post-endoscopy uvular necrosis should be managed conservativel

Characteristics of nystagmus evoked by electrical stimulation of the uvular/nodular lobules of the cerebellum in monkey.

Electrical stimulation in the monkey vestibulocerebellum has previously been shown to produce ocular nystagmus, but large stimulating current values were used. Using long duration (< or = 10-second) stimulus pulse trains and low current values (< 50 microA), we studied the nystagmus evoked by microstimulation in the uvular/nodular regions of the cerebellum. In doing this, we found quantitative differences in the nystagmus evoked from these two regions. Stimulation of the nodulus typically produced a vigorous nystagmus with a contralateral slow phase and a prolonged afternystagmus in the same d

A Comparative Study to Evaluate the Functional Effect of Unilateral Uvuloplasty after Primary Palatoplasty.

BACKGROUND: The conventional method for uvular repair suturing the 2 hemi-uvulas of the palatal cleft together in the midline does not allow us to obtain a proper anatomical repair. In our hands, the midline straight closure frequently causes retraction of the uvular tissues with the consequent abnormal appearance of the uvula. We described before a method for uvular repair in patients with cleft palate. The technique consists in preserving one of the hemi-uvulas, which is moved to the midline to form the definitive uvula. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the functional effects of the

[Histopathologic changes of the soft palate in snoring and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome patients].

Histology of the soft palate and uvula in snorers and patients with OSA syndrome has been a subject of investigation of many authors. In majority of specimens the hypertrophy of the salivary glands as well as congestion and dilation of the thin-walled vessels were observed. Some of the samples presented atrophy of the muscle bundles. Also, the inflammatory changes as lymphocytic infiltrations were proven. In each case adults served as a control group. In this study the histologic analysis of the soft palate and uvula samples from patients suffering from snoring and OSA syndrome was performed.

Observations on the projection from the perihypoglossal nuclei onto the cerebellum in the macaque monkey.

The occurrence and distribution of retrogradely labeled cells in the perihypoglossal nuclei of the monkey were mapped after injections of horseradish peroxidase in various cerebellar cortical regions. In general the findings are in accord with those made in the cat. The flocculus receives a heavy bilateral projection from the nucleus prepositus, particularly from its caudoventral part, and from the nucleus of Roller. There is an apparently scanty projection from the nucleus intercalatus. The uvula receives a rather similar projection, but in the prepositus the cells projecting to the uvula are

Cerebellar climbing fibers modulate simple spikes in Purkinje cells.

Purkinje cells have two action potentials: Climbing fiber responses (CFRs) and simple spikes (SSs). CFRs reflect the discharge of a single climbing fiber at multiple synaptic sites on the proximal dendrite of the Purkinje cell. SSs reflect the summed action of a subset of parallel fiber synapses on Purkinje cell dendritic spines. Because mossy fiber afferents terminate on granule cells, the ascending axons of which bifurcate, giving rise to parallel fibers, the modulation of SSs has been attributed to mossy fiber afferent signals. This inference has never been tested. Conversely, the low disch

Evidence for an intracerebellar acetylcholinesterase-rich but probably non-cholinergic flocculo-nodular projection in the rat.

A combination of a retrograde fluorescent dye tracing technique and staining for acetylcholinesterase (AChE) after di-isopropyl-phosphorofluoridate (DFP) pretreatment was used to identify cells which project to the nodulus, flocculus or cerebellar hemisphere. Spindle-shaped AChE-rich cells in the floccular stalk project to the flocculus, nodulus and uvula, but not to the cerebellar hemispheres. Bilateral removal of the flocculi and paraflocculi, however, decreased significantly only AChE, and not choline acetyltransferase, in nodulus or uvula.

Congenital unilateral benign papillomatosis of the mouth.

A 29-year old man had an unusual unilateral lesion of the mucous membranes of the mouth, including the lips, buccal mucosa, hard and soft palate, and uvula. The lesion was a conglomerate of tiny papillomas and had been present since birth. At the age of 8 years, a mass extending from the uvula into the pharynx was surgically excised. The histopathological findings showed acanthosis, papillomatosis, and an inflammatory infiltrate. The findings represent a rare case and perhaps a unique one, to my knowledge.

Cerebellar control of the cardiovascular responses during postural changes in conscious rabbits.

In conscious control rabbits, tilting the head 30 degrees up from a position 30 degrees down induced initially an inhibition in the renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA), however this inhibition immediately released and became a transient increase. Following these responses in RSNA, blood pressure (BP) initially decreased but recovered to the control level within 3-5 s. After bilateral destruction of the lateral nodulus-uvula in the cerebellum, in contrast, the same tilting of the head caused an immediate large increase in RSNA without early inhibition, which was sustained at a high level. [Uvular edema. Rare complication in anesthesia].

A uvular edema can be associated with angioedema, urticaria and anaphylaxis. Furthermore, it can be caused by medications, such as angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and angiotensin II receptor antagonists. Other reasons can be cannabis or cocaine use or a traumatic irritation of the uvula. This article presents the case of a patient who underwent kidney transplantation and developed extensive edema of the uvula that occurred postoperatively after general anaesthesia. The case report describes the diagnosis and therapy of this rare disease.

Anatomical Location of the Vestibulocerebellar Tract in the Healthy Human Brain: A Diffusion Tensor Imaging Study.

The vestibulocerebellar tract (VCT) is regarded as an important pathway of the central vestibular system. We identified the anatomical characteristics of the primary and secondary VCTs in a normal human brain using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) tractography. Thirty-one healthy adults were recruited. A 1.5 T scanner was used for DTI tractography. A seed region of interest (ROI) was placed on the superior and medial vestibular nuclei at the pons level and a target ROI was placed on the uvula-nodulus of the cerebellum for reconstructing the primary VCT. In the secondary VCTs, the seed ROI was pl

Obstructive sleep apnea and rhonchopathy are associated with downregulation of trefoil factor family peptide 3 (TFF3)-Implications of changes in oral mucus composition.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Trefoil factor family (TFF) peptides belong to the family of mucin-associated peptides and are expressed in most mucosal surfaces. TFF peptides carry out functions such as proliferation and migration enhancement, anti-apoptosis, and wound healing. Moreover, TFFs are associated with mucins and interact with them as "linker peptides", thereby influencing mucus viscosity. To test the hypothesis that in rhonchopathy and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) changes occur in the expression of TFF3 and -2 that could contribute to changes in mucus viscosity, leading to an increase in upper

Snoring and oral submucous fibrosis.

Forty patients above the age of 40 years with oral submucous fibrosis were studied to determine the frequency and severity of snoring. The results were compared with a controlled group of similar sex and age for presence of snoring. The present study indicates that patients with oral submucous fibrosis having a short and fixed uvula and scarred soft palate are less likely to develop snoring. Thus it is suggested that in laser surgery or in classical uvulopalatopharyngeal surgery, the uvula and soft palate should be reduced in size and volume to the extent of that found in oral submucous fibros

An Uncommon Complication with a Supraglottic Airway: The King LT.

General anesthesia was administered in an 18-year-old man for removal of hardware from his right knee using a King Laryngeal Tube supraglottic airway. An hour after extubation, he reported inability to swallow with no respiratory distress. Examination showed an edematous uvula, which took 3 days to subside with anti-inflammatory medication. During the positioning of the King Laryngeal Tube, it was pulled back to ensure adequate ventilation. The inflated cuff could have dragged the uvula and folded it on itself, leading to venous congestion and edema.

Effect of vestibulo-cerebellar lesions on asymmetry of vertical optokinetic functions in the squirrel monkey.

The role of the cerebellar uvula and nodulus in vertical optokinetic after-nystagmus (OKAN) was studied in 4 squirrel monkeys. Aspiration ablation of the uvula and nodulus resulted in no significant change in the initial or peak gain of vertical optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) during the 24-week post-operative observation. However, the asymmetry of vertical OKAN was significantly altered. Using a protracted upward OK stimulus, slow phase-down OKAN-II, which was not seen pre-operatively, was significantly increased. In contrast, a downward OK stimulus produced little change in slow phase-up OKAN-II

Prenatal assessment of the normal fetal soft palate by three-dimensional ultrasound examination: is there an objective technique?

OBJECTIVES: To describe a three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound technique for assessing the fetal soft palate. METHODS: A prospective study conducted from April to December 2006 included 87 fetuses in a low-risk population. Fetal ultrasound scans were performed between 21 and 25 weeks of gestation to determine the normal 3D ultrasound view of the fetal soft tissues of the palate. The sonographers used a 30 degrees-inclined axial 3D view of the fetal palate. Ultrasound images obtained in this view were compared with fetopathological specimens of the same gestational age by two observers, both pedi

Sensorimotor Transformations for Postural Control in the Vermis of the Cerebellum.

The cerebellar vermis plays an essential role in maintaining posture and balance by integrating sensory inputs from multiple modalities to effectively coordinate movement. By transforming convergent sensory information into precise motor commands, it ensures smooth, adaptive motor control, enabling the body to maintain stability in dynamic environments. This review examines recent findings that investigate the distinct neural computations performed by the anterior vermis and posterior vermis (nodulus/uvula). Specifically, we examine how Purkinje cells in these regions integrate vestibular and
