Interatrial septal thickness as a marker of structural and functional remodeling of the left atrium in patients with atrial fibrillation.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: There have been reports that interatrial septal (IAS) thickness is increased in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). This study was performed to investigate whether IAS thickness determined by transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) represents the amount of left atrium (LA) structural and functional remodeling. METHODS: The study population consisted of 104 consecutive patients who underwent catheter ablation (CA) for AF (paroxysmal atrial fibrillation [PAF], 82; persistent atrial fibrillation [PeAF], 22). IAS thickness and left atrium volume (LAV) using TTE, and LA voltage (

Aortic annulus and root characteristics in severe aortic stenosis due to bicuspid aortic valve and tricuspid aortic valves: implications for transcatheter aortic valve therapies.

BACKGROUND: Patients with severe aortic stenosis due to BAV are excluded from transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) due to concern for asymmetric expansion and valve dysfunction. We sought to characterize the aortic root and annulus in bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) and tricuspid aortic valves (TAV). METHODS AND RESULTS: We identified patients with severe AS who underwent multi-detector computed tomographic (MDCT) imaging prior to surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR, n = 200) for BAV and TAVR (n = 200) for TAV from 2010 to 2013. The presence of a BAV was confirmed on surgical and pat

Personality traits, cardiac risk factors, and their association with presence and severity of coronary artery plaque in people with no history of cardiovascular disease.

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a multifactorial complex disease. The aim of the present study is to verify whether the personality traits in CAD are associated with coronary artery plaque (CAP) presence and severity in people with no history of cardiovascular disease. DESIGN: A cross-sectional monocenter study. METHODS: Seventy five individuals with no history of CAD underwent 64-slice computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA) and were screened for traditional cardiac risk factors and for hostility, anger, and type D personality traits. RESULTS: In total, 48 patients (64

Impact of Calcified Raphe on TAVR in Bicuspid Patients: Predicting Redo-TAVR Feasibility and Virtual Planning Implications.

BACKGROUND: Patients with bicuspid aortic stenosis who receive transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) may require subsequent valve interventions in their lifetime; however, the feasibility of redo-TAVR in this population is uncertain. We aimed to assess redo-TAVR feasibility in bicuspid patients and develop a predictive virtual valve planning algorithm. METHODS: We studied computed tomography scans of bicuspid patients who received a balloon-expandable transcatheter heart valve (THV) in the LRT trial (Low Risk TAVR). Redo-TAVR feasibility, determined by valve-to-coronary and valve-to-a

Predictive score for identifying intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma patients without lymph node metastasis: a basis for omitting lymph node dissection.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to develop a predictive score for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) in patients without lymph node metastasis (LNM) using preoperative factors. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 113 ICC patients who underwent liver resection with systemic lymph node dissection between 2002 and 2021 was conducted. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was used as a predictive scoring system for node-negative patients based on the β coefficients of preoperatively available factors. RESULTS: LNM was observed in 36 patients (31.9%). Four factors were associated with LNM:

Epidemiology and reporting of osteoporotic vertebral fractures in patients with long-term hospital records based on routine clinical CT imaging.

UNLABELLED: Osteoporotic vertebral fractures signify an increased risk of future fractures and mortality and can manifest the diagnosis of osteoporosis. We investigated the prevalence of vertebral fractures in routine CT of patients with long-term hospital records. Three out of ten patients showed osteoporotic vertebral fractures (VFs) corresponding to the highest rates reported in European population-based studies. INTRODUCTION: VFs are a common manifestation of osteoporosis, which influences future fracture risk. Their epidemiology has been investigated in population-based studies. However,

Whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (WBMRI) versus whole-body computed tomography (WBCT) for myeloma imaging and staging.

Myeloma-associated bone disease (MBD) develops in about 80-90% of patients and severely affects their quality of life, as it accounts for the majority of mortality and morbidity. Imaging in multiple myeloma (MM) and MBD is of utmost importance in order to detect bone and bone marrow lesions as well as extraosseous soft-tissue masses and complications before the initiation of treatment. It is required for determination of the stage of disease and aids in the assessment of treatment response. Whole-body low-dose computed tomography (WBLDCT) is the key modality to establish the initial diagnosis

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement: Role of Multimodality Imaging in Common and Complex Clinical Scenarios.

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is an established therapy for patients with symptomatic severe aortic stenosis. Technological advances and the learning curve have resulted in better procedural results in terms of hemodynamic valve performance and intermediate-term clinical outcomes. The integration of anatomical and functional information provided by multimodality imaging has improved size selection of TAVR prostheses, permitted better patient selection, and provided new insights in the performance of the TAVR prostheses at follow-up. Furthermore, the field of TAVR continues to d

The detrimental impact of silent cerebral infarcts on asymptomatic carotid endarterectomy outcome.

BACKGROUND: Silent cerebral infarctions (SCIs) can be identified by preoperative computed tomography (CT) scans in patients with severe carotid stenosis being considered for carotid endarterectomy (CEA). It is unknown whether this finding has any effect on perioperative complications or long-term outcome. This study investigates the influence of SCI on early and late complications in asymptomatic patients undergoing CEA. METHODS: All consecutive CEAs undertaken for asymptomatic severe carotid stenosis from 2005 to 2013 were retrospectively evaluated for clinical and anatomic characteristics.

The aortic valve calcium nodule score (AVCNS) independently predicts paravalvular regurgitation after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).

BACKGROUND: Paravalvular regurgitation (PVR) is an important predictor of mortality after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Aortic valve (AV) calcification is strongly associated with PVR. OBJECTIVES: This study proposes a new metric to quantify AV total calcium burden and its composition in large calcium nodules (CNs) and explores its relation with PVR after TAVR. METHODS: In 133 patients that underwent TAVR, calcium burden of the AV was quantified with multidetector row CT as calcium mass. Each CN was characterized. The AV CN score (AVCNS) was defined as AV calcium mass × mass
